  • The use of strut preloading method is gradually increasing in braced excavations in Korea. And it is necessary to analyse the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, bending moment and strut axial force etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils were peformed in strut preloading application. As results, about 50% of design strut load was effective as a preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of structures. And at least the effective stiffness of strut should be over 25% of the ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. In order to protect excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut was rather effective way than to increase the stiffness of strut and braced wall, but the excessive axial force of strut should be checked simultaneously.

  • When compared with conventional retaining wall system, there are many advantages to reinforced soil such as cost effectiveness, flexibility and so on. The use of reinforced soil have been increased in the last 17 years in Korea. In this study, a full-scale reinforced soil with rigid facing were constructed to investigate the behavior of reinforcing system. The results of soil pressure and strain of reinforcement during construction are described. The influence of compaction on soil pressure and strain of reinforcement is addressed. The results show that lateral earth pressures on the wall are active state during backfill. It is obtained that the lateral soil pressure depends on the installation condition of pressure cell and construction condition. It is also observed that maximum tensile strains of reinforcement are located on 50cm to 150cm from the wall. Long-term measurement will be followed to verify the design assumptions with respect to the distribution of lateral stress in the reinforcement

  • The propose of this study is to survey the revetments installed in Gangwon Province for identifying their characteristics. The survey showed that in eastern Gangwon Province, gabion, retaining wall and concrete blocks took about 63% or more, and in western Gangwon Province, dry wall, gabion and retaining wall, 68% or more. Gabion and dry wall had better vegetation coverage in western Gangwon Province than in eastern Gangwon Province. That is thought to be due to slope of river and under-water frequency.

  • The Mononobe-Okabe method is generally used to evaluate the dynamic earth force for the seismic design of retaining walls. However, the Mononobe-Okabe method does not consider the effects of the dynamic interactions between the backfill soil and the wall. In fact, a phase difference exists between the inertia force and the seismic earth pressure. In this study, shaking table tests were peformed on gravity walls retaining dry backfill sand to analyze the influence of several parameters (the unit weight of the wall, the input acceleration and base friction) on the development of the seismic earth pressure. The experiments revealed that the magnitude of the inertia force mobilized during seismic loading affected the seismic earth pressure. The difference in the phase angles between the inertia force and the seismic earth pressure was retained at 180 degrees before the wall failed but its magnitude changed significantly as the wall began to fail.

  • According to develop urban area, the depth and floor area of basement tend to become deeper and larger. Excavation work for basement floor work is very important because its cost take 20% of total construction cost. Therefore, many studies of developing retaining wall system have performed for feasibility and safety in deep excavation work. In this study, new supporting system used high-strength pipe for retaining wall is introduced to reduce the construction cost and improve the safety and constructability by analyzing case study.

  • The application of mechanically stabilized earth wall(MSEW) with segmental front panel has been increasing in highway construction due to its cost-effectiveness. However, some failures during construction have been reported and many field engineers are reluctant to select this method for important structure. One of the main reasons may be that there is no moderate specification for design and construction of MSEW yet. This paper discussed the main results of analysis on a case of block-type segmental retaining wall in highway construction. Based on the results, some recommendations on design and construction method of MSEW are presented.

  • The advantages of precast production are fast construction, reduction of labor and insurance of good quality. In recently, the application of the precast production is increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical modelling that was carried out to evaluate the stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under dynamic train loading. The two-dimensional explicit dynamic finite element method (ABAQUS) was used to carry out the numerical analyses. The train loading to act track is calculated by using the real measured phase angle data. Mainly, the displacement and acceleration of wall structure in time domain analyzed to evaluate the stability under the dynamic train load.

  • For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.

  • Pseudo static analysis using the Mononobe-Okabe method and numerical analysis considering a small strain nonlinearity from the soil were performed to determine the bearing pressure changes of the inverted T-type retaining wall subjected to earthquake motions. In many cases, an inverted 'T' type retaining wall of more than 10 m shows bearing capacity failure under earthquake conditions, despite showing sufficient bearing capacity during normal conditions. The most important reason for this is the change of the effective base area during an earthquake. In this paper, the change of the effective base area of an inverted 'T' type wall is analyzed by using finite difference element code (FLAC). In addition, the effect of dynamic bearing capacity coefficients (which has been suggested by several researchers but not adopted in current design codes and procedures) was verified.

  • In this study, Anchor Pile Precast Retaining Wall (APC) with screw shape flange was investigated and the results were arranged for designing APC specifications. Since precast materials require special care when they are manufactured, carried or treated, more accurate design and analysis of optimized dimension are needed : thus moment distribution of front foot was checked. Through full-scale field test, form and optimal stiffening shape were obtained and through fracture test with real load, applicable load was reasonably calculated. Research result in this thesis could be used as guideline or standard of designing and constructing Anchor Pile Precast Retaining Wall with screw shape flange.
