  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information on mainstem, branch and leaf characteristics related to canopy for development of high yielding cultivar using 70 Korean soybean cultivars developed from 1913 to 2000. Variations of canopy width, branch length, and canopy width/length ratio were higher compared to other characteristics among 12 mainstem and branch characters. Variations of petiole angle, leaflet width/length ratio and compound leaf dry weight were higher than other characteristics among eight leaf characters related to plant canopy. Three classifications of soybean cultivars were used based on usage: I)soy sauce and tofu, II)bean sprout, and III)cooking with rice. Canopy width/length ratio was higher in group III, cooking with rice than group I, soy sauce and tofu, and group II, bean sprout, and there was no difference between the two, group I and group II. The total branch length/main stem height ratio was higher in group II, bean sprout and group III, cooking with rice than group I, soy sauce and tofu. Mainstem and branch characteristics related to plant canopy were classified into four groups by ratio of canopy width/length and total branch length/main stem length, respectively. Soybean cultivars with narrow canopy and high dependence of mainstem were Danweonkong, Keumkangkong, Shelby, and Shinpaldalkong. Soybean cultivars with broad canopy and high dependence of mainstem were Kanglim, Keumkangdaelip, and Jinyulkong, and a cultivar with broad canopy and high dependence of branch were Geomjeongkong 2. Leaflet length/width ratio was lowest in cooking with rice and there was no difference between soy sauce and tofu and bean sprout. Compound leaf area was largest in cooking with rice and smallest in bean sprout. Leaf petiole length was short in bean sprout and there was no difference between soy sauce and tofu and bean sprout. Leaf petiole angle was highest in cooking with rice and lowest in bean sprout. Leaf type was classified into four groups based on leaflet width/length ratio and compound leaf area, respectivly. Buseok and Taekwangkong had an oval leaflet and largest area of compound leaf. Eunhakong and Sohokong had extreme narrow leaflet and smallest area of compound leaf. Leaf petiole type was classified into three and four groups based on leaf petiole length and angle, respectively. A soybean cultivar with the shortest petiole length and smallest petiole angle was Eunhakong and cultivars with short petiole length and large petiole angle were Alchankong, Muhankong, and Pureunkong. A soybean cultivar with long petiole length and small petiole angle was Sinpaldalkong 2. Among a total of 70 Korean soybean cultivars, Eunhakong had an extreme narrow type in leaf, smallest compound leaf area, shortest petiole length, and smallest petiole angle of compound leaf.

  • Barnyardgrass had relatively higher growth vigor at the earlier growth stage than inbred rice did, showing the 2 fold higher $\alpha$-amylase activity during the periods of germination and large leaf area Expansion with high net photosynthetic rate at the earlier autotrophic stage, but it performed weak growth at the late growth stage. However, the hlybrid rice Shanyou 63 had significantly higher $\alpha$-amylase activity and net photosynthetic rate than that of barnyardgrass, exhibiting heterosis for two physiologica1 traits during the germination (6~12 days) and autotrophic phase, respectively. Accordingly, hybrid rice, Shanyou 63, exhibited heterotic effect at the early growing stage when were presented with barnyardgrass. Shanyou 63 exhibited stronger tillering ability, faster leaf area expansion and higher net photosynthetic rate than those of barnyardgrass.

  • In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.

  • In order to enhance the fungicidal activity of the thifluzamide formulation against rice sheath blight, the surfactants which was able to facilitate the foliar uptake or increase the leaf deposit of thifluzamide on rice plants were selected, and the formulations containing the surfactants were tested to compare the fungicidal efficacy against the rice sheath blight with a control WP formulation. The WP suspension containing dodecaethylene glycol monohexadecyl ether as an activator increased the foliar uptake of thifluzamide on rice plants, but its fungicidal efficacy against rice sheath blight was decreased. The addition of the combined surfactants with either heptaethylene glycol monoisododecy ether or heptaethylene glycol monotridecyl ether and sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate to WP suspension increased the leaf deposition of thif1uzamide at around 5 times of that without a spreader-sticker that median control concentrations of thifluzamide against rice sheath blight were decreased to 4.4 mg $L^{-1}$ and 3.4 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively.

  • To find the varietal differences of the protein accumulation in rice kernel. three rice varieties were planted under the conditions of different planting dates and different nitrogen levels. Samples of leaf blade, culm and rice grain were obtained at 10 day intervals during grain development period, and analyzed by the kjeldahl method for nitrogen content. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The nitrogen contents in leaf and culm were decreased as the grain development progresses. Varietal differences were found in the change of the nitrogen contents in leaf and culm. IR lines, high protein lines, reduced rapidly as the grain development progresses, but Jinheung, a leading variety in central region of Korea, showed slow decline. 2. Heavy nitrogen fertilizer application increased the nitrogen contents in the leaf and culm. Varietal differences were also found. IR lines showed higher increase than the Jinheung. 3. The protein content in brown rice were decreased as the ripening progresses to the maturity. Varietal differences were noticed in the declining trend of the protein content in brown rice. IR lines showed less changes than Jinheung and finally Jinheung showed low protein content than IR lines at maturity stage. 4. Increased nitrogen fortilizer application raised strikingly the protein content of brown rice in the IR lines but much less in the Jinheung.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a technology for estimating rice growth and damage effect according to bacterial leaf blight using UAV multi-spectral imagery. For this purpose, we analyzed the change of aerial images, rice growth factors (plant height, dry weight, LAI) and disease effects according to disease occurrence by using UAV images for 3 rice varieties (Milyang23, Sindongjin-byeo, Saenuri-byeo) from 2017 to 2018. The correlation between vegetation index and rice growth factor during vegetative growth period showed a high value of 0.9 or higher each year. As a result of applying the growth estimation model built in 2017 to 2018, the plant height of Milyang23 showed good error withing 10%. However, it is considered that studies to improve the accuracy of other items are needed. Fixed wing unmanned aerial photographs were also possible to estimate the damage area after 2 to 4 weeks from inoculation. Although sensing data in the multi-spectral (Blue, Green, Red, NIR) band have limitations in early diagnosis of rice disease, for rice varieties such as Milyang23 and Sindongjin-byeo, it was possible to construct the equation of infected leaf area ratio and rice yield estimation using UAV imagery in early and mid-September with high correlation coefficient of 0.8 to 0.9. The results of this study are expected to be useful for farming and policy support related to estimating rice growth, rice plant disease and yield change based on UAV images.

  • Loss of chlorophyll is the visible symptom of leaf senescence and staygreen refers to the delayed leaf senescence in plants. The staygreen gene (SGR) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been identified as its mutation maintains greenness during leaf senescence, and encodes a chloroplast protein required for the initiation of chlorophyll breakdown in plants. In this study, we isolated a rice SGR-homologous gene in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), and transgenic creeping bentgrass plants were obtained by introducing pCAMBIA3301 vector harboring antisense SGR gene under control of the senescence-specific SAG12 promoter. Transgenic plants were selected by herbicide resistance assays and genomic integration of the transgenes was confirmed by PCR analysis. Subsequent analyses demonstrated the staygreen phenotype of the transgenic creeping bentgrass plants with decreased chlorophyll loss during leaf senescence. These results suggest that the antisense SGR expression in creeping bentgrass delays leaf senescence, which provides a way to develop genetically engineered turfgrass varieties with the commercially useful staygreen trait.

  • The aim of this investigation was to examine the antioxidation, physicochemical, and sensory activity of a Korean steamed-rice cake, Sulgidduk, fortified with water extracts from Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) leaf. M. oleifera leaf extracts were added to rice powder at rations of 0.1%, 1% and 10%. To examine antioxidation properties, the scavenging activities of DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals, ABTS+ radicals, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power were investigated. M. oleifera extracts significantly increased the antioxidation activities of Sulgidduk in a dose dependent manner (p<0.05). Physicochemical characteristics were measured by proximate composition, color, texture profile analysis, and sensory evaluations. As the concentration of M. oleifera leaf extracts increased, L-values and a-values significantly decreased while b-values increased. Texture profile analysis demonstrated that the control groups showed significantly higher values for hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and adhesiveness as compared with groups containing M. oleifera leaf extract (p<0.05). In the sensory evaluation, the sample containing 0.1% of M. oleifera leaf extract obtained the best results in overall preference. Taken together, these results suggest that M. oleifera leaf may have the potential to increase the consumer acceptability and the functionality of Sulgidduk.

  • Leaves are an important organism for photosynthesis and transpiration. The shape of leaf is crucial factor affecting plant architecture. V-shape leaf rolling is enhancing canopy photosynthesis by increasing the CO2 penetration and the light capture by reducing the shadow between the leaves. Therefore, moderate leaf rolling is thought to more high grain yield per area than flat leaf. We investigated 278 KRICE_CORE accession's Adaxial Leaf Rolling Index (LRI) in first heading using the following equation. For each accession, genomic DNA was used for sequencing. We sequenced the genomics with ~8 X coverage to detect SNPS. Raw reads were aligned against the rice reference (IRGSP 1.0) for SNP identification and genotype calling. To generate genotype data for GWAS, SNPs were filtered with minor allele frequency 0.05. Finally, 841,134 high-quality SNPs were used for our GWAS. The significant threshold was -log10(P)>7.23. From the results, 2 significance SNP were detected. Considering the LD block of 250kbp, 60 candidate gene were selected including Hypothetical gene and Conserved gene. In this poster, we analyzed candidate gene affecting adaxial Leaf Rolling through single-trait GWAS.
