A Risk Quantification Study for Accident Causes on Building Construction Site by Applying Probabilistic Forecast Concept (확률론적 추정 개념을 적용한 건설 공사 현장의 사고원인별 리스크 정량화 연구)

  • Recently the construction project is becoming large-sized, complicated, and modernize. This has increased the uncertainty of construction risk. Therefore, studies should be followed regarding scientifically identifying the risk factors, quantifying the frequency and severity of risk factors in order to develop a model that can quantitatively evaluate and manage the risk for response the increased risk in construction. To address the problem, this study analyze the probability distribution of risk causes, the probability of occurrence and frequency of the specific risk level through Monte Carlo simulation method based on the accident data caused at construction sites. In the end, this study derives quantitative analysis by analyzing the amount of risk and probability distributions of accident causes. The results of this study will be a basis for future quantitative risk management models and risk management research.

The Novel Method of Segmental Bio-Impedance Measurement Based on Multi-Frequency for a Prediction of risk Factors Life-Style Disease of Obesity (비만관련 생활습관병 위험인자 예측을 위한 다중 주파수 기반의 분할 체임피던스 측정법)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a correlation between the segmental bio-impedance measurement with the frequency modulations and the life-style disease of obesity. An obesity is not simply the factor for estimating the life-style disease of obesity, but also the risk factor occurring. There are many methods (BMI, WHR, Waist, CT, DEXA, BIA, etc.) for measuring a degree of obesity; the bio-impedance measurement is more economic and more effective than others. The physical examination, the blood test, the medical imaging diagnosis and the bio-impedancemeasurementswithmultiple frequencies for each body parts have been conducted for 77 people. The estimated value has been calculated through a segmental bio-impedance model based on multi-frequency that was created to reflect the highest correlation by analyzing correlation with linear regression analysis method for the measured bio-impedance and the risk factors. Then we compared with the clinical diagnosis. In case of high level cholesterol, low HDL-C and high LDL-C for life-style disease, the sensitivity is 80~100%and the specificity is 83~100%. This study has shown conclusively that bio-impedance can be a possible predictor to analyze the disease risk rate of population and individual health maintenance. And also the multi-frequency segmental bio-impedance can be used as early predictor to estimate the life-style disease of obesity.

Evaluation on Four Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Contents in the Groundwater and Their Human Risk Level

  • In this study, we monitored 4 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chloroform, dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and tetrachloromethane in groundwater samples to determine the detection frequency and their concentrations and evaluated the health risk level considering ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. 75 groundwater wells were selected. 24 wells were from monitoring background groundwater quality level and 51 wells were from monitoring groundwater quality level in industrial or contamination source area. In the results, the detection frequency for chloroform, dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and tetrachloromethane was 42.3%, 8.1%, 6.0%, and 3.4%, respectively. The average concentrations of VOCs were high in the order of chloroform ($1.7{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), dichloromethane ($0.08{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), tetrachloromethane ($0.05{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), and 1,2-dichloroethane ($0.05{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$). Chloroform had the highest detection frequency and average detection concentration. In the contaminated groundwater, the detection frequency of VOCs was high in the order of chloroform, dichloromethane, 1,2-dchloroethane, and tetrachloromethane. The average concentrations for chloroform, dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and tetrachloromethane were $2.23{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, $0.08{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, $0.07{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and $0.06{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, respectively. All the 4 compounds were detected at industrial complex and storage tank area. The maximum concentration of chloroform, dichloromethane, and 1,2-dichloroethane was detected at industrial complex area. Especially, the maximum concentration of chloroform and dichloromethane was detected at a chemical factory area. In the uncontaminated groundwater, the detection frequency of VOCs was high in the order of chloroform, dichloromethane, and 1,2-dchloroethane and tetrachloromethane was not detected. The average concentrations for chloroform, dichloromethane, and 1,2-dichloroethane were $0.57{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, $0.07{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and $0.03{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, respectively. Although chloroform in the uncontaminated groundwater was detected the most, the concentration of chloroform was not exceeding water quality standards. By land use, the maximum detection frequency of 1,2-dichloroethane was found near a traffic area. For human risk assessment, the cancer risk for the 4 VOCs was $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-9}$, while the non-cancer risk (HQ value) for the 4 VOCs is $10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-3}$.

Food Intake and Breast Cncer Risk: A Case-Control Study (식품섭취에 따른 유방암의 발생 위험 : 환자- 대조군 연구)

  • We performed case-control study to evaluate relationship between food intake and risk of breast cancer. We interviewed breast cancer cases(n=108) who were newly histologically identified and selected from Hanyang and Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Seoul. We used hospital-based control subjects(n=121), who were selected from the patients in the department of plastic surgery, general surgery and opthalmology of the same hospital by frequency matching. Matching variables were age($\pm$4 age) and menopausal status. We collected information on general characteristics of subjects, history of disease, family history of breast cancer, vitamin supplementation, alcohol intake, and food intake through individual interview. Dietary information was ascertained via a food frequency questionnaire method(total item=98). All analyses was conducted according to menopausal status. Especially, pepper and grape intake in premenopausal women, showed protective effect in breast cancer. Otherwise consumption of meat, pork, and fish was not associated with breast cancer risk in this study. At milk and dairy products, milk intake was associated with lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women and overall intake of soy products was associated with breast cancer risk, but not significant. These findings suggested that consumption of some fruit and vegetable intake was a protective factor on breast cancer and further study with more number of subjects should be need to evaluate the breast cancer risk. Strategies for Risk Management of Agricultural Business in Agricultural Companies (농업경영체의 농업경영위험관리 전략에 관한 연구)

  • As agricultural companies encounter number of risks in their business, it is very important to control the risks for their stable management. So we examine the agricultural business risks and propose the risk management strategies for the agricultural companies. For these purpose, we analyze the agricultural business risks with which agricultural companies are confronted, and propose the agricultural companies' the risk management strategies. The results of this study are as follows : First, Changing the risk environment of agricultural business, we have to realize the importance of the agricultural risks and risk management in it. Second, When we choose the risk management strategies which are risk retention, risk avoidance, risk control, risk transfer and insurance, etc., we should always consider the frequency of loss and the severity of loss. Third, If we don't control the agricultural risks, we will be in a position to very difficult situation. So, Agricultural companies should lead to stronger effort to manage the risks for their stable business.

  • One fundamental element of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) is the initiating event (IE) analysis. Since IE frequencies can change over time, time-trend analysis is required to obtain optimized IE frequencies. Accordingly, such time-trend analyses have been employed to estimate industry-average IE frequencies for use in the PSAs of U.S. nuclear power plants (NPPs); existing PSAs of Korean NPPs, however, neglect such analysis in the estimation of IE frequencies. This article therefore provides the method for and results of estimating Korean industry-average IE frequencies using time-trend analysis. It also examines the effects of the IE frequencies obtained from this study on risk insights by applying them to recently updated internal events Level 1 PSA models (at-power and shutdown) for an OPR-1000 plant. As a result, at-power core damage frequency decreased while shutdown core damage frequency increased, with the related contributions from each IE category changing accordingly. These results imply that the incorporation of time-trend analysis leads to different IE frequencies and resulting risk insights. The IE frequency distributions presented in this study can be used in future PSA updates for Korean NPPs, and should be further updated themselves by adding more recent data.

Study on Altered Food Preference and Food Frequency in Stroke Patients (뇌졸중 환자의 식품 기호도 변화와 섭취빈도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary habits and altered food preferences of stroke patients. One hundred and forty-six outpatients, who had experienced their first-ever stroke and were admitted to Asan Medical Center between July and December 2000, were studied. Using interviews, we assessed the altered food preferences, food consumption frequency, and other factors influencing the food preferences and food consumption frequency of the subjects. These results were analyzed with 2 t-tests, and multiple regression analysis, using the SPSS package program. Preferences for pork, red fish, coffee, bread and stews were higher in male stroke patients than in females. The frequency of consumption of beef, pork, white fish, red fish, egg, garlic, onion, coffee, instant noodles, bread, and culinary vegetables increased in the male stroke patients more than in the females. Food preferences were influenced by income, risk factors, subjective tastes and location of brain ischemic lesions. Food consumption frequency was affected by food preference, income, drugs, alcohol, marital status, sex, and dysgeusia. As a result of multiple regression analysis, the frequency of consumption of white fish, red fish, eggs, soy milk, milk, garlic, onions, coffee, noodles, bread, bean-paste stew, kimchi, culinary vegetables, and greasy foods were the most affected by each food preference. Our results suggest that food consumption frequency may vary with food preference, income, drugs, alcohol, marital status, sex, and dysgeusia, and nutrition education should be formulated to prevent stroke recurrence based on the food preferences, subjective tastes, and risk factors of individual stroke patients.

Dieticians' intentions to recommend functional foods: The mediating role of consumption frequency of functional foods

  • This study explored the conceptual framework of dieticians' intentions to recommend functional food and the mediating role of consumption frequency. A web-based survey was designed using a self-administered questionnaire. A sample of Korean dieticians (N=233) responded to the questionnaire that included response efficacy, risk perception, consumption frequency, and recommendation intention for functional foods. A structural equation model was constructed to analyze the data. We found that response efficacy was positively related to frequency of consumption of functional foods and to recommendation intention. Consumption frequency also positively influenced recommendation intention. Risk perception had no direct influence on recommendation intention; however, the relationship was mediated completely by consumption frequency. Dieticians' consumption frequency and response efficacy were the crucial factors in recommending functional foods. Dieticians may perceive risks arising from the use of functional foods in general, but the perceived risks do not affect ratings describing dieticians' intentions to recommend them. The results also indicated that when dieticians more frequently consume functional foods, the expression of an intention to recommend functional foods may be controlled by the salience of past behaviors rather than by attitudes.

Application of Risk Based-Inspection for the Safety Improvement of the Chemical Facilities (화학설비의 안전성 향상을 위한 위험기반검사의 적용)

  • As a way of improving the safety of the facilities, the risk based-inspection (RBI) was executed for the chemical facilities by using K-RBI program, which has been developed based on the API-581 based resource document (BRD). As the result of the evaluation, we found the level of the process safety management (PSM) for the applied plant, quantitative risk of the applied process, risk of static facilities and pipes, and the damage mechanism of the facilities. Thus, we could suggest a proper inspection frequency using the calculated risk of the process and the status of the facilities. The applied plant achieved a reduced inspection cost by an extension of the inspection frequency, improved productivity, improved reliability of the facilities, and a computerized history management.
