Rice stripe virus (RSV) disease is one of the major constraints in rice production, transmitted by the small brown planthopper (SBPH; Laodelphax striatellus). Upon RSV infection, plants develop typical symptoms, which include chlorosis and weakness of newly emerged leaves, white and yellow spots, stripe on leaves, and necrotic and wilting leaves, resulting in plant growth inhibition, oxidative damage that may culminate in programmed cell death (PCD) and plant death in severe epidemics. Although RSV-resistant quantitative trait loci (QTLs), Stv-a, Stv-b, and Stv-bi, were mapped using various resistant varieties, one RSV-resistant gene, OsSOT1, has been identified so far. In this study, we used the rice cultivar Zenith, known to carry Stv-b, to investigate novel RSV-genes through fine mapping. Therefore, we crossed Zenith (Donor parent, RSV resistant) with Ilpum (Recurrent parent, RSV susceptible) to fine-map using a BC2F2 population of 2100 plants. Chromosome segment introgression lines that were heterozygous at a different region were selected, two types of heterozygous lines showed an heterozygous genotype between Sid2 and Sid75 to Indel9 and RM6680. Interestingly, we identified qSTV11Z region harboring Stv-b, covering about 171-kb region between the InDel markers Sid75 and Indel8. The localization of qSTV11Z provides useful information that could be used for marker-assisted selection and determination of genetic resources in rice breeding.

Relay intercropping system of direct seeded rice and winter cereal is labor saving cultivation and has high land use efficiency in Japan. In this system, rice seeds are direct seeded into inter-row space of winter cereals (wheat or barley) in March or April. If the direct seeding of rice is conducted before stem elongation phase or using suitable seeder, these are little effect to yield of winter cereals. Though the seeds are generally thiuram treated, it's a matter that seedling establishment rate (SER) of direct seeded rice is low and unstable. The cause of low SER has not been revealed. In present study, with the aim to reveal causes of low SER, we conducted experiments and investigated the SER, and analyzed some factors that might affect SER. Experiment1: In 2015, 2016, we buried rice seeds underground, and investigated the transition of the seed survival rates (SSR). Seeds were thiuram-treated or non-treated. In 2 periods, SSR of thiuram-treated seeds were significantly higher than non-treated seeds. In 2016, thiuram-treated seeds were high in SSR (almost 75%) at April 30th, but low SER (10~27%) after harvest of winter cereals. Therefore, almost all of seed death might have been happen after germination. Analysis 1: We investigated the SER and cultivation conditions in Ibaraki pref. for several years. Meteorological factors were referred from the nearest point of AMeDAS. From mean temperature (MT) among 5days after and before the day, we divided the period of seeding ~June 20 to phase1~4. We defined each phase as below; Phase1: $MT{\leq}10^{\circ}C$, Phase2: $10^{\circ}C<MT{\leq}15^{\circ}C$, Phase3:$15^{\circ}C<MT{\leq}20^{\circ}C$, Phase4: $MT>20^{\circ}C$. We analyzed the correlation of SER and meteorological factors by each phase. Total number of days in phase 1~4 was significantly negative correlated with SER. In phase1, total rain fall and number of soil wetting days were significantly negative correlated with SER. In phase2~4, only MT was significantly positive correlated with SER. This result suggested that rainfalls in phase1 declined seed vigor to emergence from soil surface, by repeated water absorption and re-dry. From these present studies, it was suggested that one of factors of low SER of direct seeded rice in relay intercropping system is changing of water condition by rainfalls in phase1 ($MT{\leq}10^{\circ}C$). To improve SER, it's necessary to consider something seed treatments such as prevent water absorption during phase1. However, 58~60% of seeds seemed to die during May. It's suggested that, if seeds are thiuram treated, almost all of seeds can germinate underground, but the seed vigor to emergence from soil surface are insufficient. Further studies are needed to reveal the rest causes that is happening during emergence from soil surface.
Objective: The experiment aimed to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) in 10 brown rice samples fed to pigs, and to construct predictive models for SID of CP and AA based on the physical characteristics and chemical composition of brown rice. Methods: Twenty-two cannulated pigs (initial body weight: 42.0±1.2 kg) were assigned to a replicated 11×3 incomplete Latin square design, including an N-free diet and 10 brown rice diets. Each period included 5 d adaptation and 2 d ileal digesta collection. Chromic oxide was added at 0.3% to all the diets as an indigestible marker for calculating the ileal CP and AA digestibility. Results: The coefficients of variation of all detected indices for physical characteristics and chemical composition, except for bulk weight, dry matter (DM) and gross energy, in 10 brown rice samples were greater than 10%. The SID of CP, lysine (Lys), methionine, threonine (Thr), and tryptophan (Trp) in brown rice was 77.2% (62.6% to 85.5%), 87.5% (80.3% to 94.3%), 89.2% (78.9% to 98.9%), 55.4% (46.1% to 67.6%) and 92.5% (86.3% to 96.3%), respectively. The best prediction equations for the SID of CP, Lys, Thr, and Trp were as following, SIDCP = -664.181+8.484×DM (R2 = 0.40), SIDLys = 53.126+6.031×ether extract (EE)+0.893×thousand-kernel volume (R2 = 0.66), SIDThr = 39.916+7.843×EE (R2 = 0.41), and SIDTrp = -361.588+4.891×DM+0.387×total starch (R2 = 0.85). Conclusion: Overall, a great variation exists among 10 sources of brown rice, and the thousand-grain volume, DM, EE, and total starch can be used as the key predictors for SID of CP and AA.

Rice type, color difference, amylograph of milled rice and texturograph of cooked rice were not significant between two cultivated region. And fat, protein, Mg and Ca in milled rice were not significant but p, K and Na were significantly different at l% the level between them as 2, 210~2, 420ppwt 1, 304~1, 538ppm and 212~236ppm in Gyeonggi province cultivated rice, and 2, 130~2, 180ppm, 1, 133~1, 180ppm and 197~217ppm in other province, respectively. Also amylose content, alkali distribution and gel consistency were not significant between them.
The occurrence of Rice stripe virus (RSV) has been confirmed in some parts of South Korea. In the current year, this was observed to be limited in the double cropping zones of the southern region. Earlier, RSV occurred largely in the west coast regions of the country, particularly in Gangwha, Gyeonggi-do in 2001; and Buan, Jeollabuk-do and Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do in 2007. This study was carried out to determine the nationwide extent of RSV occurrence by investigating RSV infestations in different latitudes and altitudes. Result revealed a recent reported occurrence of RSV in the southern region (Milyang, latitude $35^{\circ}$), a reported occurrence in the northern region (Cheolwon, latitude $38^{\circ}$) in 2005, and in the middle northern region of the east coast (Goseon, latitude $38^{\circ}$) as newly confirmed from this investigation. Results also confirmed the occurrence of RSV in a wide range of altitude from the plains (Milyang, 17 m altitude) to the alpine regions (Jinbu, 576 m) including the middle mountains (Sangju, altitude 285 m). The RSV occurrence in Jinbu in the alpine region and at Goseong and most of the northern end regions were confirmed only this year. The results of the present study confirmed that RSV is a fast-spreading disease in rice plant cultivation regions of the entire country.

In this paper, a laboratory investigation was carried out to estimate the strength improvement of quicklime mixture with fly ash and rice husk ash for the effective use of surplus soils, and the shear strength with curing time was estimated at lime 10 percent with the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content. The effect of strength improvement has been established through the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content from the samples taken at Samsan region, Ulsan. The test results indicated that the presence of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash encouraged the stabilization efficiency of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash, and increased shear strength. Furthermore, it is necessary for inquiring into the relationship between the characteristics of strength and the chemical components.
Twenty-one lowland rice genotypes were evaluated for their stability parameters with respect to grain yield in a multi locational trial at five different sites of Eastern India viz. CRRI, Cuttack (Orissa); OUAT, Bhubaneswar (Orissa); CRS, Masodha (UP); RAU, Pusa (Bihar) and RARS, North Lakhimpur (Assam). Pooled analysis of variance reflects existence of genotype x environment interactions and contribution of both linear and nonlinear components to genotype (G) x environment (E) interactions. Through stability parameter analysis it was found that Rayda $\textrm{B}_3$, CR 778-95 and CR 661-236 were suitable for over all environments where as Sabita, OR 1334-16 and OR 1358-RGA-4 were suitable for rich environments. PSR 1209-2-3-2, CR 780-1937, Ambika, OR 877-ST-4-2 and CR 662-2211 were identified for poor environments.

This study evaluated variations in the paddy rice water demand based on the continuous changing in rice transplanting period and ponding depth at the four study paddy fields, which represent typical rice producing regions in Korea. Total 7 scenarios on rice transplanting periods were applied while minimum ponding depth of 0 and 20 mm were applied in accordance with maximum ponding depth ranging from 40 mm to 100 mm with 20 mm interval. The weather data from 2013 to 2019 was also considered. The results indicated that the highest rice water demand occurred at high temperature and low rainfall region. Increased rice transplanting periods showed higher rice water demand. The rice water demand for 51 transplanting days closely matched with the actual irrigation water supply. In case of ponding depth, the results showed that the minimum ponding depth had a proportional relationship with rice water demand, while maximum ponding depth showed the contrary results. Minimum ponding depth had a greater impact on rice water demand than the maximum ponding depth. Therefore, these results suggest that increasing the rice transplanting period, which reflects the current practice is desirable for a reliable estimation of rice water demand.

The aim of this study is to analyze the contribution of regional water resources through the gap between water used for rice production and water used for consumption. The blue water use for rice production and for consumption was quantified and the regional blue water flows were estimated using the virtual water concept from 1995 to 2010. About $1134.4Mm^3/yr$ of blue water flowed among the provinces and metropolises of Korea, and about 28.5 % of total blue water flows came from Jeonnam province. In addition, blue water usage for rice was classified into three categories: water for production, internal consumption, and overproduction in each region. In Jeonnam, $633.8Mm^3/yr$ of blue water totally used for rice production, and 50.9 % and 15.5 % were used for external and internal rice consumption, respectively. The other 33.6 % was used for over production of rice for food security. This study assumed the blue water flows depended on the gap between virtual water use for rice production and consumption. However, the analysis of regional blue water usage and flows might show the importance of other region's water resources, and make policy decision-makers aware of the integrated water management among the regions.

Rice is a staple crop used by more than 50% of the world's population. However, in rapidly changing climates such as abnormal high temperatures and typhoons, the food security of rice is greatly threatened. Plant factories have the advantage of being able to grow crops regardless of climate change, so they can be a response to climate change. However, in plant factories, crops are grown by placing the culture bed vertically, so shorter crops are more efficient. Therefore, in order to search for genes related to the height of rice, QTL analysis was performed by investigating the plant height of Cheongcheong/Nagdong doubled haploids from 2017 to 2021. Plant height of rice investigated for five years showed a normal distribution, meaning that genes related to rice height are quantitative traits. As a result of QTL analysis, a total of 12 QTLs were detected, and QTLs overlapped for 5 years in RM12285-RM212 on chromosome 1. Also, The QTLs of plant height detected in 2019 has a LOD score of 17.64 in RM12285-RM212 region of chromosome 1. As a result of QTL analysis, 44 height-related genes were searched from the detected chromosomes, and among them, Os01g0757200 in RM 12285-RM212 on chromosome 1 region, named OsGA2ox3q1, were selected as genes related to the height of rice. The relative gene expression level of OsGA2ox3q1 was highly expressed in cultivar with short culm lines, and was low expressed in cultivar with long culm lines. OsGA2ox3q1 can be used to breed semi-dwarf cultivar in rice more efficiently.
