  • Purpose : There are various oriental medicine therapy of treating Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID) in clinics. We made the PID mice model by injection Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vagina, and investigate anti-inflammatory effects of Hongdeung-Tang among oral medication, retention enema therapy and herbal-acupuncture treatment. Method : The ICR(20-30g) mice(♀) were used. To examine the occurrence of inflammation, LPS in different concentration was injected into the vagina of the mice, and White Blood Cell(WBC) in blood was counted. To examine anti-inflammatory effects, 6 mice were assigned to each of the normal group, the control group and the sample group. Hongdeung-Tang was medicated in oral and rectal with 1.0g/kg low dose and 3.0g/kg high dose and by herbal acupucture for 5 days, 2 days before LPS injection. After 3days from LPS injection, blood was collected from retro-orbital plexus, and WBC, Interleukin-6(IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor-${\alpha}$(TNF-${\alpha}$) in the blood was counted. Result : After LPS injection with each dose, WBC count showed significant increase depending on LPS concentration from $100{\mu}g/kg$, and it was maximized at 3 or 4 days after LPS injection. the Hongdeung-Tang treatment groups, The number of WBC was decreased significantly only in low dose and high dose oral medication, and IL-6 concentration showed significant decrease in oral and rectal medication as well as in herbal acupuncture treatment. TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration was decreased significantly in oral and rectal medication of low dose and high dose. herbal-acupuncture treatment group datas showed reductive tendency. Conclusion : Based on above results, we made the PID mice model by injection LPS in vagina, and demonstrated anti-inflammatory effect of Hongdeung-Tang of oral medication, retention enema therapy and herbal-acupuncture treatment.

  • Ileus is blockage of the intestine that prevents the contents of the intestine from passing to the lower bowel. In western medical treatment, surgery is mandatory for severe cases such as strangulation ileus. However more generally, conservative management is used for treatment. Examples of conservative management are decompression with tube, fluid treatment, enema and fasting cure. Until now, many oriental medical studies have been conducted on chronic ileus, but almost none on acute ileus. The results for the case in this report suggest that oriental medical treatment such as acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine is effective in treating acute ileus. We think that further studies should be conducted on a combination therapy with other oriental medical treatment such as retention enema.

There are three categories of etimological factors of constipation, that is, endogenous, exogenous and non-exo-endogenous factor. The endogenous factor is caused by seven emotions, called depression of Ki and stagnation of Ki. The exogenous factor is six excessive atmospheric influences, for example, wind, cold, dampness, heat and dryness. And the non-exo-endogenous factors are overfatigue, improper diet, stagnated blood and deficiency of Ki and blood that comes from old age, long disease and after delivery. 2. According to Internal Organs there are constipation due to deficiency syndrome of the stomach, excess syndrome of the stomach, deficiency syndrome of kidney and splenic constipation. And Differentiation of syndromes according to Ki and blood, there are constipation of deficiency type and excess type. There are constipation due to stagnation and deficiency of Ki, deficiency of blood and stagnated blood. 3. Principles and Methods of treatment 1) Herbal Medicine (1) Excess type [1] Constipation due to heat : Seunggitang(承氣湯) and Majainwhan(麻子仁丸) [2] Constipation due to stagnation of Ki : Samatang(四磨湯) and Yukmatang(六磨湯) (2) Deficiency type [1] Constipation due to deficiency of Ki : Whanggitang(黃?湯) [2] Constipation due to deficiency of blood: Yunjangwhan(潤腸丸) [3] Constipation due to cold : Jechunjun(濟川煎) and Banyuwhan(半硫丸) 2) Enema therapy: It is a method to induce defecation by honey or pig's bile juice for weak people. 3) Acupuncture and Moxibustion: Acupoints used to treat constipation are BL25, ST25 and TE6. • Purpose: Endometriosis has been thought to be related with blood stasis in uterus. Pinelliae Tuber is a herb which has effectiveness of dispelling phlegm which can be transformed into blood stasis, so is used in gynecology blood stasis-desease. Therefore in the present study, the effects of Pinelliae Tuber on endometriosis were investigated. Also retention enema therapy acts on the limited part directly, so is used frequently in gynecology clinic. This study was to examine the comparative effects on the surgical induction of endometriosis in the rat between orally and rectally administered with Pinelliae Tuber extract. Methods: The endometrial tissue was autografted to Rat's small intestine. Rats with surgically induced endometriosis were orally and rectally administerd with Pinelliae Tuber extract for 40 days. Size of ectopic uterine implants at the serosal wall and concentration of progesterone, estradiol, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-I0 in serum were examined and compared with the control group. Results: There was no difference in the size of ectopic uterine implants of experimental group compared with control group. The concentration of IL-10 level was significantly decreased in orally administered experimental group and the concentration of progesterone, IL-6 level was significantly decreased in rectally administered experimental group. There was no significant difference between orally and rectally administerd with Pinelliae Tuber. Conclusion: Judging from the above results, it can be suggested that Pinelliae Tuber should be not a useful agent for inhibiting the proliferation of uterine endometrial tissue. There is no difference between orally and rectally administerd with Pinelliae Tuber extract.
