Bridge deck has a role in a comfortable and safe passage of vehicles. At the same time, it preserves upper structure against the abrasion and shearing due to impact of traffic loads in bridges or has a role to protect the plate from off adverse effect of climatic process as rain, chemicals. Currently, the total number of inspected bridges is 6,248 in the general national road and to maintain effectively, Introduction of GPR system mounted in the vehicle has been considered. In this research, the comparison and analysis of bridge deck condition on general national road has been performed with major variations of superstructure type, span lengths, located region and ages by using 'the current status of road bridge and tunnel' that is provided by MLTM(Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs). As a result, Condition assessment grade, superstructure type, age and length were derived as a major factor to determine priority for the condition assessment.
PURPOSES : The rumble strip installed at the highway near the tollgate has the purpose to reduce the vehicle velocity or prevent sleepiness by awakening people to the danger. These rumble strip has different vibration decibel from the rumble strip shapes, resulting in some fatigue damage to human because a driver suffers from a lot of stress and displeasure. In this connection, the objective of this paper is to analyze the vibration decibel perceived by a driver in the vehicle under some conditions. METHODS : The vibration decibel conveyed from the tire can be analyzed. The frequency analysis methods were used according to DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) analysis, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis, CPB (Constant Percentage Bandwidth) analysis. But the frequency analysis method in this paper is the 1/24 OCT(Octave) band analysis because of the convenience of the analysis and the overall vibration amplitude along the frequency. RESULTS : By using the results of the vibration decibel after analyzing the 1/24 OCT band analysis, these results can be compared from some conditions (e.g., rumble strip shape, uniform velocity of a vehicle, road condition, mass of a vehicle). As a result, the numerical values of decibel are not directly proportional to the vehicle velocity. CONCLUSIONS : At the condition that a vehicle is passing by the rumble strip, the value of a vibration decibel at the rumble strip of the cylinder shape is smaller than the rumble strip of rectangular shape regardless of the rumble strip depth and width. At the mass condition, the more a vehicle is massive, the more the vibration decibel increases. At the road condition, the vibration decibel at the wet road is smaller than the value at dry road condition.
This study is to investigate the effects of driving anger and traffic congestion on drivers' behaviors. Driving anger is the propensity to become angry while driving, and people differ in the tendency to get angry when encountering frustration and provocation on the road. Individual differences of the propensity contribute to anger on the road and aggressive driving leading traffic vaiolations and accidents. In the experiment three traffic conditions (an open road condition, a bumper-to-bumper traffic condition and a being stuck behind a slower driver condition) were simulated and driving behaviors were collected with RTSA-DS(Road Traffic Safety Authority-Driving Simulator). The results were as follows: Most of high anger drives drove at higher speeds in an open road condition, and in the bumper-to-bumper condition they drove faster and had an higher crash rate, which suggests they did aggressive driving, and risky and unsafe behaviors.
PURPOSES : Road sectors contribute approximately 16 % of total GHG emission rates in South Korea. Engineers and experts expend significant efforts to identify countermeasures for the reduction of carbon emission. This study aims to determine how total carbon emission rates change depending on whether or not there is speed limit enforcement. METHODS : In this study, Lamm's travel speed profile theory is first adopted to select the hazard road, which sections are designated as speed limit enforcement. Second, Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) was used to simulate the carbon emission on the road. RESULTS : The total carbon emission rate under speed limit enforcement was 10,773 g higher than the condition without speed limit enforcement in the designated road. This might affect acceleration, which can lead to increased emissions. CONCLUSIONS : There would be no researches about proving the relationship how speed limit enforcement has an effect on carbon emission. The result of our study can provide valuable guidelines regarding road safety and eco-friendly roads.

Black ice is very difficult to recognize and reduces the friction of the road surface, causing automobile accidents. Since black ice is difficult to detect, there is a need for a system that identifies black ice in real time and warns the driver. Various studies have been conducted to prevent black ice on road surfaces, but there is a lack of research on systems that identify black ice in real time and warn drivers. In this paper, an real-time image-based analysis system was developed to identify the condition of asphalt road surface, which is widely used in Korea. For this purpose, a dataset was built for each asphalt road surface image, and then the road surface condition was identified as dry, wet, black ice, and snow using deep learning. In addition, temperature and humidity data measured on the actual road surface were used to finalize the road surface condition. When the road surface was determined to be black ice, the salt spray equipment installed on the road was automatically activated. The surface condition recognition system for the asphalt concrete pavement and black ice automatic prevention system developed in this study are expected to ensure safe driving and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridge-type concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads. METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results. RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual-wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.
The reliable data relating to the condition of road surface is of increasing importance to deliver the road condition to driver and road management authority. This paper describes the development of a new high-speed. automatic, road data collection system, which collects the longitudinal road data with ${\sim}30cm$ interval covering full width of the road at 100km/h speed. The system calculates the international roughness index (IRI) from the collected data and displays the IRI and road profile data on the screen. To develope the system, we implement an optical range finder, advanced distance and motion detectors, and signal processing and display modules. The measurement accuracy of the system at 70km/h operation speed shows ${\pm}0.1m/km$ in the IRI for the standard road. To confirm the performance of the developed system, we also measure the IRI of a deployed highway road and compare the results with a conventional system and human eye measurement results.
A new method is developed to estimate road profile in order to estimate IRI based on the ASTM standard. This method utilizes an accelerometer and a Dynamic Tire Pressure Sensor (DTPS) to estimate road roughness. The accelerometer measures the vertical axle acceleration. The DTPS, which is mounted on the tire's valve stem, measures dynamic pressure inside the tire while driving. Calibrated transfer functions are used to estimate road profile using the signals from the two sensors. A field test was conducted on roads with different quality conditions in the city of Brockton, MA. The IRI values estimated with this new method match the actual road conditions measured with Pavement Condition Index (PCI) based on the ASTM standard, images taken from an onboard camera and passengers' perceptions. IRI has negative correlation with PCI in general since they have overlapping features. Compared to the current method of IRI measurement, the advantage of this method is that a) the cost is reduced; b) more space is saved; c) more time is saved; and d) mounting the two sensors are universally compatible to most cars and vans. Therefore, this method has the potential to provide continuous and global monitoring the health of roadways.
PURPOSES : Pavement Management System contains the data that describe the condition of the road. Under limited budget, the data can be utilized for efficient plans. The objective of this research is to develop a mixed integer program model that maximizes remaining durable years (or Lane-Kilometer-Years) in road maintenance planning. METHODS : An optimization model based on a mixed integer program is developed. The model selects a cluster of sectors that are adjacent to each other according to the road condition. The model also considers constraints required by the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation. They select two lanes at most not to block the traffic and limit the number of sectors for one-time construction to finish the work in given time. We incorporate variable cost constraints. As the model selects more sectors, the unit cost of the construction becomes smaller. The optimal choice of the number of sectors is implemented using piecewise linear constraints. RESULTS : Data (SPI) collected from Pavement Management System managed by Seoul Metropolitan City are fed into the model. Based on the data and the model, the optimal maintenance plans are established. Some of the optimal plans cannot be generated directly in existing heuristic approach or by human intuition. CONCLUSIONS:The mathematical model using actual data generates the optimal maintenance plans.
An Empirical approach to determine a road-surface condition is presented The road-surface condition thus provided includes the detection of not only friction coefficient, but also abrupt surface-profile changes such as pitfalls and bumpers The former plays a key role in establishing the appropriate control strategy, while the latter allows to minimize unnecessary brake intervention induced by the aforementioned jut. In this paper, we use an empirically chosen variable, namely. the time-rate of change of vehicle speed estimated from the point where ABS engaged to the point where measurement taken Experimental results shoe that the proposed method is effective to infer various control variables critical for the control of ABS.
