The Effects of Korean Safflower(Carthamus tinctorious L.) Seed Powder Supplementation Diet on Bone Metabolism Indices in Rats during the Recovery of Rib Fracture (한국산 홍화씨분말 보충식이의 급여가 골절된 흰쥐의 골대사지표에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Korean safflower(Carthamus. tinctorious L.) seed powder supplementation on bone metabolism during the recovery of rib-fracture induced by surgical operation in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats of 10 weeks old, weighing 370$\pm$5g, were divided into two groups after arrival : the control group(C group, AIN-76 semifurified diet) and safflower seed group(S group, AIN-76 semifurified diet+10% safflower seed powder). They were fed experimental diets for 12 days before the rib fracture operation and for 30 more days after the operation. A number 9 rib was fractured surgically and sham-operation was also performed. After the rib-fracture operation, rats were sacrificed on the 8th, 11th, 16th, 21st, and 30th day, respectively. The body weights were decreased on the 8th day after operation in both groups but recovered gradually thereafter. The fractured sections of the S group were more strongly adhered and more rapidly repaired than those of C group. Effects of safflower seed powder supplementation on indices of bone metabolism during the repairing of rib-fracture can be summarized as following. There were no differences between C and S group. In the levels of PTH and calcitonin, which regulate the concentration of plasma calcium. However, PTH level on the 8th day was significantly higher than that on the 16th day in control group. There were also no differences between groups or within groups in the levels of calcitonin. Osteocalcin levels, one of the bone-formation indices, were similar in two groups. Activities of total-ALP in plasma were highest at the 8th day in both groups and decreased thereafter, except on the 30th day in control group. The activities of bone-specific ALP that is directly related to bone calcification, showed higher levels in the S group than in the C group throughout the experimental period. They were significantly increased in the S group on the 11th, 16th, and 21st days. In comparisons of plasma calcium and phosphate levels, Ca levels were tended to be lower in the S group than in the C group and P levels showed the opposite trend. It seems that the fractured ribs were more rapidly repaired in rats supplemented with safflower seed powder than in control rats, possibly due to stimulation of bone calcification from increased activity of bone-specific ALP.   • In a passive-type PEMFC stack, axial fans operate to supply both oxidant and coolant to cathode side of the stack. It is possible to make a simple system because the passive-type PEMFC stack does not require additional cooling equipment. However, the performance of a cooling system in which water is used as a coolant is better than that of the air-cooling system. To ensure system reliability, it is essential to make cooling system effective by adopting an optimal stack design. In this study, a numerical investigation has been carried out to identify an optimum cooling strategy. Various channel configurations were applied to the test section. The passive-type PEMFC was tested by varying airflow rate distribution at the cathode side and external heat transfer coefficient of the stack. The best cooling performance was achieved when a channel with thick ribs was used, and the overheating at the center of the stack was reduced when a case in which airflow was concentrated at the middle of the stack was used.

  • The method to make glass is tried first thing in domestic study for glasses lens. Tg of glass KzFSl was measured by DSC experiment and press method of glass of meniscus shape was studied for minimize the cost. Tg was increased $483^{\circ}C$ to $501^{\circ}C$ with increasing heating rate $2^{\circ}C/min$ to $20^{\circ}C/min$. It shows Arrhenius temperature dependence and the activation energy of Tg is ${\Delta}E$=409 kJ/mole(4.25eV) by using Ozawa method and Tg is near $480^{\circ}C$. The melt of KzFSl powder was poured to concave cast stainless and pressed convex cast stainless. The quenched glass was slow cooled with cooling rate $0.25^{\circ}C/min$ in temperature range $520{\sim}430^{\circ}C$. The glass was made without strain. It has meniscus shape and same size to commercial glasses lens.

Treatment of Subclavian Artery Injury in Multiple Trauma Patients by Using an Endovascular Approach: Two Cases (다발성 외상환자에서 혈관계 접근을 통해 치료한 쇄골하동맥 손상 2례)

  • Introduction: Surgical treatment of subclavian artery (SA) injury is challenging because approaching the lesion directly and clamping the proximal artery is difficult. This can be overcome by using an endovascular technique. Case 1: A 37-year-old male was drawn into the concrete mixer truck. He had a right SA injury with multiple traumatic injuries: an open fracture of the right leg with posterior tibial artery (PTA) injury, a right hemothorax, and fractures of the clavicle, scapula, ribs, cervical spine and nasal bone. The injury severity score (ISS) was 27. Computed tomography (CT) showed a 30-mm-length thrombotic occlusion in the right SA, which was 15 mm distal to the vertebral artery (VA). A self-expandable stent($8mm{\times}40mm$ in size) was deployed through the right femoral artery while preserving VA flow, and the radial pulse was palpable after deployment. Other operations were performed sequentially. He had a viable right arm during a 13-month follow-up period. Case 2: A 25-year-old male was admitted to our hospital due to a motorcycle accident. The ISS was 34 because of a hemothorax and open fractures of the mandible and the left hand. Intraoperative angiography was done through a right femoral artery puncture. Contrast extravasation of the SA was detected just outside the left rib cage. After balloon catheter had been inflated just proximal to the bleeding site, direct surgical exploration was performed through infraclavicular skin incision. The transected SA was identified, and an interposition graft was performed using a saphenous vein graft. Other operations were performed sequentially. He had a viable left arm during a 15-month follow-up period. Conclusion: The challenge of repairing an SA injury can be overcome by using an endovascular approach.

  • Sector scanner which has a conical end is used to image through the intercostal space because heart is protected by the ribs. Cardiac data published all around the world were also obtained by sector scanner. Although scanners being used in every small animal practice and animal hospital at college in Korea include convex ape and linear type, linear type is not appropriate f3r cardiac scan because of a wide contact surface. The purpose of this study is to establish ultrasonographic images of normal cardiac structures by measuring shape, size of reflectable cardiac structure according to restraint position in scanning normal heart of the puppies with 6.5 MHz convex scanner(SonoAce 4500, Medison, Korea) used in our veterinary teaching hospital, Seoul national university. Seventeen male and female puppies considered having healthy hear by X-ray and clinical examination are used feom April to July 1994. Scanning point selection of probe head and the distinction of imaged cardiac structures were accomplished by necropsy and cardiac scanning performed through thoracotomy under general anesthesia. At 10 o'clock position of transducer(at an angle of 30$^{\circ}$ between imaginary line from elbow joint to 3rd sternum and probe head, 60$^{\circ}$ from body surface, 4th intercostal space of right thorax) with the marker of scanner toward the head of dogs right atrium, left atrium and left ventricle were observed in 2, 3, 4, 5 intercostal space(2cm from the sternum) of experimental dog positioned ventrodorsally under general anesthesia. Under these conditions, the numerical values of imaged diastolic hear are as follows : the distance from skin to apex(mean$\pm$S.D) 47.53$\pm$6.94mm, thickness of left ventricular wall 6.00$\pm$1.60mm, length of left ventricle 16.27$\pm$5.31mm, width of left ventricle 15,33$\pm$4.25mm, length of left atrium 12.33$\pm$3.82mm, width of left atrium 11. 33$\pm$3.94mm, length of right atrium 1.00$\pm$2.41mm, width of right atrium 11.21$\pm$2.76mm and the area of left ventricle 270.92$\pm$109.81mm$^2$, area of left atrium 98.00$\pm$41.08mm$^2$, area of right atrium 62.75$\pm$21.04mm$^2$.

Evaluation of the Storage Characteristics of Korean Soups for the Utilization of the Ready-Prepared Foodservice System (조리저장식(Ready-Prepared) 급식 시스템 이용을 위한 한식 탕반류의 저장 특성 평가)

  • To evaluate the storage characteristics of Korean soups for the utilization of the Ready-Prepared Foodservice System, Yukkaejang(spicy beef and vegetable soup), Sagol-woogeojitang (bone soup with young cabbage), Kalbitang(beef short-ribs soup) and Seolleongtang(beef and bone soup) were prepared and their physico-chemical characteristics were investigated according to storage time and temperature$(4^{\circ}\;to\;20^{\circ}C)$ through analysis of pH, TBA values, Hunter color values, microbial counts, and sensory evaluation. No significant difference in pH was shown among the 4 kinds of soup while TBA values were significantly increased with storage time and temperature. Hunter color values(L, a and b values) of the Korean soups were significantly increased except Yukkaejang. In the sensory evaluation, appearance, color, flavor, taste, texture and overall acceptability of the soups decreased significantly with increasing storage time and temperature. Through correlation analysis between quality factors of treatments stored at $4^{\circ}$, the overall acceptability in Yukkaejang and Seolleongtang showed significant positive correlation with appearance, color, flavor and texture. The evaluated shelf-life of all four Korean soups was within 3 days at $10^{\circ}$, suggesting that Korean soups are applicable to ready-prepared foodservice system.

Embryotoxic effects of DA-125, a new anthracycline anticancer agent, in rats (새로운 안트라사이클린계 항암제 DA-125의 랫트에 있어서 태자독성효과)

  • DA-125 is a new anthracycline antitumor antibiotic, which is derived from adriamycin. The potential of DA-125 to induce embryotoxicity was evaluated in the Sprague-Dawley rats. One hundred twenty naturally mated SD rats(sperm in vaginal lavage=day 0) were distributed among three treated groups and a control group. DA-125 was administered intravenously at dose levels of 0. 0.1, 0.3 and 1.0mg/ kg/day. Dams were treated from day 7 to 17 of gestation and were subjected to the caesarean section on day 20. At 1 mg/kg, reduced food intake, reduced body weight and decreased weight of spleen were observed in dams. An increase in the resorption rate and a reduction in the fetal weight were also found. In addition, various types of external, visceral and skeletal malformations occurred at an incidence of 11.9, 41.8 and 14.5%, respectively. Characteristic malformations include exencephalia, gastroschisis, cleft lip, dilatation of lateral and 3rd ventricle, fused ribs, among others. There were no signs of maternal toxicity or embryotoxicity at 0.1 and 0.3mg/kg. The results show that the test agent DA-125 is embryotoxic at maternally subtoxic dose in rats.

Treatment of Multiple Rib Fracture and Flail Chest with Judet's Strut-105 Case REport- (다발성 늑골골절 및 Flail Chest 환자에서 Judet's strut를 이용한 수술적 고정술 105례)

  • There were 105 patients with multiple rib fracture or flail chest who had underwent surgical rib fixation using judet's strut from Aug. 1989 to Aug. 1995. They were 86 men and 19 women, and the age distribution was from 17 to 77(mean $48\pm12).$ The most common cause of accident was a traffic accident(81%), The mean number of rib fracture was 5.5 and the distribution of patient were flail chest(72, 64.7%), severe displaced rib Fracture(18, 17.1%), traumatic chest wall deformity(10, 95%) and others(5, 4.7%). The operative mortality was 1 patient(0.96%) and the incidence of postoperative complication were 13 patients(12.3%). The duration of perioperative artificial ventilator therapy was $90.5\pm22.6$ hours. Our method allowed shorter duration of an artificial ventiatin and decreased a functional sequelae. We find this technique to be better than previously published methods, since it provides better stabilization and immobilization of he ribs and thus obviates the need for artificial ventilation and prevents post-traumatic chest deformity.

Low Temperature Structural Tests of a Composite Wing with Room Temperature-Curing Adhesive Bond (상온접합 본딩이 있는 복합재 날개의 저온 구조시험)

  • This paper presents low temperature structural tests of a UAV wing which has room temperature-curing adhesive bond. The wing structure is made of carbon fiber reinforced composites, and the skins are bonded to the inner structures (such as ribs and spars) using room temperature-curing adhesive bond. Also, to verify damage tolerance design of the wing structure, barely visible impact damages are intentionally created in the critical areas. The attachment fittings of the wing are fixed in a specially designed chamber which can simulate the low temperature environments of the operating altitudes. The test load is applied by hydraulic actuators which are placed outside the chamber. The structural tests consist of strain survey tests and a durability test for 1-life fatigue load spectrum. During the tests, strains of major parts are measured by strain gauges and FBG sensors. The change of the initial impact damages is also monitored using piezoelectric sensors. The 1-life damage tolerance of the composite structure is verified by the structural tests under the simulated environments.

Assessment of Nutrient Content for Providing Nutrition Information of Dishes in Restaurant and Food Service Institutions -About Korean dishes - (외식의 영양정보 제공을 위한 영양 평가 -한식을 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of the present study is to assess nutrient content for providing nutrition information such as nutrition labeling on Korean dishes in restaurant and food service institutions. The content of nutrients was calculated in recipies used to prepare dishes which has been frequently consumed in such four groups as the literature, foodservice institutions of industries, restaurants, and households. The numbers of dishes surveyed were 15. Total numbers of literture used for recipies analysis are 20. Recipies used in foodservice institutions of industries were abstracted from the journal 'Guk-Min Young-Yang' published in Korea dietetic association and obtained with the help of dietitians working in those institutions. Also, recipies has been using in restaurants were given from the Korea restaurant association. Recipies in households was calculated from the secondary analysis of the Korean National Nutrition Survey. Nutrient content from foods except steamed rice and side dishes in each dish was calculated using data of Korean food composition table published. The content of energy and protein in 'Gal-bi tang' (beef-rib soup) were highest in recipes used at restaurants, vitamin C in recipes of food service institutions of industries due to the generous use of meats and vegetables than other recipies. 'Doen-jang chigae' (soybean paste stew) showed the lowest content of energy in results analyzing recipes presented on the literature and varied protein level by four groups for difference of protein source used. The content of energy in 'Gop-chang jeongol' (small intestines stew) is 150 kcal more than 'Soegogi jeongol' (beef stew) in general. The energy level of 'Daeji-galbi' jim (braised pork ribs) and 'Dak jim' (braised chicken) turned out to be the highest in recipies presented on literature. Variation of each nutrient content including energy and protein was relatively high, since some of foods used in 'Pibimbab' (mixed rice) varied with four groups. Amounts of energy and protein in 'Naeng-myeun' (cold noodles) is the highest in recipies of foodservice institution of industries because much amounts of noodle and meats were used comparing to other groups. The average content of energy in 'Pulgogi' (grilled meat with sauce) was 50% to Korea recommended amounts of one meal, 833.3 kcal. Content of vitamin $B_1$ in 'Jeuk pyeunuk' (boiled pork), which is made of pork meat, was higher than other dishes. The ingredients of frequently consumed Korean dishes were highly variable among the four groups which inevitably results in variation of nutrient content in each dishes. The high variation of nutrient content in each dish according to study requires careful collecting of the large number of recipies in presenting representative nutrient content for nutrition labeling on dishes in restaurant and food service institutions effectively.
