The purpose of this study is to examine the meander charactericstics for the rivers in Korea..In this study, the new characteristics factors of meander are proposed, and the relationships among the factors proposed in this study and the existing factors are derived. An attempt is made to find considerable relation among meander characteristics, but width and meander belt did not show any defined trend and considerable scatter of points was observed. Relationships among the meander length, belt and flowrate, etc., which are factors of meander characteristics, are analyzed the 67 rivers above 30km in length. Channel shape factor which is the ratio of the length from the starting point to the end to the channel lenght, tortuosity which is the ratio of the curved channel length against the channel length are suggested for a new characteristics factor of meander. They are well correlated with channel length, Horton's shape facotr and meander gradient, consequently have to be important measures of river meander. The result of the detailed comparison and the analysis of degree of sinuosity, velocity and water surface slop are brought light on the fact show that the curved reach is morestable than the straight one. The ratio of the meander length to the meander belt and its accumulative frequency showed excellent correlationship when plotted on the semi-log paper. The results of regression analysis of meander belt and meander length show linear for the South Han river branches and power curve for the Geum river and the Nakdong river branches.
In order to examine flow characteristics according to the shape of the meandering low flow channel in the compound cross section typed straight channel, we assumed the representative channel type in Korea and confirmed the validity of the 3D numerical simulation by carrying out the hydraulic model. Based on this study, numerical simulations were also conducted on other types of river channel. As a result of the numerical model test (using the velocity value measured by the water depth observation from the hydraulic model test), it was confirmed that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. As a result of analyzing the flow field according to the changes in the shape of the low flow channel, it was confirmed that the secondary flow examined in the previous studies occurred. Also, it was confirmed that the maximum flow velocity point moves according to the expansion cross sectional area of flow in high flow plain. Ultimately, it is thought that it is necessary to understand the position of the water impingement (which is an important factor in river design) and the extent of the impact because the change of the channel width affects the flow.
This study investigates channel stabilities with groynes by developing the assessment of it and applying a 2-dimensional numerical model, which simulates flow and sediment transport with various flows in the channel. Evaluation inventories are composed of five items, which are width to depth ratio, sinuosity, bed slopes, velocities in the flow flied, Shields number with discharges and geomorphic characteristics in the study reach. The channel stability is evaluated by applying the evaluation indicators to the channel with and without groynes in the study reach between Dalseong-weir and Gangjeonggoryeong-weir in the Nakdong river. Width to depth ratio, sinuosity, and bed slopes, which are index of river characteristics, little affect the channel stability. However, velocities in the flow flied, and Shields number, which is dimensionless tractive, near the banks of the channel strongly affect the stability. The evaluation values of the stability in the channel on the left and right banks decrease as the number of groynes increase in both the left and right banks, which means that the bank stability increases with the groynes.

If there is no choice but to be urbanized, we should examine how human interference has had influences on the area to keep the river environment safe and stable. This study is aimed at finding improvement by examining the effect of human interference in Gapcheon river in Daejeon, which is developing fast. Distinctive features of human interference in Gapcheon river are followings. First, middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon river are being maintained and restored focusing on flood control but are scheduled to develop city and channel. Second, the rear area of middle and lower reaches of Gapcheon river is already developed into an urban district and solidified into artificial stream for leisure activities installing the artificial structure for fun. Third, lower reaches of Gapcheon river are in an unstable condition because of straightening waterway and developing rear area of river. Up to now, geographical features and bio-diversity of Gapcheon river has been ruined by the artificial management of river centered for technical engineering. From now on, followings should be considered for management of urban river. First, it is focused on maintaining eco system by itself than usage for human. Second, natural features of rear area of river should be taken into consideration and should be preserved before developing urban city and hills, back marsh, channel deposit and swamp to directly have an influence on river.
This study analyzes the properties of fluvial landforms in the upper and lower reaches and investigates the evolutions of stream and fluvial terrace in the Odae river basin. The lower basin of the river that consist of sedimentary rocks resistant to weathering and erosion processes shows higher altitude, relief and slope than the upper basin that consist of granite less resistant to weathering and erosion processes. The average width of river valley at the lower reaches is one-third to the upper reaches and the average width of river channel at the lower reaches is narrower than at the upper reaches. Based on the OSL age dating, the fluvial terrace T1 formed at the temperature-rising period during the late MIS 2 and T2 formed at the middle MIS 3, interstadial period during the last glacial period. Based on the these results, the average incision rates of Odae river are calculated as 0.205m/ka and 0.269m/ka at the upper granite area and lower sedimentary rocks area, respectively.

The objective of this planning proposal is to rehabilitate the urban stream which has been ecologically disturbed in the urban process. The experimental stream, Su-am stream located in Anyang City is typical urban stream in adjacent land use and the spatial condition. The stream in the watershed context, is the second tributary of Han River, in the Anyangcheon watershed. The Characteristics of the stream reach were analyzed by the river corridor survey. In the conceptual phase, Rehabilitation Programs were established based on the hydrological, ecological and spatial characteristics of the stream. Spatial zoning concept according to the characteristics of the stream and adjacent land use, was suggested 4 types of zoning; ecological preservation zone, natural landscape zone, neighborhood water-friendly zone and CBD water-friendly zone. Implementation Practices can be summarized as follow: For The longitudinal river continuum, some In-stream practices were suggested and implemented; such as channel alignment, step & pool, pool & riffle and low-flow channel bank. For latitudinal continuum and intimate spatial relationship between Sam-duk Park & Su-am stream, gentle sloped bank was planned and implemented. After stream improvement & ecological Implementation, follow-up monitoring and adaptive management programs will be a meaningful process for ecological rehabilitation.

At the bends of a river, the deflected flow of high energy erodes the embankment and transports sediment, ultimately changing the river's course. Such phenomena lead to instability of the embankment and may cause serious problems for nearby roads, land, or riverside structures. This study intends to analyze the characteristics of hydraulic flow at S-shaped bends after the installation of Riprap Weirs designed to prevent changes in a river's course and embankment erosion. An experimental channel was constructed by a two-dimensional CCHE2D model, and analyzed the characteristics of hydraulic flow with and without the Riprap Weirs. Also, the characteristics of hydraulic flow at the inner and outer sides of river bends and at points near reservoirs were analyzed, depending on the intervals between the Riprap Weirs.
More recently, there have been significant changes in the forms of channels due to runoff characteristics driven by climate changes and other alterations in basin/channel environments. Particularly, increasing local deposition in major channels is being observed nationwide. Of such phenomena, it is noteworthy that flood-plains show unidirectional growth and lowering of channels within compound channels in the form of a high-flow plain. These changes are supposed to affect management of the river ecology as well as flood control. In this study, the research on channels in Korea confirmed that the phenomenon of local deposition in those channels is actually taking place, rendering a problem to be urgently addressed. Previous studies on bed changes have been focused on low channels based on bed materials distributed over the channels. However, this research has proved that surface-layer deposition of a high-flow plain is closely related with changes in the conditions of ground surfaces and, ultimately, affects the bed of the entire channel as well. According to the intensive research on the condition of the high-flow plain of the mouth of the Han River, the silt deposited in the high-flow plain was the main cause of settlement/growth of vegetation. And this leads to landforming along with woods-forming, disturbing flood control as well as the normal river ecology.

Salinity distribution in estuary and tidal river is presented by many parameters including tidal forcing, river discharge and geographical effect. Understanding the characteristics of salinity structure is very important in the aspect of water-quality, ecological, and engineering viewpoint. Field measurement was carried out to study the distribution of salinity structure at 2 surface stations at Yeomha channel in the Han River estuary. The results of short- and long-term salinity change according to short and long tidal variability is investigated. For analyzing the axial salinity distribution at Yeomha channel, the salinity data from NFRDI is used in this study. The relationship between freshwater discharge and salinity distribution is represented through the nonlinear regression equation. The empirical equation for salt intrusion length scale, including tide, river discharge, and topographical effect is presented. As the comparison of empirical equation and existing data collected in study area, the characteristic of salt intrusion length and salinity distribution is changed by tide, fresh water, and geographical effect.

Continuous and accurate instrument of river water usage is needed for sustainable river water management. Although the instrument methods applicable to each point of use of river water are different, more precise direct instrument methods are required at the point of major open channel. Users of river water should select appropriate direct instrument methods to measure usage, but there is a lack of standards and verification research. In this study, the H-Q rating curve method, ultrasonic method, and microwave method were applied directly to the test basin in the upper basin of Mangyeong river, and the accuracy of measurement data was evaluated by comparing absolute error between discharge data calculated by instrument method. When comparing the calculated discharge of point units, the ultrasonic method showed the best results of the actual measurement. Through continuous instrument, the sum of the daily and monthly units was compared, and the ultrasonic and microwave methods were shown to be highly accurate. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that the appropriate direct measurement method can be selected according to the importance of the river water use facility, considering that the ultrasonic method and the microwave method are relatively costly compared to the water level-flow relationship method.
