  • For maintaining high visibility of lane, the high refractive index glass beads with excellent retro-reflectivity are usually applied on the road marking paint. The retro-reflectivity standard of general road marking is different in each country; it is defined as $240mcd/m^2{\cdot}lux$ based on white light in Korea and $250{\sim}300mcd/m^2{\cdot}lux$ in developed countries. In this paper, the recent trends on the manufacturing technology of glass beads suitable for autonomous driving age as well as the road marking regulations has been reviewed. Also, in preparation for the commercialization of autonomous vehicles in the future, the necessity of raising the standard value and improving the glass bead properties were proposed.

  • Road signs are important facilities in terms of providing information to driver, they are helpful for driver's judgment as deliver it's own information. However if there is occurrence dew on the road sign because of the change of temperature and humidity, it can be cause of accidents. Therefore it is necessary to develop anti-dew or dew resistance technology. In this research the anti-dew technologies such as insulation road sign and anti-dew film were compared with normal road sign, and the effectiveness analysis was conducted for each alternatives. The quantity of dew on the road sign was check using ANOVA and Tukey HSD and the relation between the retro-reflectivity and quantity of dew on the sign was check using Pearson correlation coefficient. As a result, the sample of anti-dew film attached road sign showed lesser quantity of dew compared with normal road sign. After 90 seconds, the difference of dew quantity for anti-dew film and insulation road sign showed statistically significant result. The relation of between quantity of dew and retro-reflectivity was inverse correlation. As a result, when analyzed the quantity of dew and retro-reflectivity a point of view anti-dew effectiveness, the anti-dew film and insulation road sign showed meaningful result.

  • PURPOSES : This study analyzed the regional dew possibility in road sign using meteorological data. METHODS : Four years of meteorological data such as temperature, humidity, dew point, wind velocity were collected and analyzed. As a result of literature review, dew was frequent in large diurnal range, high humidity and weak wind. So, dew possibility was analyzed by (temperature-dew point ${\leq}1^{\circ}C$ and wind velocity ${\leq}$ 1.5m/s). RESULTS : The possibility was analyzed for each meteorological observation point and the point of Suncheon and Bonghwa were selected as the most likely points of dew in road sign. The area of East Coast, Kyungbuk and Kyungnam were relatively low potential. CONCLUSIONS : Alternative with high effect of preventing dew should be selected in high possibility dew area despite of low economics.

  • PURPOSES : This research is to analyze the influence in terms of misreading rate and legibility time for drivers when condensation occurs on the road signs. METHODS : In this research, the dew occurred road signs provided to drivers to measure legibility time and misreading rate to compare with normal road sign. In order to identify the difference of legibility time between normal road sign and dew occurred road sign, the T-test and ANOVA test were used. And the vision system was used to recognize the region of dew occurrence on the road sign, then the brightness of dew occurrence region on the road sign was changed to check the misreading rate of drivers according to the change rate of brightness. RESULTS : The legibility times were measured 2.65s for normal road sign and 4.08s for dew occurrence road sign and misreading rates were measured 2.8% for normal road sign, 21.7% for dew occurrence road sign.

  • This paper presents a multiple face detector based on a robust pupil detection technique. The pupil detector uses active illumination that exploits the retro-reflectivity property of eyes to facilitate detection. The detection range of this method is appropriate for interactive desktop and kiosk applications. Once the location of the pupil candidates are computed, the candidates are filtered and grouped into pairs that correspond to faces using heuristic rules. To demonstrate the robustness of the face detection technique, a dual mode face tracker was developed, which is initialized with the most salient detected face. Recursive estimators are used to guarantee the stability of the process and combine the measurements from the multi-face detector and a feature correlation tracker. The estimated position of the face is used to control a pan-tilt servo mechanism in real-time, that moves the camera to keep the tracked face always centered in the image.

  • PURPOSES : Visibility of lanes on the road improves as retro-reflectivity rises. This helps reduce traffic accidents at nighttime or in bad weather. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of improved visibility on reduction of traffic accidents when the color of the lane in the median of the highway was changed from yellow to white. METHODS : In order to evaluate the accident reduction effect of the white left shoulder line, Hauer (1997)'s Comparison-Group method was chosen as an analysis methodology. The JungBu-2 highway, which is equipped with the white left shoulder line and is in trial operation, was chosen as a target for analysis. Data of accidents for 10 months before and after installation was collected and analyzed. In addition to the number of accidents, the types of accidents were classified into nighttime accidents, accidents in bad weather, and median collisions. The accident reduction effect of improved visibility of lanes was analyzed. RESULTS : The analysis' finding showed that installation of the white left shoulder line decreased the number of accidents by 28%. Moreover, improvement in visibility was effective in reducing nighttime accidents by 67.63%, accidents in bad weather by 55.19%, and median collisions by 48.55%. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the analysis' results in this study, it was concluded that white left shoulder line on the freeway contributed to reduce traffic accidents, especially nighttime accidents, accidents in bad weather, and median collisions.

  • The performance of road markings is classified into the visibility at daytime, night time, wet condition and rainy conditions. The objective of this study is to obtain the driving safety of drivers under conditions of unstable weather condition such as the rain. The visibility of road markings is closely related to the preview time and detection distances and the ways to improve road marking materials and increase the dry retroreflectivity and wet retroreflectivity, which are the measures of daytime and nighttime visibility is researched to decrease the traffic accidents. For this purpose, Road marking glass beads with the refraction rate of 1.5 and 2.2 are introduced to raise the retroreflectivity. After investigating the minimum threshold retroreflectivity and Install Minimum retroreflectivity at home and abroad, minimum control values for the roadmarking visibility and improvement of nightime rainy retroreflectivity are suggested by physical properties and retroreflectivity experiments.

  • A decrease in the retro-reflectivity of glass-bead-covered road paint because of a rainwater film significantly reduces the visibility of drivers at night, and has been considered as a critical cause of traffic accidents. For enhanced visibility, the microencapsulation of hydrophobically modified $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$,$Dy^{3+}$ phosphorescent phosphor was carried out via suspension polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The effects of surface modification agent and radical initiator types, loading amount of phosphorescent phosphor, and microcapsule size on the phosphor content ($W_{TGA}$) in the luminous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were investigated by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). It was found that the $W_{TGA}$ value was ranged from 7 wt% to 81 wt%, which suggests suspension polymerization is suitable for the preparation of luminous microcapsules with a wide range of phosphor content. At a lower loading amount of phosphor, the $W_{TGA}$ value obviously increased as the microcapsule size decreased; however, the $W_{TGA}$ values with a higher loading amount of phosphor were less affected by the microcapsule size. The luminous microcapsules with the size range of $425{\sim}710{\mu}m$ were collected and tested as a luminous road lanes. It was found that luminance intensities of the microcapsule-coated plates remained higher than $300mcd/m^2$ for up to 100 s in darkness after 20 min of light emitting diode lamp irradiation. The results suggest that the luminous microcapsules can be a candidate for the replacement of glass beads for enhanced visibility of drivers.
