  • This paper introduces optimization techniques to design engine mount properties for passenger vehicle. The design targets are divided into three cases such as optimal positioning of powertrain modes, minimizing vibration of deriver's seat in idling and driving conditions. The proper models, mechanisms of vibration, and characteristics of optimization problems are discussed.

  • Mahalanobis Taguchi-System (MTS) has been used in different diagnostic applications to make quantitative decisions by constructing a multivariate system using data analytic methods without any assumption regarding statistical distribution. MTS performs Taguchi's fractional factorial design based on the Mahahlanobis distance as a performance metric. In this study, MTS used for analyzing automotive ride satisfaction, which measured as a CSR(Customer Satisfaction Rating). The automobile which has a good CSR score treated as a normal group for constructing Mahalanobis space. The results of this research show that two attribute (Impact Hardness and Memory Shake) have a minus gain value and can be removed from further analysis. With the linear regression model, the difference of CSR between using all 6 attributes and just using significant 4 attributes compared.

  • The vibration of a vehicle, which is caused by and transmitted from the engine, has significant effect on the ride comfort and the dynamic characteristics of the engine mount system have direct influence on the vibration and noise of the vehicle. This paper examines the body shake caused by the engine excitation force on engine key on/off of a medium truck by experiment and simulation. The analysis model consists of the engine, a body including the frame, front and rear suspensions and tires. The force element between the body and the suspension is modeled as a combination of a suspension spring and a damper. The engine shake obtained from the experiment was compared with the result of the computer simulation, and by using the verified computer model, parametric study of the body shake on engine key on/off is performed with changing the stiffness of an engine mount rubber, the engine mount angle, and the position of engine mounts.

This paper examines the body shake caused by the engine excitation force on engine key-off of a jeep by experiment and computer simulation using a general purpose mechanical system program, DADS. The computer simulation model consists of the engine, body including frame, and front and rear axles and each axle has right and left tires. The force element between body and suspension is modeled as a combination of suspension spring and damper, and the unsprung mass has roll and pitch motion. The body shake obtained from experiment was compared with the result of computer simulation. Parametric study of the body shake on engine key-off is performed with changing the stiffness of engine mount rubber, the engine mount installation angle and position of engine mounts by using the verified computer simulation model.

  • Tire flat spot is a deformation which occurs around the contact patch during long-period parking and does hardly recovered even after driving. The deformation makes a tire self-excited and ride comfort gets worse. In this study, it is shown that the flat spot can be evaluated by measuring change in radial run out or force. Its effects on vibration at vehicle floor and steering wheel are also revealed. Finally it is shown that the flat spot is likely to occur if the inflation pressure is low and the tire is suppressed by a heavy load at a high temperature.

  • According to the developments of automobile industry, the technology to enhance noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) performance has been studying in a point of view of ride comfort and quietness. Especially the use of computer aided engineering(CAE) simulation tools such as finite element(FE) analysis allows engineers to efficiently evaluate NVH performance. This paper presents the method to bulid FE models for full vehicle including engine, transmission. suspension and steering system, also to evaluate vibration performance of full vehicle. The full vehicle model, which is discussed, is correlated with the result of the frequency response measurement in the case of the car shake performance for high speed driving.

  • The important dynamic specifications in the aluminum automobile body design are the vibrations and crashworthiness in the views of ride comforts and safety. Thus, considerable effort has been invested into improving the performance of mechanical structures comprised of the interactive multiple sub-structures. Most mechanical structures are complex and are essentially multi-criteria optimization problems with objective functions retained as constraints. Each weight factor can be defined according to the effects and priorities among objective functions, and a feasible Pareto-optimal solution exists for the criteria-defined constraints. In this paper, a multi-criteria design based on the Pareto-optimal sensitivity is applied to the vibration qualities and crushing characteristics of front structure in the automobile body design. The vibration qualities include the idle, wheel unbalance and road shake. The crushing characteristic of front structure is the axial maximum peak load.
