Measuring the Connectivity of Nodes in Road Networks (도로 네트워크의 노드 연계성 산정에 관한 연구)

  • This study proposes a model for measuring the connectivity of nodes in road networks. The connectivity index between two nodes is characterized by the number of routes, degree of circuitousness, design speed, and route capacity between the nodes. The connectivity index of a node is then defined as the weighted average of the connectivity indexes between the node and other nodes under consideration. The weighting factor between two nodes is determined by the travel demand and distance between them. The application of the model to a toy network shows that it reasonably well quantifies the level of connectivity of nodes in the network. If flow of rail networks can be measured in the same scale as that of road networks and the capacity of rail links can be estimated, the model proposed in this paper could be applied to intermodal transportation networks as well.

A Suggestion for Improved Road Signs Providing Efficient Road Information (효율적인 도로정보 제공을 위한 도로표지판 개선방안 제시)

  • PURPOSES : While road networks are becoming increasingly complex, traffic signs are being indiscriminately installed and operated, which makes drivers who depend on traffic signs to reach their destination confused and unable to understand road information efficiently. In order to promptly and exactly guide road users to their destinations, traffic signs should be able to satisfy the functions of connectivity, visibility, and location suitability. However, the results of a site survey shows that most of the traffic signs currently installed in the Jeollanam-do Province do not satisfy these functions. METHODS : This study analyzed the problems of traffic signs after an actual site survey and focused on a total on 9,353 traffic signs and 70 road routes in Jeollanam-do Province. RESULTS : This study analyzed the problems of traffic signs based on their required functions (connectivity, visibility, suitability) and suggested improvements by establishing a guide system that considered the problems found in the study. CONCLUSIONS : The guide system can be utilized as a basic material that provides efficient road information for future installation and maintenance of traffic signs in Jeollanam-do Province.

Enhancing Connectivity of Guiding Points at Road Signs (도로표지 안내지명의 연계성 확보 방안)

  • The road sign is one of street furnitures functioning to guide directions for drivers. The road sign should be employed and designed to help drivers find their destinations easily and accurately. It is obvious that the road sign is one of the main components that enhance efficiency and safety of driving environments. The current way of guiding strategy at road signs in Korea is a system for mainly guiding 'points' although a new system guiding 'road names' and 'street numbers' with the introduction of new address system is now being introduced on urban areas. When the regional territory management offices and local governments try to employ current road sign systems, they are supposed to follow the sign regulations which contains standard project processes, selection methods of guiding points, character size and design, and location selection for each road sign. However, the current road sign regulations are very complex to understand and unclear for a person in charge to do tasks described above. Especially, selection process and criteria of guiding points are cumbersome and controversial. Furthermore, non sufficient ways of selecting guiding points considering road functions and geographic characteristics decrease the connectivity of guiding points. This study develops enhanced ways of increasing connectivity of successive guiding points through three case studies. Developed ways will help highway agencies and officials understand how to improve the connectivity of road signs.

Indexing Method for Constraint Moving Objects Using Road Connectivity (도로의 연결성을 이용한 제약적 이동 객체에 대한 색인 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose an indexing method for efficiently updating current positions of moving objects on road networks. The existing road network models increase update costs when objects move to adjacent road segments because their connectivity is not preserved. We propose an intersection based network model and a new index structure to solve this problem. The proposed intersection based network model preserves network connectivity through splitting road networks to contain intersection nodes always. The proposed index structure In our experiments, we show that our method is about 3 times faster than an existing index structure in terms of update costs.

Automated Creation of Road Network from Road Edges

  • In this paper, a framework for creating road network from road edges is proposed. The present framework mainly includes two modules: road modeler and network generator. Road modeler creates the road polygons from the original road edges, and network generator performs converting road polygons to road network with good connectivity at all intersections. A prototype system is also built, and some experimental results are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

  • The present study attempts to provide the practical methodology to determine the spatial boundary of trade area, not depending on conventional circle-based regional analysis, but adopting dimension-diverging conception based on GIS and road connectivity by exemplifying a large-scale discount store with an outlook to enhance accuracy and reliability in trade area analyzing. Unlike the preliminary researches frequently relying on circular form of interpretation which were not likely to exclude obstacles blocking the accessibility to trade areas, the method suggested by the study is to suggest an alternative way for demarcating the trade areas more practically with better access by excluding in-between obstacles. Finally, we show verification of proposed cost models and performance by join strategy.

A Methodology for Assessing the Network Connectivity Improvement for Transport Hubs (교통물류거점의 네트워크 연계성 개선효과 분석 방법론)

  • This study proposes a methodology for assessing the improvement of network connectivity of transport hubs. Extending a previously developed model that measures the connectivity of a node in transportation networks, we define two quantities called the supplied connectivity and the experienced connectivity. Using these quantities, we provide a systematic procedure for analyzing the network connectivity of a transport hub and also suggest criteria for determining whether a given project is effective in improving the network connectivity of the transport hub. The application of the methodology to a test site produces reasonable results, and as such it is expected that the methodology can be used for various transport hubs in the national road network. Once enough data from the application of the methodology are accumulated, a further study on the level of service in terms of network connectivity needs to be followed.

Determination of Emergency Evacuation Roads Considering Road Network Function and Connectivity (도로네트워크 기능 및 연결성을 고려한 긴급대피교통로 선정)

  • This study is a fundamental research to determine the emergency evacuation roads considering road network function and connectivity. First of all, the functional aspects of the road networks are analyzed in the target area, Sejong city, by using degree centrality(DC) and closeness centrality(CC) from GIS based database. Secondly, how network connectivity makes a change in user's travel pattern and travel time and how it affects the whole network are analyzed using TransCAD simulation program. Finally, after performing cluster analysis of index, first and second emergency evacuation roads are determined by judging the characteristics of clusters. The results of this research will be helpful for making a decision to diminish secondary damages when confronting unexpected disasters.

Infrastructure and Leading Commodity Identification on Poverty Alleviation in Buru Regency, Indonesia

  • The poverty level in Buru Regency is still high, despite the relatively stable economic growth. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to (1) Identify the leading commodity in each district in Buru Regency; (2) Analyze the effect of road infrastructure and leading commodities on poverty. The findings show that the most sparsely populated district is Fena Leisela, with mangoes as the leading commodity. Pineapple, langsat, apple rose, cabbages, cashews, coffee, cashew, melon, and watermelon are the leading products in Air Buaya, Batabual, Waplau, Lolong Guba, Lilialy, Waelata, Namlea, Kaiely Bay, and Waeapo, respectively. Additionally, the results also indicate that road infrastructure and leading commodities have a significant effect on poverty alleviation in Buru Regency. It means that improving infrastructure and increasing leading commodities production reduce poverty in the region. Good road infrastructure can promote connectivity between regions so that it can accelerate and expand economic development. The provision of infrastructure that encourages connectivity will reduce transportation costs and logistics costs to increase product competitiveness and accelerate the economic movement. When the road infrastructure in Buru Regency improves and new roads are built, it can improve transportation access, it will reduce the living cost for the poor and increase income, and open up opportunities for the poor to benefit from economic growth.

Improvement Plan through Investigation and Analysis of Road Signs of National Highway (일반국도 도로표지 조사 및 분석을 통한 개선방안 도출)

  • A variety of complaints about road signs have occurred for various reasons, such as new road facilities, new road signs such as road name signs, and an increase in nearby important facilities. In addition, there are many road signs that are in violation of road sign regulations. The basic principles of road signs, the connectivity of guide names, the location suitability, and a consistent road sign guidance system have not implemented. To solve these problems, various errors were investigated on major road signs on eight national highways, including direction signs, distance signs, boundary signs, and route signs. In addition, we classified the errors on road signs by grade to give them maintenance priority. We also analyzed the error status of signs for each route and grade. Based on the data, the problems of the road signs were derived, and an improvement plan is discussed. Based on this research, more systematic installation and management of road signs through cooperation between the government and local governments could increase the efficiency of road signs, as well as provide safer and more convenient road sign guidance systems for road users.
