The pattern of rice cultivation in Korea is changing from hand transplanting and machine transplanting into direct-seeding for low input and cost-down practices. However, there are still some obstacles to establish the direct-seeding cultural practices because of poor seedling stand, lodging, and weed infestation. In particular, there were much more and wide weed occurrence in direct-seeding rice as compared with the transplanted rice. Weed occurrence in terms of dry weight of weeds was highest in dry direct-seeded rice followed by sowing an puddled soil, sowing on submerged soil in order as compared with transplanting with infant rice seedling. Echinochloa crux-galli was a common dominant weed with 35~44% distribution in any direct-seeding methods. The dominant weed species were E. crux-galli, Cyperus difformis, C. serotinus, and Ludwigia prostrata in dry-seeded rice. The dominant weed species in water-seeded rice were E. crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, and Monochoria vaginalis. Yield loss of rice due to weeds at weedy condition was 96% in dry direct-seeded rice. In water-seeded rice, yield loss was 61%, whereas yield loss was 40% in machine transplanting with infant rice seedling.
Correlation between rice yield loss and infection time of neck blast after panicle emergence was analyzed in paddy fields at Icheon in 1999 and 2000. As the neck blast occurred at early heading stage, the yield loss of a early maturity variety, Jinmibyeo, ranged from 83.9% to 81.6%, while it ranged from 44.3% to 33.1% when the disease developed 30 days after heading. The regression equations of yield loss(y) caused by the neck blast infection time(x) in Jinmibyeo were y =1.2717x + 79.523(R2 = 0.9487) and y = 1.6872x + 74.545(R2 = 0.7993) in 1999 and 2000. In a mid-lately maturity variety, Chucheongbyeo, yield loss ranged from 64.9% to 47.8% when the disease developed at early heading stage. While it ranged from 29.1% to 8.9% when the disease occurred 40 days after heading. The regression equations of yield loss caused by the disease in Chucheongbyeo were y= 1.2717x + 79.523($R^2$ = 0.9487) and y = 1.6872x + 74.545(($R^2$ = 0.7993) in 1999 and 2000. Weights of 1,000 rice grains of Jinmibyeo and Chucheongbyeo were also drastically decreased to 38.3% and 57.3%, respectively, compared to healthy control when the disease occurred at early heading stage. However, weights of the two cultivars were 87.6% and 92.9% compared to control when the disease developed after 40 days of heading. Results indicated that there is a highly negative correlation between rice yield loss and infection time of the neck blast.
The structural differences between healthy and diseasedpanicle necks caused by Pyricularia oryzae were observed using electron-microscope. In the diseased panicle neck, the infection hyphae of the rice blast pathogen grew through the sclerenchymatous fiber tissue and reached to the central internal lacuna. Since the pathogen grew through the sclerenchymatous fiber tissues, the vascular bundle composed with xylem and phloem had been destroyed and finally the nutrients from the leaf and stem were not able to be transported into the grains. Infection of panicle base by the blast pathogen until 20 days after heading caused more than 50% of yield loss in both Jinmibyeo and Chucheongbyeo. There was a positive correlation between incidence of the panicle blast and rice yield losses. The regression equations between incidence of the panicle blast and yield losses were y= -3.61+496.7 ($R^2$=0.70) in Jinmibyeoand y=-3.93+520.2 ($R^2$=0.82) in Juanbyeo. The panicleblast caused deterioration of grain quality. Healthy grain rate was reduced by increase of panicle blast infection.
We investigated the first symptom emerging date of rice bacterial leaf blight disease during four years from 2002 to 2005. The disease occurrence date was earlier 20$\sim$30 days in 2005 than that of 2002. The damage in different rice growth stage by the bacterial disease on rice yield and grain quality in southern part of Korea was examined. The disease decreased rice yield following by increased infection rates. Slight loss in rice yield and brown head rice rate were observed at below 10% level of infected leaf area, while over 25% infected leaf area caused the significant decrease in rice yield and brown head rice rate. More than 50% of the infected leaf area rate caused 29% yield reduction in case of infection at panicle formation stage and 18% of brown head rice rate. Cooked rice quality was also affected in the diseased rice by damage in palatability score and viscosity.
Rice varieties showing different degree of resistance were compared with their yield losses due to the damage of sheath blight disease in field condition through 1985 to 1986. Gayabyeo showed the lowest value of disease severity among 5 varieties tested in 1985 and 8 in 1986. and Taebaekbyeo, Kwanakbyeo and Labelle showed higher value of disease severity under the condition of artificial or natural disease inoculation. Grain yield of Gayabyeo, a moderate resistant rice variety, was reduced by 0.3 to 5% in the rate due to sheath blight disease damage and Taebaekbyeo. a susceptible variety. showed the highest in the rate of yield loss, 6.8 to 25.8 %. The matured grain rate and 1000-grain weight of the matured tiller were decreased when the developing disease lesion reached to the flag leaf, and then panicle weight was decreased more than 25 % compared with panicle of healthy culm. In conclusion, Gayabyeo showed the lower rate of yield loss because of slow development of disease to the upper leaves after initial disease occurence on the lower parts of rice plants.
Drought caused by global climate change is one of serious problems for rice cultivation. However, it was little reported the impact of drought on rice cultivation in Korea. In here, to assess impact of drought on rice varieties in Korean climate condition, growth characteristics and yield components of rice were compared on irrigated and partially irrigated rice paddy field. First, we have chosen 11 rice varieties including 'Saeilmi' and 'Shindongjin' which are widely cultivated in Korea. For partially irrigated rice paddy treatment, we have withheld irrigation from 25 days after transplanting and water supply was totally dependent on rainfall for rice cultivation. When we examined early plant height and tiller number of these varieties on partially irrigated rice paddy were reduced 1.6% to 18.4% and 10.4% to 33.1%, respectively, and these reduction rate were highly correlated with yield loss in our experimental conditions. Among rice yield components, panicle number was decreased 10.5% to 30.1% according to rice varieties and reduced panicle number was highly correlated with yield loss. Grain number per panicle, grain filling rate and 1,000 seeds weight did not have correlation with yield loss of rice varieties. These result means that growth stage, especially the tillering stage, is seriously affected by drought on rice cultivation in Korea. And we suggest that 'Saeilmi', 'Ilmi' and 'Ilpum' are good for rice cultivation on drought prone rice field in Korea.

Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the critical factors that drive change in rice cropping systems. Within this changing system, less water irrigation and chemical fertilizer are seriously considered, as well combining precision farming technologies with irrigation control. Water and phosphorus (P) fertilizer are two of the most critical inputs in rice cultivation. Due to the lack of water availability in the system, P fertilizer is not available, especially in acidic soil conditions. Moreover, the various types of abiotic stresses, such as drought, high temperature, salinity, submergence, and limited fertilizer result in significant yield loss in the system. Even in the late stage of growth, the waves caused by diseases and insects make the field more unfruitful. Therefore, agronomists and breeders need to identify the secondary phenotypes to estimate the yield loss of when stress appears. The prediction will be clearer if we have a set of markers tagging the causal variation and the associated precise phenotype indices. Although there have been various studies for abiotic stress tolerance, we still lack functional molecular markers and phenotype indices. This is due to the underlying challenges caused by environmental factors in highly unpredictable regional and yearly environmental conditions in the field system. Pupl (phosphorus uptake 1) is still known as the first QTL associated with phosphorus uptake and have been validated in different field crops. Interestingly, some pyramiding lines of Pupl and other QTLs for other stress tolerances showed preferable phenotypes in the yield. Precise physiological studies with the help of genomics are on-going and some results will be discussed.
This study was undertaken to investigate the crop yield of pear and rice cultivated around Onsan Industrial complex, the sulfur content in their leaves, and the crop loss. The correlation between them is as follows: 1) The sulfur content in pear and rice leaves in studied area is higher than that in unpolluted area, and there is crop loss in studied area. 2) There is a good correlation between sulfur content and crop loss of pear and rice. The air pollution in studied area is considered to be the reason of the crop loss. 3) The regression equation between the sulfur content in crop leaves and the crop loss seems to be useful for the crop loss rate by sulfur dioxide in the damaged area and that seems to be a good reference for the compensation of pear and rice loss by sulfur dioxide gas emission from Onsan Industral Complex.

Recent unpredictable climate change is a major cause of rice yield loss. In particular, methane is a key factor in global warming. Therefore rice breeders are trying to breed the reducing-methane gas emission rice using the crossbreeding method. However, the traditional crossbreeding method takes 8 to 10 years to breed a cultivar, and the anther culture method developed to shorten the breeding cycle also takes 6 to 7 years. On the other hand, CRISPR/Cas9 accurately edits the target trait and can rapidly breed rice cultivars by editing the target trait as a homozygous in 2-3 years. In addition, exogenous genetic elements such as Cas9 can be isolated from the G1 generation. Therefore, the flowering time was regulated by applying CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and OsCKq1 genome-editing (OsCKq1-G) rice with early flowered and high yield was bred in the field. Genome-editing of OsCKq1 applied CRISPR/Cas9 technology up-regulates the expression of the flowering promotion gene Ehd1 under long-day conditions induces early flowering and increases the yield by increasing the 1,000-grain weight. And as the generations advanced, each agricultural trait indicated a low coefficient of variation. As a result, indicated that OsCKq1 plays an important role in regulating the flowering time and is related to the trait determining yield. Therefore, OsCKq1-G can suggest a breeding strategy for the Net-Zero national policy for reducing-methane gas emission rice by shortening the breeding cycle with the early flowered, and high-yield rice. CRISPR/Cas9 technology is a rapid and accurate breeding technology for breeding rice cultivars with important characteristics.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate sediment yield reduction under various field slope conditions with rice straw mat. The Vegetative Filter Strip Model-W (VFSMOD-W) and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) were used for simulation of sediment yield reduction effect of rice straw mat. The Universe Soil Loss Equation Practice factor (USLE P factor), being able to reflect simulation of rice straw mat in the agricultural field, were estimated for each slope with VFSMOD-W and measured soil erosion values under 5, 10, and 20 % slopes. Then with the regression equation for slopes, USLE P factor was derived and used as input data for each Hydrological Response Unit (HRU) in the SWAT model. The SWAT Spatially Distributed-HRU (SD-HRU) pre-processor module was utilized, moreover, in order to consider spatial location and topographic features (measured topographic features by field survey) of all HRU within each subwatershed in the study watershed. Result of monthly sediment yield without rice straw mat (Jan. 2000 - Aug. 2007) was 814.72 ton/month, and with rice straw mat (Jan. 2000 - Aug. 2007) was 526.75 ton/month, which was reduced as 35.35 % compared without it. Also, during the rainy season (from Jun. to Sep. 2000 - 2007), when without vs. with rice straw mat, monthly sediment indicated 2,109.54 ton and 1,358.61 ton respectively. It showed about 35.60 % was reduced depending on rice straw mat. As shown in this study, if rice straw mat is used as a Best Management Practice (BMP) in the sloping fields, rainfall-driven sediment yield will be reduced effectively.
