The paper describes the application areas of the hypertext and the relevance of hypertext principles to the information retrieval system. As to the techniques of the hypertext information retrieval the various navigation method including a guided tour, a history list, a browser, a book-mark, etc. are discussed. The query system is considered as the other technique to be integrated into the hypertext system for the enhancement of the interactive function of the information retrieval. Based on the theoretical background, a conceptual model of hypertext information retrieval system was constructed using GUIDE which was developed by P.J. Brown of Kent University. 16 bibliographic records from LISA of 1991(June) were used for the illustration of the basic operation of the system. Though the study could not reach the implementation level due to the absolute constraints of the time and experimental environments, further efforts will continue to develop a prototype system of a hypertext information retrieval. A few conclusions can be derived from the study : (1) The integration of the hypertext into the information retrieval system can be justified by permitting the end-users to have much stronger and more flexible interaction with the system. (2) The more the degree of the sofistication of the existing information retrieval system is the more the possibility of the development of an effective and user-oriented information retrieval system will be greater by integrating guide as a front end system to the underlying software. (3) The deep knowledge about the functions of information retrieval which can be enhanced by the hypertext could be acquired by the information retrieval specialists.

In this paper, we report our recent work on a indexing and retrieval system of broadcast news using audio content analysis. Key issues addressed in this work are two major parts of the audio indexing system: anchorperson detection based on audio segmentation, and phone-based spoken document retrieval, developed in the framework of the emerging MPEG-7 standard. Experiments are conducted on a database of Britisch broadcast news videos. We discuss the development of the retrieval system, and the evaluation of each part and the retrieval system.

In this thesis, we propose a semantics-based video retrieval system which supports semantics-retrieval for various users of massive video data. Proposed system automatically processes the extraction of contents information which video data has and retrieval process using agent which integrate annotation-based retrieval and feature-based retrieval. From experiment, the designed and implemented system shows increase of recall rate and precision rate for video data scene retrieval in performance assessment.

A new query method, called query by visual keys, is proposed to aim easy operation and efficient region-based image retrieval (RBIR). Visual keys are constructed from representative regions/subimages in a given image database, and the database is indexed with visual keys. A system on PC is presented, where text retrieval techniques are applied to the image retrieval with visual keys. Experimental results show that one retrieval is done within 4ms and that the proposed system achieves the comparable retrieval precision (with user-friendly operation and low computational cost) to conventional region based image retrieval systems

Recently, to overcome the limit of keyword based retrieval system, the study based structured document has been studied. But it is hard for structured retrieval system to adapt a real service, in this paper, we propose a method of retrieval mechanism for the fulltext of XML documents. We explain DTD of XML based report, extracting navigation information and planing to adapt the retrieval system for article retrieval. Using the fulttext retrieval scheme, suggested system can be an alternative plan of professional structured based retrieval system.

In this paper, we design and implement a XML document retrieval system to support structure-based retrieval using the BRS/Search system that is a commercial search engine, The implemented system in this paper represents the logical structure of XML documents as the directory structure of the Unix file system. In addition, we define the database schema of BRS/Search system to store documents, We also implement a ETID extractor, a structure information extractor, a storage manager and a query processor additionally to support content retrieval, structure retrieval, mixed retrieval and attribute retrieval in the BRS/Search system.

This paper proposes ACA (Adaptive Component Analysis) as a method for feature extraction and analysis of the content-based image retrieval system. For satisfactory retrieval, the features extracted from images should be appropriately applied according to the image domains and for this, retrieval measurement is proposed in this study. Retrieval measurement is a standard indicating how important the value of a relevant feature is to image retrieval. ACA is a middle stage for content-based image retrieval and it purposes to improve the retrieval speed and performance.

This study examines the retrieval efficiency of the FRBR-based bibliographic retrieval system. To do this, we built two experimental retrieval systems(a FRBR-based system constructed through FRBRizing algorithms and an OPAC-based retrieval system) using 387 music materials coded in a KORMARC format. Next, we set up six hypotheses and compared these two systems in terms of recall, precision, and retrieval time using 28 participants and a questionnaire with 12 queries. The results show that the average recall value of the FRBR-based system Is higher than that of the OPAC system regardless of query types and the average precision and retrieval time values of manifestation queries of the OPAC system is more efficient that those of the FRBR-based system. This study results can be used to customize digital library interfaces as well as to improve the retrieval efficiency of the bibliographic retrieval system.

In attempting to respond to boolean retrieval system's limitations, this paper presents the design of a retrieval system using fuzzy logic. The fuzzy retrieval system introduces the weights of terms in the documents and in the query and makes use of them to determine how much relevant a document is to the given query. After comparing and analyzing the previous researches, an effective model of the fuzzy retrieval system is suggested and the performance of the system is evaluated through actual examples.
