  • The intricacies of web development have orchestrated a paradigm shift in academic libraries. The study explored literature on the status of automation of academic libraries and web development in Nigeria. It was established that the functions of library management software are abysmally under-utilized in academic libraries in Nigeria, thus, progression of automation projects remain a swinging pendulum. The paper, therefore, recommends that librarians should acquire the relevant training and plan strategically for all automation projects aimed at incorporating the intricacies of the web and ICTs into library services to fully utilize the functions of the library management systems in line with web developmental stages, thus, be able to compete globally.

  • Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are one of the most frequently used artificial intelligence techniques. Among CNN-based applications, small and timing-sensitive applications have emerged, which must be reliable to prevent severe accidents. However, as the small and timing-sensitive systems do not have sufficient system resources, they do not possess proper error protection schemes. In this paper, we propose MATE, which is a low-cost CNN weight error correction technique. Based on the observation that all mantissa bits are not closely related to the accuracy, MATE replaces some mantissa bits in the weight with error correction codes. Therefore, MATE can provide high data protection without requiring additional memory space or modifying the memory architecture. The experimental results demonstrate that MATE retains nearly the same accuracy as the ideal error-free case on erroneous DRAM and has approximately 60% accuracy, even with extremely high bit error rates.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest methods to improve in-home service quality through service evaluation by long-term care workers. To achieve this objective, general characteristics of 223 long-term care workers, evaluation of service and agency, and retraining needs have been surveyed. An assessment of the survey results have resulted in the following conclusions. Though long-term care workers are not uneducated, the majority face unstable employment. And the content of supervision hoped for in producing improved long-term care services has been found to be based on the service-user's relationships. Moreover, among topics needing to be addressed for retraining, much attention has been shown for understanding of the elderly and their families, health care knowledge about geriatric diseases, and counseling techniques directed towards the affected person and their family. Findings from the research are as follow: enhancing the quality of long-term care requires a structural reassessment; upgrading the quality of care agencies requires the improvement of methods used to raise awareness of users and their guardians and the expansion of opportunities for education programs for professionalism.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the role orientation that librarians are expected to carry during their career-life. More specifically, this study examined the pattern of librarians subjectivism related to attitude, belief, and confidence. Q questions were made of 36 items, including personal value system and role attitude. P sample included 23 librarians. Data were collected for 8 days (from April 15, 2005 to April 22, 2005). Analyses showed the following results. First, librarians role orientations were classified into 3 types: user-centered orientation, organization-centered orientation, and expertise-centered orientation. (1) The first type librarians were interested in having good relationships with users, while emphasizing the importance of providing good services to the users. (2) The second type of librarians were concerned with social function of the library, while placing highlight on their roles as organizational members. Among them, achievement evaluation was regarded as an important indicator of personal success. They were interested in having stable organizational culture, as well as economic growth of libraries. This orientation was dominant among married members. (3) The third type of librarians focused on librarians role implementation and professional achievement. They showed interest not only in the improvement of librarians creativity and the growth of expertises, but also the expansion of retraining opportunities. This orientation was conspicuous among female librarians. Second, several commonalities and differences were consistently found among librarians. The first type was interested in user-centered orientation(user contact, need satisfaction, self dignity, etc.). The second type was interested in organization-centered orientation(creativity, expertise growth, retraining opportunity, professional achievement. self-respect, etc.).

  • Management of the child with Attention-Deficit Hyperativity Disorder(ADHD) reguires a comprehensive approach of cognitive-behavioral, educational, and pharmacological interventions. Establishing the valid diagnosis is the first step of management. After the diagnosis is made, the clinician must then interpret the diagnosis and its impliations to the child, parents, and teachers. The pharmacotherapy is most effeceive, and the CNS stimulants (methylphenidate) is drug of choice. Although generally not as effective as stimulants, triacyclic antidepressants, clonidine, antipsychotics offer the alternatives to stimulants therapy. Additional treatments, including psychotherapy, cogntive-behavioral approach, educational infervention, parental counseling are also essential in managing the child with ADHD. Finally, controversial approaches-diet therapy, mineral therapy, hypoglycemia, megavitamin therapy, refined sugars, neurophysiological retraining approaches are reviewed.

  • The objective of this study is to develop education programs for cultivating smart aquaculture experts through a education demand survey of industries, high school students, university (graduate) students and field workers. The industry demand analysis was conducted as an in-depth interview on representives from seven companies. Education demand surveys were conducted on 96 students and field workers in the Jeonnam region. Results on the demand survey were analyzed using frequency analysis and cross-analysis. The company representatives responded that they want to participated in internship and retraining programs to proactively secure manpowers with convergence capabilities about smart aquaculture. Seven companies preferred manpowers with basic competencies on ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) or aquaculture. The most respondents in the demand survey want to participate in the education program for experience on advanced technology, self-development and enhancement of work capability. On the other hand, some respondents said that the education is time-consuming and that the education program does not fit their level. Thus, the education program should be developed in a way to minimize the spatial and temporal limitations of education targets and to improve understanding of non-majors by reflecting the demands of human resources in the industrial field.

  • The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model has been known as one of the most effective theories for automatic ship berthing, as it has learning ability and mimics the actions of the human brain when performing the stages of ship berthing. However, existing ANN controllers can only bring a ship into a berth in a certain port, where the inputs of the ANN are the same as those of the teaching data. This means that those ANN controllers must be retrained when the ship arrives to a new port, which is time-consuming and costly. In this research, by using the head-up coordinate system, which includes the relative bearing and distance from the ship to the berth, a novel ANN controller is proposed to automatically control the ship into the berth in different ports without retraining the ANN structure. Numerical simulations were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller. First, teaching data were created in the original port to train the neural network; then, the controller was tested for automatic berthing in other ports, where the initial conditions of the inputs in the head-up coordinate system were similar to those of the teaching data in the original port. The results showed that the proposed controller has good performance for ship berthing in ports.

  • Outliers, unexpected extraordinary observations that look discordant from most observation in a data set are commonplace in various kinds of data analysis. Since the effect of outliers on model identification could be serious, the aim of this paper is to present some ways of handling outliers in given data set and to specify a model in the presence of outliers. A procedure based on neural network which identifies outliers, removes their effects, and specifies a model for the underlying process is proposed. In contrast with traditional parametric methods requiring to estimate the model's structure and parameters before detecting outliers, the proposed procedure is a nonparametric method without the estimation of model's structure and parameters before handling outliers and could be applied for real problems in the presence of outliers. The proposed methodology is performed as followings. Firstly, outliers are detected and the detected outliers replace the prediction values using outliers detection neural network. The data set removing the effect of outliers is retraining using neural network. Therefore the effects of outliers are removed and the modeling precision can be improved. Experimental results show that the proposed method is suitable for predicting data set in the presence of outliers.

  • The purpose of this study is to project the supply and demand for nurses till the year 2012 and to make recommendations for establishment of proper policies regarding them. To predict the supply of nurses. a baseline projection and demographic methods were employed. The derivative demand was used to forecast the demand of nurses. The results of this study provide us with valuable information on nursing manpower planning for the 21th century. Specifically. results indicate that there will be an oversupply of nurses in the near future based on the current productivity. Based on the medical law. there will be an undersupply of nurses till 2002 but an oversupply after that. Thus. the active supply of nurses must be decreased. One way to achieve this would be decreasing the size of training and education. Thus. we recommend that the number of entrances to 4 year programs will be reduced 20% in 2004. and a reduction of 20% by 2005 in 3 year programs. The results of this study suggest the following: First. a manpower bank for nurses who are trying to reenter the market must be established. Second, improvement of education and retraining is needed for the quality control of nurses. Further studies should take into consideration the above factors.
