Species-area and species-quadrat number curves were used to determine the minimum sampling size and the minimum quadrat number for weed data collection in transplanted rice. In both cases, characteristic curves that first increased abruptly and then leveled off as fewer species were added with increased sampling size or quadrat number were obtained. Using these techniques, it was determined that three quadrats each 0.3㎡ (0.5m ${\times}$0.6m) in area were needed to adequately represent the weed community when it was sampled at rice heading.
This study was conducted to improve weeding effect by rice bran farming technique. In the weeding effect experiment by application timing control of rice bran and soybean cake, weeding efficacy was the highest at the treatment of conventional application of rice bran. The treatment of soybean cake with rice bran was unfavorable, but Echinochloa crus-galli occurred little at the treatment of soybean cake at 5 days after transplanting, so it is thought that further study about inhibitor of early E. crus-galli occurrence in soybean cake is necessary. Cultivating weeder was effective at the treatments of rice bran and soybean cake together, of which weed occurrence was more than conventional rice bran, and precise experiments about cultivating weeding time and method will be necessary.
An experiment was conducted at the greenhouse of the International Rice Research Institute in 1987 to find out the character of dry matter production, the potential seed production ability and the ecological and physiological strategies to adaptation. For these, two rice cultivars, IR64(lowland rice) and UPLRi-5(upland rice), and seven weed species were used ; Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook. f., E. cress-galls ssp. hispidula (Retz.) Honda, E. colons (L.) Link, Monochoria vaginalis (Burin. f.), Ludwigia octovalvis Jacq.) Raven, Fimbristylis miliacea Vahl and Cyperus difformis L. Adaptation strategies of weed species varied by species. However, they had efficient seed production strategy through different ways. In general, sedge weed species (F. miliacea and C. difformis) produced great amount of seeds at the expense of seed size through greater ratooning ability and low relative dry weight for flowering. For broadleaved weed species, greater number of descendants were obtained through high plasticity and low relative dry weight for flowering (M. vaginalis) or greater growth ability through effective photosynthetic efficiency (L. octovalvis). Grass weed species, on the other hand, produced their seeds through effective growth (net assimilation rate and relative growth rate), high ratooning ability (except E. crus-galls ssp. hispidula) or low relative dry weight to maximum dry weight for flowering (E. glabrescens). The harvest indices of the weed species were considerably lower than those of rice. Fimbristylis miliacea had the greatest ratooning ability followed by C. difformis, E. colons and E. glabrescens. The greatest seed productivity was recorded by C. difformis (279, 000) and L. octovalvis (268,000) while rice produced the least number of seeds (1300-6100). Log seed weight had a negative linear relationship with log seed number (y=6.30-1.48X, $R=-0.965^{**}$). For all species plant plasticity response was not directly correlated with mortality response.
The experiment was carried out to find the feasibility of using Oxyfluorfen in the paddy fields by investigating the difference of selective activity of Oxyfluorfen among rice cultivars and major paddy weed species. The dosage of Oxyfluorfen that show selective activity between rice cultivars and weed species ranged from 0.1 to 0.4kg ai/ha. The degree of growth inhibition was in order of whole-plant soaking application > root soaking application > stem bandage application, and in that case $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen was treated after emergence. Especially the growth inhibition of rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus was low, among others. Photosynthesis was severely inhibited at the Oxyfluorfen level above $10^{-4}$ M in all the tested weeds, but inhibition of respiration was not to be seen. Isolated single cells of two rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus were tolerant to $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen, but those of Echinochloa crus-galli and Sagittaria pygmaea were susceptible comparatively. The growth inhibition of suspension cultured rice cell induced by the increments of Oxyfluorfen concentration, and the degree of inhibition was higher in C.V. Mushakdanti than in C.V. Aichiasahi.
The ability of three Echinochloa colona (L.) Link ecotypes to compete with rice (Oryza sativa L.) was evaluated. For all the ecotypes, E. colona was shorter and produced less leaf area and dry matter than rice at 15 days after seeding (DAS), whereas the reverse was observed from 30 to 60 DAS. Neither E. colona nor rice tillered during the first 15 DAS, but E. colona had greater accumulative tiller length than rice from 15 DAS. Rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colona at 15 DAS. E. colona absorbed greater amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than did rice between 30 and 60 DAS and increase in its density decreased the nutrients uptake of rice. Differences in the competitive ability of the ecotypes were related to the growth characteristics of the ecotypes and the period of competition between the two species. At the early growth stages the Pangasinan ecotype, which increased plant size rapidly and had a shorter life cycle, was more competitive against rice than the Leyte and South Cotabato ecotypes, which had a longer vegetative growth period. However, the reverse was observed at the later growth stages of the ecotypes.
Surveys of weed species in paddy fields were conducted to identify weed occurrence on July 2013. Total 237 sites of paddy fields in 9 City/Gun, Jeonnam Provinces in Korea were investigated. From the survey, 45 weed species in 18 families were identified and classified to 33 annuals and 15 perennials. Based on the occurrence ratio, the most weed species belonged to Poaceae (9 species) and 8 and 4 weed species belonged to Cyperaceae and Scrophulariaceae, respectively. These 21 weed species in the most four families accounted for 46% of total weed occurrence. The most dominant weed species in Korean paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (18.5%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (12.3%), Lemna perpusilla (8.2), Eleocharis kuroguwai (5.2%) and Scirpus juncoides (5.2%). The most dominant weed species in machine transplanting paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (14%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (12%) and in water seeded rice paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (25%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (11%). This information could be useful for estimation of future weed occurrence, weed population dynamics and establishment of weed control methods in paddy fields.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate effective weed control in direct-seeded rice under dry fields. The results obtained are as follows. Cyhalofop/bentazone EW and cyhalofop/pendimethalin EC were very effective for the weed control but cyhalofop/cinosulfuron WP and cyhalofop/azimsulfuron SC were tended to exhibit the lower weeding effect. The plant height and the tiller number of rice were not greatly affected by herbicides, but rice yield was greatly influenced by them. The control efficacy was observed the extend of 94% until 60days after seeding under the treatment of systematic herbicides such as foliar applied pendimethalin propanil EC at 15days after seeding mowed by pyrazosulfuron molinate GR at 5days after irrigation. Irrigation at 25days after seeding was able to control annual weeds by the extent of 25% and exhibited control effect of 94% on systematic treatment of herbicides compared with that of 35days after seeding.
The effect of mixed treatments of wood vinegar and sulfonylurea-based herbicides on weed control, yield and yield components, and quality of rice was investigated. Two herbicides were tested namely: imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb[ethyl-1-(2-chloroimidazo[1,2-$\alpha$]pyridin-3-ylsulfonyl)-3-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl) urea+S-4-chlorobenzyl diethyl(thiocarbamate)], and bensulfuronmethyl+butachlor [methyl $\alpha$-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylcarbamoyl)sulfamoyl]-o-toluate+N-butoxymethyl-2-chloro-2',6'-diethylacetanilide]. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 5 treatments. Treatments used were recommended(RH: 100%) and half-recommended(HRH: 50%) application rates of each herbicide. Half-recommended application rates were combined with 1 mL wood vinegar $500mL\;water^{-1}$(500) and 1 mL wood vinegar $1000mL\;water^{-1}$(1000) wood vinegar. Plots for no herbicide treatments were also prepared and used as control. Results showed that wood vinegar significantly increased efficacy of HRH in bensulfuron-methyl+butachlor while high efficacy was already obtained in HRH treatment of imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb. Wood vinegar did not improve the efficacy of imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb but improved rice yield. Significantly similar rice yields were obtained in the HRH+1000 WV and RH treatments of both herbicides. There were no significant variations in the yield components among the treatments; however, differences in yield can be attributed to the variations in the spikelet number and ripening ratio. Data on rice quality analysis did not show clear trend on the effects of the treatments on grain appearance and nutritional quality.
When rice straw was mulched, the inhibition of weed growth was observed in the barley field. This study was carried to indentify the influence of rice straw extract on germination, shoot and root growth of barley and water foxtail, according to extraction rate, temperature, growth stage, variety and soaking time. The inhibition rate of germination, shoot and root length of barley and water foxtail was higest in rice straw extract of $24^{\circ}C$, 5hours, 10%(w/v). Daerimbyeo's extract among 17 rice varieties inhibited growth of barley most, but Anjoongbyeo's was lowest. Among five growth stages, extract at seedling stages inhibited growth of barly and water foxtail most. Among 10 barley varieties, Seaolbori showed the greatest growth inhibition by rice straw extract.
This experiment was conducted to find out selective herbicides which are safe to the rice seedlings and to provide effective weed control method in protected semi-irrigated rice seedbed. There was no crop injury in rice with benzophenap [2-(4-2, 4-dichloro-3-methylbenzoyl)-1, 3-dimethyl-pyrazol-5-yl-oxy)-4'-methyl acetophenone] (240g), pyrazoxyfene [1,3-dimethyl-4-(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl)-Sphenacyloxy pyrazole] (200g), chlormethoxynil [2,4-dichlorophenyl-4-nitro-3-methoxyphenyl ether] (180g), dimepiperate [S-(1-methyl-1-phenethyl)-piperidine-l-carbathioate] (210g), dimepiperate + probenazol [3-allyloxy-1,2-benzisothiazol-1,1-dioxide] (210 + 120g) mixture and dimepiperate + probenazol + molinate [S-ethyl-N,N-hexamethylene-thiol-carbamate] (120 + 120 + 120g) mixture at times of application studied. Butachlor [2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl-N-buthoxymethyl acetanilide] + pyrazolate [4-(2,4-dichlorbenzoyl)-1,3dimethyl-pyrazol-5-yl-p-toluene-sulfonate] (70 + 120g) mixture and butachlor + chlormethoxynil (60 + 120g) mixture caused root length to shorten and root viability to decrease. However, the crop injury was recovered at 25 days after seeding. Benzophenap, pyraxoxyfene and butachlor + pyrazolate mixture were effective for weed control when applied at 2 days before seeding. Chlormethoxynil and butachlor + chlormethoxynil mixture was very effective for controlling annual weed. Dimepiperate, dimepiperate + probenazol mixture and dimepiperate + probenazol + molinate mixture did not control most weeds except for Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.
