  • The Alternative energy has lately attracted considerable attention due to the high oil price and environment problem. In this study, pilot test facility for using the geothermal energy source from riverbank filtration was constructed and monitoring devices are installed to estimate the efficiency of this system. Initial installation cost can be saved efficiently by connect ing a heat pump system into the exist ing pumping well in Changwon riverbank filtration site. One set of monitoring results during summer was presented and analyzed.

  • Experiments were performed to estimate the organic release from the aquifer soil in riverbank and/or riverbed filtration via a kinetic approach. Organic release was assumed as a reaction of first order regarding concentrations in both soil and water phases. The reaction rate constants were obtained by comparing the model predictions with the experimental data of organic release reaction and the equilibrium distribution of organic matter between water and soil phases. Results show that the organic release from the aquifer soil was not negligible under normal conditions in Korea reaching 4.7mg-COD/L-day. This indicates that manganese and iron start to be released from aquifer soil in the riverbank filtration in the middle reach of the Nakdong river if the travel time of the filtrate exceeds about 5 days. It was also seen that the COD of the soil organic matter was 0.89mg-COD/mg-OM and that 65% of the COD was BOD5.

  • This study investigates the design parameters for riverbed filtration (RBF) based on the geochemistry of river water and groundwater. The study area consists of alluvium, and the area is readily affected by non-point sources of chemical contaminants in the surface environment; this is expected to affect the design parameters for RBF. River and groundwater samples were collected at three points along the river flow and at nine points along a transect normal to the river, respectively. The geochemical data indicate that the sources of individual chemical contaminants are industrial facilities and agricultural activity near the study area. In addition, The samples are mainly Ca-Na-$HCO_3$, Ca-Cl, and Ca-$HCO_3$-Cl type waters. The design parameters of RBF in the study area should consider K, $HCO_3$, $NO_3$, and Cl. We divided the study area into three regions based on the concentrations of stable nitrogen isotopes: Region A, the origin of the river and denitrification; Region B, denitrification in the flow direction of tributaries; and Region C, the origin of natural soil, sewage, and anthropogenic pollution.

  • An experiment using a 5 m-long sand column was performed to evaluate the resisting capability against micro-pollutants of the infiltration gallery, multi-purpose filtration pond and riverbank/bed filtration, of which the filtration distance is becoming increasingly shorter in Korea. Results suggested that the Korean riverbed sand contained significant amount of organics, resulting in a relatively vigorous adsorption of chloride ion on the sand surface. Results also indicated that while phenol was not detected in the column filtrate, both 1,4-dioxane and diazinon were exposed to adsorption by the sand as they moved through the column, decreasing their peak concentrations during the movement. It can be expected that the peak concentrations will diminish significantly in the practical scale due to its longer travel distance.

  • Laboratory scale model was constructed for open-cut riverbed infiltration experiment and four kinds of media were selected, medium sand, sand, volcanic rock, and gravel, for the experiment. Hydraulic conductivity for each medium and flow rate from the collecting pipe with functional screen were estimated from the experiment. Modified hydraulic conductivity scenarios considering turbid water (30~50 NTU) were applied in Visual MODFLOW modeling to analyze the effects of turbid water on the flow rate. Twenty-two scenarios were generated considering prticles in turbid water and applied to each medium cases in MODFLOW modeling. The minimum error was occurred when the gravel medium had 20% less hydraulic conductivities for the third layer-depth from the top and clay particles in turbid water might play a role in adsorption process to the surface of volcanic rock (2~5 mm). For medium sand case the error was also quite small when the mediumhas 5% less hydraulic conductivities for the second layer-depth from the top.

  • Riverbank filtration is a kind of artificial aquifer recharge for the fresh water supply. By construction of several production wells penetrating the riverbank, surface water withdrawn from the river would pass riverbed. This extracted water is well known to be cooler than surface water in summer and warmer than surface water in winter, showing more constant water temperature. This characteristic of extracted water is applied to geothermal energy utilization. Prediction of the annual temperature variation of filtrated water is the major concern in this study. In Daesan-myeon, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, riverbank filtration facility has been on its operation for municipal water supply and thermal energy utilization since 2006. Appropriate hydraulic and thermal properties were estimated for flow and heat transfer modeling with given pumping rate and location. With the calibrated material properties and boundary conditions, we numerically reproduced measured head and temperature variation with acceptable error range. In the numerical simulation, the change of saturation ratio and river stage caused by rainfall was calculated and the resulting variation of thermal capacity and thermal conductivity was considered. Simulated temperature profiles can be used to assess the possible efficiency of geothermal energy utilization using riverbank filtration facility. Influence of pumping rate, pumping location on the extracted water temperature will be studied.

  • Groundwater flow due to intake of horizontal collector well in riverbank filtration site was analyzed by use of numerical groundwater modeling program (FEFLOW 5.1). Drawdowns of groundwater table nearby collector well were evaluated according to variations of several conditions; pumping rate, thickness of aquifer, offset distance from well to shore line of stream, conductance of streambed. It is observed that the drawdowns of groundwater table are clearly changed according to the variations of these conditions. The results of sensitive analysis shows that the thickness of alluvial aquifer and the offset distance are more sensitive than the conductance of streambed in evaluation of drawdown. This result implies that hydrogeological conditions, as like thickness of aquifer and its distribution in the site are important factors in site selection and evaluating the availability of riverbank filtration intake using horizontal collector well system. It is also revealed that numerical modeling using FEFLOW with 1-D discrete element feature can give efficient quantitative evaluation of horizontal collector well and estimation of availability of riverbank filtration site.

  • In order to prevent the decrease in well efficiencies due to friction in the axial flow in long, large-diameter laterals, a multi-diameter lateral was devised and tested through lab-scale sand-box experiments to assess its performance. In the experiment, three different production rates were applied over the multi-diameter and the three single-diameter laterals to obtain the hydraulic head distributions for each, which was used to assess the performance of the laterals. Results elucidated that the multi-diameter lateral reduced the material cost by more than a third, in comparison to the single-diameter lateral, while maintaining the production rate at higher than 93%, proving its superiority. Furthermore, results indicated that exit velocities exceeding 0.8 m/sec in horizontal wells tended to distort the hydraulic head distribution near the exit, providing evidence of its inefficiency.
