  • Recent success of gravitational wave (GW) detection by LIGO opened a new window to expand our understanding of the Universe. In addition to LIGO, several other developments are going on or under planning. However, each of these detectors has a specific sensitive frequency range. There is a missing frequency band, 0.1-10 Hz, where detectors loose sensitivity significantly due to Newtonian noise on the Earth. We introduce a plan to develop a Superconducting Low-frequency Gravitational- wave Telescope (SLGT), which can observe massive black holes in 0.1-10 Hz. The SLGT system consists of magnetically levitated six test masses, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), rigid support frame, cooling system, vibration isolation, and signal acquisition. By taking the advantage of nearly quantum-limited low-noise SQUIDs and capacitor bridge transducers, SLGT's detection sensitivity can be improved to allow astrophysical observation of black holes in cosmological distances. We present preliminary design study and expected sensitivity, and its technical feasibility.

  • The present study investigated the effect of the correlation of the measured road roughness profiles corresponding to the left and right wheels of a vehicle on the vibration of a vehicle-bridge coupling system. Four sets of road roughness profiles were measured by a laser road-testing vehicle. A correlation analysis was carried out on the four roughness samples, and two samples with the strongest correlation and weakest correlation were selected for the power spectral density, autocorrelation and cross-correlation analyses. The scenario of a three-axle truck moving across a rigid-frame arch bridge was used as an example. The two selected road roughness profiles were used as inputs to the vehicle-bridge coupling system. Three different input modes were adopted in the numerical analysis: (1) using the measured road roughness profile of the left wheel for the input of both wheels in the numerical simulation; (2) using the measured road roughness profile of the right wheel for both wheels; and (3) using the measured road roughness profiles corresponding to left and right wheels for the input corresponding to the vehicle's left and right wheels, respectively. The influence of the three input modes on the vibration of the vehicle-bridge system was analyzed and compared in detail. The results show that the correlation of the road roughness profiles corresponding to left and right wheels and the selected roughness input mode both have a significant influence on the vibration of the vehicle-bridge coupling system.

  • Many authors have established the usefulness of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) sections as compression members while few have proved their utility as flexural members. To explore their prospective as part of CFST frame structures, two types of connections using extended end plate and seat angle are proposed for exterior joints of CFST beams and CFST columns. To investigate the performance and failure modes of the proposed bolted connections subjected to static loads, an experimental program has been executed involving ten specimens of exterior beam-to-column joints subjected to monotonically increasing load applied at the tip of beam, the performance is appraised in terms of load deformation behaviour of joints. The test parameters varied are the beam section type, type and diameter of bolts. To validate the experimental behaviour of the proposed connections in CFST beam-column joints, finite element analysis for the applied load has been performed using software ATENA-3D and the results of the proposed models are compared with experimental results. The experimental results obtained agree that the proposed CFST beam-column connections perform in a semi-rigid and partial strength mode as per specification of EC3.

  • Vancomycin belongs to the vancomycin-risocetin family of glycopeptides, and is a subclass of linear sugar containg peptides composed of seven amino acids. Its strochemical configuration forms the basic of a peptidoglycon monomer. The glycosylated hexapeptide chainconsists of chloro-$\beta$-hydroxytyrosines, p-hytidoglycines, N-anthylleucine and aspartic acid forms a rigid molecular frame work and gives the difficulty in the analysis. Voncomycin in the serum samples is usually estimated by liquid chromatography and the bacterial sensitivity was genereally tested by the microbiological assay. The pressent review deals with the qualitative, quantutative, microbioligical and immunological assays and the comparison of the quantitative methods. Clinical implications of vancomycin have also been cited in the review.

  • In this paper, structural characteristics for an extradosed prestressed concrete box girder bridge are investigated in terms of selective parameters. These parameters are mainly associated with the structural details of the extradosed bridge and derived from currently available literatures regarding previous design drawings. The analyses have been carried out using general-purpose structural analysis program, RM-Space Frame. The parameters evaluated for the present study represent the most salient features of the extradosed bridge and are as follows; 1) span length ratio(side-span length to center-span length), 2) boundary condition of girder, 3) height of pylon, 4) anchorage location of external cables and 5) girder stiffness. The analytical predictions indicate that span length ratio and pylon height are reasonably adequate in the range of 0.55 to 0.60 and $L_m/8$ to $L_m/12$ respectively for the bridge under consideration. Also, demonstrated is the boundary condition of girder, in which rigid-connection details give more efficiency than the continuous details. In addition, considering structural characteristics of the extradosed bridge, it is desirable that the girder stiffness should be determined by the stress range of external cables rather than bending moment of girder.

  • A new type of moment-resisting bolted connection was developed for use in composite steel- concrete construction to connect composite open section steel beams to concrete filled steel square tubular columns. The connection was made possible using anchored blind bolts along with two through bolts. It was designed to act compositely with the in-situ reinforced concrete slab to achieve an enhanced stiffness and strength. The developed connection was incorporated in the design of a medium rise (five storey) commercial building which was located in low to medium seismicity regions. The lateral load resisting system for the design building consisted of moment resisting frames in two directions. A major full scale test on a sub-assembly of a perimeter moment-resisting frame of the model building was conducted to study the system behaviour incorporating the proposed connection. The behaviour of the proposed connection and its interaction with the floor slab under cyclic loading representing the earthquake events with return periods of 500 years and 2500 years was investigated. The proposed connection was categorized as semi rigid for unbraced frames based on the classification method presented in Eurocode 3. Furthermore, the proposed connection, composite with the floor slab, successfully provided adequate lateral load resistance for the model building.

  • Fragility as one of the most effective methods to evaluate seismic performance, which is greatly affected by damage index. Taking a multi span continuous rigid frame offshore bridge as an example. Based on fragility and reliability theory, considering coupling effect of time-varying durability damage of materials and time-varying attenuation effect of damage index to analyze seismic performance of offshore bridges. Results show that IDA curve considering time-varying damage index is obviously below that without considering; area enclosed by IDA of 1# pier and X-axis under No.1 earthquake considering this effect is 96% of that without considering. Area enclosed by damage index of 1# pier and X-axis under serious damage with considering time-varying damage index is 90% of that without considering in service period. Time-varying damage index has a greater impact on short pier when ground motion intensity is small, while it has a great impact on high pier when the intensity is large. The area enclosed by fragility of bridge system and X-axis under complete destruction considering time-varying damage index is 165% of that without considering when reach designed service life. Therefore, time-varying attenuation effect of damage index has a great impact on seismic performance of bridge in service period.

  • Due to aesthetic, economic, and structural performance, the use of structural hollow sections as columns in both continuous moment resisting and nominally pinned construction is attractive. Connecting the beams to these sections is somewhat problematic as there is no access to the interior of the section to allow for the tightening of a standard bolt. Therefore, bolts that may be tightened from one side, i.e., blind bolts, have been developed to facilitate the use of site bolting for this arrangement. This paper critically reviews available information concerning blind bolting technology, especially the performance of fasteners in shear, tension, and moment resisting connections. Also provided is an explanation of the way in which the results have been incorporated into design guidance covering the particular case of nominally pinned connections. For moment resisting connections, it is concluded that whilst the principle has been adequately demonstrated, sufficient data are currently not available to permit the provision of authoritative design guidance. In addition, inherent flexibilities in the connections mean that performance equivalent to full strength and rigid is unlikely to be achievable: a semicontinuous approach to frame design will therefore be necessary.

  • A bonded plate or a coated part can be debonded by external impact or thermal expansion. To analyse adhesive strength, the blister test is generally adopted. In this paper, a blister test is modelled theoretically and then the stability and bifurcation of the blister are studied under several different cases. The blister is simplified to consist of a pure bending plate attached elastically to the rigid substrate. Expression of the energy release rate is obtained as a form of an explicit function for a circular-type blister or tunnel-type blister grown by controlling the internal pressure or internal volume. Stability and bifurcation are also studied in the frame of the quasi-static evolution. The study shows that the circular- type blister propagates with the first mode of bifurcation and that the tunnel-type blister propagates with a regular wave. It is proved that the waves have the same form on two side lines of the tunnel and that the wave length can be obtained. When the internal pressure is controlled, the blister is unstable, but when the internal volume is controlled, it is stable.
