  • In orthotropic steel decks, it is likely to have defects due to fatigue damages because most of structural joints(the connection of longitudinal rib and transverse rib, the connection of deck plate and longitudinal rib) are connected by welds. However. orthotropic steel decks have many advantages. such as light weight and reduction of construction time. in comparison with concrete decks. Therefore. they are mostly used in long-span bridges and urban highway bridges. This study consists of the cause identication of fatigue damage and the suggestion of rational thickness on deck plate about the connection of deck plate and longitudinal rib. The results are as follows: fatigue damage cause at the connection of deck plate and longitudinal rib is local deformation in deck plate. And, rational thickness of deck plate is 16mm thickness.

  • A finite element analysis study was performed to investigate the behavior and strength of a Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint stiffened with Rib-plate, Since The strength of plate-Circular Section joint is reduced by joint of stress and local plastic deformation which is caused by wall moment, rib plates are attached to the upper and lower Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint for redistribution of stress. The behaviors of joints stiffened with Rib-plate according to shape of rib and reinforcing method, etc are different from those of joints which is not stiffened. However, the criterion of hollow structural section was limited on some parts. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the behavior and structural capacity of Plate-Circular Hollow Section joints stiffened with Rib-plate and compare the Finite element analysis with the Design Equation. Finally, this study proposes the reasonable ultimate strength formula through the comparisons with other design guide.

  • Recently, Orthotropic steel deck bridges, which have long span decks, have been regarded as one of economical as well as durable bridge types. However, Orthotropic steel deck bridge is used by a lot of welding, which may cause welding defect and deformation of connections. This kind of system happens some damages by the fatigue cracks of welding. The cross-connection of longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the weakest point because of the fatigue. The secondary stresses which are from the out-plane deformation of transversal rib and the torsion of longitudinal rib make the topical stress concentration phenomenon. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that a study for the installing of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This study with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical system of Bulkhead Plate and the cross-connection area of longitudinal and transversal rib

  • Orthotropic steel deck bridge has much advantages such as the light deadweight, so the construction of orthotropic steel deck is profitable for the long-span bridges Although the system has a lot of merits, it happens some damages by the traffic density and the fatigue cracks of welding. The cross-connection of longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the weakest at the fatigue.   • More than a century ago, the first scientific report was published about fracture fixation with plates. During the 1950's, open reduction and plate fixation for fractures were standardized by the founders of Arbeitsgemeinschaft $f{\ddot{u}}r$ osteosynthesefragen/Association for the Study of Internal Fixation. Since the introduction of plate fixation for fractures, several plates and screws have been developed, all with their own characteristics. To accomplice more fracture stability, it was thought the bigger the plate, the better. The counter side was a compromised blood supply of the bone, often resulting in bone necrosis and ultimately delayed or non-union. With the search and development of new materials and techniques for fracture fixation, less invasive procedures have become increasingly popular. This resulted in the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique for fracture fixation. With the MIPO technique, procedures could be performed with smaller incisions and thus with less soft tissue damage and a better preserved blood supply. The last 5 years rib fixation has become increasingly popular, rising evidence has becomeavailable suggesting that surgical rib fixation improves outcome of patients with a flail chest or isolated rib fractures. Many surgical approaches for rib fixation have been described in the old literature, however, most of these techniques are obscure nowadays. Currently mostly large incisions with considerable surgical insult are used to stabilize rib fractures. We think that MIPO deserves a place in the surgical treatment of rib fractures. We present the aspects of diagnosis, preoperative planning and operative techniques in regard to MIPO rib fixation.

  • In order to reduce resultant stress of the connection detail of longitudinal and rib and floor beam, in this study, the parameter studies for the reinforcement details as the bulk head and the vertical rib were preformed with FE analysis. As the result, it was shown that reinforcement detail with the bulk head plate in longitudinal rig reduced generally the principal stress at the connection detail, but the stress concentration of the weld toe parts occurring fatigue crack increased. However, it was known that the reinforcement detail with the vertical rib in the rib is more effective than the bulk head plate of the reduction stress concentration in the weld toe parts.

  • This study is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics the for a round turbulent jet impinging on the flat plate with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made fur the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 10, and the rib type [height ($d_1$) 2mm, pitch (p) from 12 to 36mm]. It was found that for $L/d{\ge}6$ the average Nusselt numbers on the flat plate with rib type C ($p/d_1=16$) are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by flow separation, recirculation and reattachment on the wall surface.

  • In this paper, the optimum shape and arrangement of ribs in the channel of a plate heat exchanger are studied. The following dimensionless geometric parameters of ribs are selected as design variables: rib height ($H_R$), angle of attack ($\beta$), rib pitch ($P_R$), rib distance (L) and aspect ratio of rib (AR). The optimization is performed by minimizing the objective function consisting of the Nusselt number and the friction factor. The optimal values of design variables are as follows: $H_R$=0.263, $\beta$=0.290, $P_R$=3.142, L: 3.954, AR=0.342. The pressure drop and the heat transfer of the optimum model, compared to those of the reference model, are increased by 15.1% and 41.6%, respectively.

A Study on the New Type Rib of Steel Deck Plates (새로운 형태의 강바닥판 리브에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an economic new type rib by applying plate stiffening methods of the corrugated plate and the honey-comb sandwich panel to the steel deck plate and comparing the new type rib with existing open and closed ribs. The trapezoidal corrugated type, ㄹ type, honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are considered as new type ribs and the moment and the steel volume are compared with that of open ribs and closed ribs. The results shows that the honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are good in aspects of economic feasibility and the ㅁ type is better than the honey-comb type. To make the ㅁ type rib applicable to the steel deck plate, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study are performed and the system to select the proper section under the particular stress condition is established. The closed rib of real bridges is compared with the ㅁ type rib of the proposed system and it is known that the new type rib is more economic. Therefore, more economic steel deck plates can be achieved by using the system proposed in this study for the plate stiffened with the new ㅁ type rib.
