Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most destructive rice diseases worldwide. The aim of this study was to screen bacterial isolates to efficiently prevent the occurrence of rice blast. A total of 232 bacterial isolates were extracted from nonrhizospheric rice soil and were screened for antifungal activity against M. oryzae using a leaf segment assay. Strains S170 and S9 showed significant antagonistic activity against M. oryzae in vitro and in leaf disk assays, and controlled M. oryzae infection under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that strains S170 and S9 could effectively control rice leaf blast and panicle neck blast after five spray treatments in field. This suggested that the bacterial strains S170 and S9 were valuable and promising for the biocontrol of rice disease caused by M. oryzae. Based on 16S rDNA, and gyrA and gyrB gene sequence analyses, S170 and S9 were identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus, respectively. The research also demonstrated that B. amyloliquefaciens S170 and B. pumilus S9 could colonize rice plants to prevent pathogenic infection and evidently suppressed plant disease caused by 11 other plant pathogenic fungi. This is the first study to demonstrate that B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus isolated from nonrhizospheric rice soil are capable of recolonizing internal rice stem tissues.
In order to investigate the causes of epidemic out break of rice blast disease in 1978, investigations were undertaken in respect of climatic conditions, variety, cultural practice and plant pathology. During 1978, especially in August at heading time, it was higher temperature and humidity, higher frequency and amount of rainfall, lower amount of sunshine and solar radiation than less blast infested years. Nitrogen content in rice plant was higher than previous years. Acreage increase of semi-dwarf varieties brought about a result of proportional increase of new blast races which are able to infect the semi-dwarf varieties. It was concluded that those conditions mentioned above might have caused the result of severe neck blast disease in rice varieties in Korea, 1978.
Incidence of blast caused by Pyricularia grisea Sacc. on 21 leading cultivars and elite lines of rice was investigated in different locations such as Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon, and Naju during three years from 1991 to 1993. Disease index of leaf blast of Dongjinbyeo was high in the blast nursery with range 4 to 9 at Naju, but low at other locations with range 1 to 4. Percentages of diseased leaf area of Joryungbyeo and Daelipbyeo 1 were 4.3 and 12%, respectively in the fields at Jecheon in 1993, but were much lower in the other locations during three years. The incidences of leaf blast of Daelipbyeo 1 were 0.3 and 12.0% at Chuncheon and Jecheon, respectively in 1993, but no disease occurred at Naju during three years. Percentage of diseased panicles of Joryungbyeo was 100% at Icheon and Jecheon in 1993, 92.4% in Suweon 390 at Icheon on 1991 and 100% in Jinbu 15 at Jecheon on 1993. Race distribution of rice blast fungus at Icheon and Jecheon was more varied than that of the other locations.

Pakistan is a top producer and exporter of high-quality rice, but traditional methods are still being used for detecting rice diseases. This research project developed an automated rice blast disease diagnosis technique based on deep learning, image processing, and transfer learning with pre-trained models such as Inception V3, VGG16, VGG19, and ResNet50. The modified connection skipping ResNet 50 had the highest accuracy of 99.16%, while the other models achieved 98.16%, 98.47%, and 98.56%, respectively. In addition, CNN and an ensemble model K-nearest neighbor were explored for disease prediction, and the study demonstrated superior performance and disease prediction using recommended web-app approaches.
Roles of nutrients in controlling plant diseases have been documented for a long time. Among the nutrients having impact on susceptibility/resistance to crop diseases, nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and development. In rice plants, excess nitrogen via fertilization in agricultural systems is known to increase susceptibility to the rice blast disease. Mechanisms underlying such phenomenon, despite its implication in yield and sustainable agriculture, have not been fully elucidated yet. A few research efforts attempted to link nitrogen-induced susceptibility to concomitant changes in rice plant and rice blast fungus in response to excess nitrogen. However, recent studies focusing on phytobiome are offering new insights into effects of nitrogen on interaction between plants and pathogens. In this review, I will first briefly describe importance of nitrogen as a key nutrient for plants and what changes excess nitrogen can bring about in rice and the fungal pathogen. Next, I will highlight some of the recent phytobiome studies relevant to nitrogen utilization and immunity of plants. Finally, I propose the hypothesis that changes in phytobiome upon excessive nitrogen fertilization contribute to nitrogen-induced susceptibility, and discuss empirical evidences that are needed to support the hypothesis.
Incidence of rice blast on new rice cultivars and elite lines was observed from 1995 to 1997 in Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon and Naju areas. The observation was made in the nurseries and fields. In the nurseries, three cultivars Grubyeo, Sangjuchalbyeo and Suwon 414 showed moderate levels of resistance to leaf blast, with the disease index 0 to 5. From the field observation, it was found that cultivars Heugjinjubyeo and Unbong 18 were highly resistant to leaf blast, but susceptible to neck blast. In general, there was a great variation yearly and regionally in the incidence of neck blast within the same cultivar, ranging from 0 to 100%. However, the range of neck blast infection was relatively narrower in the cultivars Yunghaebyeo (0∼2.4%) and Suwon 414 (0∼2.2%) during observation period. Races of rice blast fungus were variable at different areas. Among them dominant races were KI-409, KJ-201 and KJ-301.
Incidence of blast caused by Pyricularia grisea on five new cultivars and four elite lines (C/L) of rice was investigated at different locations, Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon and Naju, 1992 to 1994. Disease indices of leaf blast on the tested C/L except Juanbyeo and Keumnambyeo ranged from 0 to 6 in the blast nursery. Under the field conditions, percentages of diseased leaf area of Kuemnambyeo were 6.5% in Jecheon and 2.8% in Icheon in 1993. The incidence of panicle blast on the C/L except Suweon 394 and Milyang 117 differed depending on the locations and years. In case of Unjangbyeo, panicle blast was rarely observed n the fields in Icheon and Naju, but the disease incidences were 21.8% in Jecheon in 1993 and 16.4% in Chuncheon in 1994. Race distribution of the blast fungus was variable according to the locations. The major race in the Jecheon site was KI-197, which was recently identified.

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most serious diseases that affect the quantity and quality of rice production. The use of resistant rice varieties would be the most effective way to control the rice blast. However R gene incorporation into the rice variety takes time and pathogen could overcome the R gene effects after for a while. For monitoring the rice blast resistance gene distribution in Korean varieties, the four major blast resistance genes against M. oryzae were screened in a number of Korean rice varieties using molecular markers. Of the 120 rice varieties tested, 40 were found to contain the Pi-5 gene, 25 for the Pi-9 gene, 79 for Pi-b and 40 for the Pi-ta gene. None of these rice varieties includes tested 4 R genes. 3 R genes combination, Pi-5/Pi-9/Pi-b, Pi-5, Pi-9.Pi-ta, or Pi-9/Pi-b/Pi-ta were found in 12 varieties, the rice blast disease severity were showed as resistant in the rice verities containing Pi-9/Pi-b/Pi-ta R genes combination, respectively. Also pathogenic diversity of M. oryzae isolates collected in the rice field from 2004 to 2015 in rice field in Korea were analyzed using rice blast monogenic lines, each harboring a single blast resistance gene. Compatibility of blast isolates against rice blast monogenic lines carrying the resistance genes Pi5, Pi9, Pib, and Piz showed dynamic changes by year. It indicates that pathogen has high evolutionary potential adapted host resistances to increase fitness and would lead to rice blast resistance bred into the cultivar becoming ineffective eventually.
