The purpose of this study makes a retrofit and rehabilitation practice trough the analysis and the improvement for the underlying problem of current retrofit and rehabilitation methods. Therefore, the deterioration process, the damage cause, the condition classification, the fatigue mechanism and the applied quantity of strengthening methods for slab bridge decks were analysed. Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniqures that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, a back-propagation neural network model for estimating a management on existing slab bridge decks from damage cause, damage type, and integrity assessment at the initial stsge is need. The training and testing of the network were based on a database of 36. Four different network models werw used to study the ability of the neural network to predict the desirable output of increasing degree of accuracy. The neural networks is trained by modifying the weights of the neurons in response to the errors between the actual output values and the target output value. Training was done iteratively until the average sum squared errors over all the training patterms were minimized. This generally occurred after about 5,000 cycles of training.
Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars is a major concern for ocean engineers when reinforced concrete structures are exposed to marine environments. Evaluating the degree of corrosion and corrosion-induced defects is extremely necessary to pursue a proper retrofit or rehabilitation plan for reinforced concrete structures. A promising inspection should be carried out for the evaluation, otherwise the retrofit or rehabilitation process would be useless. Nowadays, ultrasonic guided wave-based inspection techniques become quite promising for the inspection, mainly because of their long-range propagation capability and their sensitivity to different types of defects or conditions. Evaluating haw the guided waves response to the different types of defects or conditions is quite challenging and important. This study shows how surface conditions of reinforcing bars and a corrosion-induced defect, separation, affect guided wave propagation in reinforced concrete. Experiments and associated signal analysis show the sensitivity of guided waves to the surface conditions, as well as the amounts of separation at the interface between. concrete and steel bar.
The Retrofit Yield Spectrum (RYS) is a new spectrum-based device that relates seismic demand of a retrofitted structure with the fundamental design parameters of the retrofit. This is obtained from superposition of Yield Point Spectra with design charts that summarize in pertinent spectrum-compatible coordinates the attributes of a number of alternative retrofit scenarios. Therefore, once the requirements for upgrading a given structure have been determined, the RYS enable direct insight of the sensitivity of the seismic response of the upgraded structure to the preliminary design decisions made while establishing the retrofit plan. By virtue of their spectrum-based origin, RYS are derived with reference to a single mode of structural vibration; a primary objective is to control the contribution of this mode in the retrofit design so as to produce a desirable distribution of damage at the ultimate limit state by removing soft storey formations and engaging the maximum number of structural members in deformation, in response to the input motion. Calculations are performed with reference to the yield-point, where secant stiffness is proportional to the flexural strength of reinforced concrete members. Derivation and use of the Retrofit Yield Spectra (RYS) refers to the seismic demand expressed either in terms of spectral acceleration, spectral displacement or interstory drift, at yield of the first storey. A reinforced concrete building that has been tested in full scale to a sequence of simulated earthquake excitations is used in the paper as a demonstration case study to examine the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
As housing supply ratio has become over 100%, the strategic vision of government's policies has been changed from new construction to maintenance and regeneration of old architectural-structures. This fact has brought a light on the reconstruction and remodeling industries and a need for retrofit and rehabilitation techniques of existing foundation. Various methods of foundation for architectural-structures do exist. Among them, micropiling technologies are increasingly applied in foundation rehabilitation and seismic retrofitting projects. Micropiling techniques provide environmental-friendly methods for minimizing disturbance to adjacent structures, ground, and the environment. The installation is possible in restrictive area and general ground conditions. The fact that the installation procedures cause minimal vibration and noise and require very low ceiling height makes the micropiling methods to be commonly used for underpin existing structures. Specialized drilling equipment is often required to install the micropiles for existing basement facilities. This paper presents a case study in which micropiles were constructed to support a superstructure for vertical extension of existing elevator core and provide accessibility to underground parking lot. It is intended to become useful reference for the similar remodeling project.
A research on the performance of retrofit anchors was conducted using adhesives for rehabilitation. From the pull-out tests of the chemical anchors, the effect of the hole diameter, spacer, temperature, moisture, embedment depth, and aging time were investigated. The spacer did not directly increased the pull-out load hilt increased post-yielding resistance therefore the ductility of the retrofit anchors. When the hole was cleaned and dried after the immersion, the pull-out load was greatly increased compared to the wet hole. A design equation was unposed depending on the embedment depth of the anchor bolt.
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the contribution of RCC strip in the in-filled RC frames. In this research, two frames were tested to study the behavior of retrofitted RC frame under cyclic loading. In the two frame, one was three bay four storey R.C frame with central bay brick infill with RCC strip in-between brick layers and the other was retrofitted frame with same stiffened brick work. Effective rehabilitation is required some times to strengthened the RC frames. Ferrocement concrete strengthening was used to retrofit the frame after the frame was partially collapsed. The main effects of the frames were investigated in terms of displacement, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Diagonal cracks in the infill bays were entirely eliminated by introducing two monolithic RCC strips. Thus more stability of the frame was obtained by providing RCC strips in the infill bays. Load carrying capacity of the frame was increased by enlarging the section in the retrofitted area.
This paper deals with steel braced frame as increasing the lateral strength and ductility in order to seismic retrofit of existing buildings and discusses the designing criteria and calculation method of retrofitted buildings. The addition of steel braced frame can be effective for increasing the lateral strength and ductility of existing buildings. However, There is a problem in utilizing this method. It is the approach to provide an adequate connection between the existing RC frame and the installed steel braced frame, because global strength by failure mode(three type) depends on detail of connection and strength of existing RC frame. So, the designer must be confirmed if it satisfies the required performance or not. Failure mode of type I is the most appropriate for increasing the lateral strength and ductility. Seismic performance evaluation and strength calculation of seismic retrofit are performed by guideline by KISTEC(Korea Infrastructure Safety & Technology)'s "seismic performance evaluation and rehabilitation of existing buildings" and Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association. Buildings are modeled and non-linear pushover analysis are performed using MIDAS program.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the flexural rehabilitation of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by the steel plate. Main test parameters were the existence and the magnitude of the pre-loading at the flexural of rehabilitation and the tensile reinforcement ratio of the specimens. Seven beam specimens were tested to investigate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation method. Test results showed that the ultimate load capacities of the pre-loaded specimens were higher than not-pre-loaded specimens at the rehabilitation. The cause of the pharameter was analyzed if is suggested that the bond failure between the concrete and the strengthening steel plate occured prior to the yielding of the tension reinforcement. The member flexural stiffnesses, were similar regardless of the load conditions at retrofit and failure modes showed brittle aspect caused by rip-off failure.
This paper represents results of an effort to seismically rehabilitate a 12-story nonductile reinforced concrete frame building. The frame located in the most severe seismic area, zone 4, is assumed to be designed and detailed for gravity load requirements only. Both pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses are carried out to determine strength, deformation capacity and the vulnerability of the building. The analysis indicates a drift concentration at the $1^{st}$ floor level due to inadequate strength and ductility capacity of the ground floor columns. The capacity curve of the structure, when superimposed on the average demand response spectrum for the ensemble of scaled earthquakes indicates that the structure is extremely weak and requires a major retrofit. The retrofit of the building is attempted using viscoelastic (VE) dampers. The dampers at each floor level are sized in order to reduce the elastic story drift ratios to within 1%. It is found that this requires substantially large dampers that are not practically feasible. With practical size dampers, the analyses of the viscoelastically damped building indicates that the damper sizes provided are not sufficient enough to remove the biased response and drift concentration of the building. The results indicate that VE-dampers alone are not sufficient to rehabilitate such a concrete frame. Concrete buildings, in general, being stiffer require larger dampers. The second rehabilitation strategy uses concrete shearwalls. Shearwalls increased stiffness and strength of the building, which resulted in reducing the drift significantly. The effectiveness of VE-dampers in conjunction with stiff shearwalls was also studied. Considering the economy and effectiveness, it is concluded that shearwalls were the most feasible solution for seismic rehabilitation of such buildings.
