Both wild peony and cultivated peony demonstrated a slight effect and tranquilizer of anti-convulsion on the strychinine and picrotoxine but the wild plant was more effective. The methanol extract of cultivated peony root demonstrated a weak effect of muscle loosening but its mixture with water extractable fraction did not have this effect in contrast to the case wild type whose methanol extract mixture with water extractable fraction still retained a strong anti-convulsional muscle loosening effect. Therefore, it is concluded that wild peony root has more analgesic and muscle loosening effect than the cultivated counterpart has.
In order to solve the shortage of natural Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f. plant resource for the production of the important secondary metabolites triptolide and wilforine, hairy roots were induced from its root calli by Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Induced hairy roots not only could be maintained and grown well in hormone-free half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium but also could produce sufficient amounts of both triptolide and wilforine. Although hairy roots produced approximately 15% less triptolide than adventitious roots and 10% less wilforine than naturally grown roots, they could grow fast and could be a suitable system for producing both secondary metabolites compared with other tissues. Addition of $50{\mu}M$ methyl jasmonate (MeJA) could slightly affect hairy root growth, but dramatically stimulated the production of both triptolide and wilforine, whereas $50{\mu}M$ salicylic acid had no apparent effect on hairy root growth with slightly stimulatory effects on the production of both secondary metabolites. Addition of precursor nicotinic acid, isoleucine, or aspartic acid at the concentration of $500{\mu}M$ had varying effects on hairy root growth, but none of them had stimulatory effects on triptolide production, and only the former two had slightly beneficial effects on wilforine production. The majority of triptolide produced was secreted into the medium, whereas most of the produced wilforine was retained inside of hairy roots. Our studies provide a promising way to produce triptolide and wilforine in T. wilfordii hairy root cultures combined with MeJA treatment.
Purpose : To report the incidence of radiological findings from screening panoramic radiographs and verify the validity of the panoramic radiography for screening purposes. Materials and Methods : Six thousand one hundred and sixty panoramic radiographs taken from the patients visiting the Health Promotion Center of CNUH were selected for this retrospective study. Panoramic radiographs were examined into the following pathologic conditions : the presence of periodontal bone loss, dental caries, periapical radiolucencies, retained roots, impacted supernumerary teeth, impacted third molars, odontoma, cystic lesions other than radicular cyst, sialoliths, and mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesions. Number of pathologic conditions and Prevalence values were recorded. Results: The prevalences of pathologic conditions were $72.9\%$ of periodontal bone loss, $32.2\%$ of dental caries, $11.9\%$ of periapical radiolucencies, $10.8\%$ of retained roots, $0.4\%$ of root fracture, $1.0\%$ of impacted supernumerary teeth, $1.0\%$ of impacted third molars, $0.06\%$ of odontoma, $0.08\%$ of cystic lesion other than radicular cyst, $0.2\%$ of prolonged retention of deciduous tooth, $0.1\%$ of sialolith, and $0.04\%$ of mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion. Conclusion : Although the panoramic radiograph should not be used to replace intraoral radiographic and clinical examinations, this study showed that many dental pathologic conditions could be detected on panoramic radiographs. The panoramic radiograph might serve as a diagnostic aid in dental health evaluation programs.
Purpose : To evaluate the efficacy of panoramic radiography by comparing the results of clinical examination with radiographic findings. Materials and Methods: We studied 190 patients (20 men and 170 women; mean age, 40 years; range, 22 to 68 years) who visited the health promotion center of Korea Medical Science Institute and were examined both clinically and by panoramic radiography. We compared results from both examinations. Treatment options by clinical examination were described as "no treatment indicated", "treatment of dental caries", "removal of calculus", "treatment of periodontal disease", "prothodontic treatment" and "extraction of the third molar". Findings taken from the panoramic radiography were: dental caries, periapical lesion, alveolar bone loss, calculus deposition, retained root, impaction of the third molar, disease of maxillary sinus, bony change of mandibular condyle, etc. Results: The prevalence of panoramic findings were: 37.9% of dental caries, 17.4% of periapical lesions, 44.7% of alveolar bone losses, 62.6% of calculi deposition, 7.9% of retained roots, 26.8% of third molar impactions, 6.3% of diseases of maxillary sinus, 2.1 % of bony changes of mandibular condlye and 35.8% of miscellaneous lesions. Abnormal conditions revealed by panoramic radiography which had not been discovered on clinical examination were: 24.2% of the patients had dental caries, 17.4% had periapical lesions, 7.4% had calculi deposition, 5.3% had retained roots, 15.3% had third molar impactions. The opposite cases were: 5.2% had dental caries, 12.6% had calculi deposition, and 9.5% had third molar impactions. Conclusion: The use of panoramic radiography as a supplement to the clinical examination might be a valuable screening technique.

The promoters of OsCaM1 and OsCaM3 were characterized after sequencing and fused to the reporter gene, GUS. The constructs were then transformed into the tobacco plant. Histochemical analysis of GUS showed different expression patterns in pOsCaM1::GUS and pOsCaM3:: GUS transgenic plants. The expression of pOsCaM1::GUS in 4- to 15-day-old seedlings in particular was observed only in the root, while the expression of pOsCaM3::GUS was detected in both the cotyledons and root. Also, pRCaM1::GUS was detected in all the tissues surrounding the root system, while the presence of pOsCaM3::GUS was observed in the root, except in the root meristem. However, in mature transgenic plants, the expression of pOsCaM1::GUS and OsRCaM3::GUS was scarcely detected. Under wounding stress, the GUS activity of pOsCaM1 and pOsCaM3 was strongly induced, and the activity of pOsCaM3 especially, was retained for long periods. In the phloem, pOsCaM3 activity induced by hormone treatments and abiotic stresses was also identified.

Regarding the physical properties of wheat flour added with lily's root powder, elasticity in farinograms tended to increase as the ratio of added lily's root powder increased. However, viscoelasticity, absorptivity, absorption time, and stability tended to decrease after an initial increase when a certain ratio of lily's root powder was added to the wheat flour. Results from the rapid viscosity analyzer (RVA) indicated that the retention strength, final viscosity, break down, set back value, $P_{max}$ value of the alveogram, and falling number value decreased. As for gaseous release, measured with a rheofermentometer, the total amount of $CO_2$ gas generated and retained tended to decrease. As for the gelatinizing properties in terms of differences in the granularity and the amount of lily's root powder (bulbs) added to wheat flour, the initial gelatinization temperature had no effect regardless of the type or amount of general grinding and minute (ultra-fine, $10\;{\mu}m$) lily's root powder. Meanwhile, the peak viscosity and peak viscosity time exhibited significant differences in 3, 5% general grinding lily's root powder additive groups. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between 3, 5% minute lily's root powder additive groups. This is likely because the activity of the enzyme in wheat flour decreased relatively and differences in the lily's root powder granularity resulted in a variation in water absorptivity. In the preference test, flavor retention of the functional bread increased according to the granularity of lily's root powder and the ratio of added lily's root powder, thus resulting in significant differences in the mouth feel and flavor; the texture and crumb color, however, did not exhibit significant differences.
In this study, we attempt to investigate the mechanisms by which PDL cells regulate osteoclast formation and also tc know whether PDL retained their characteristic phenotype during tooth eruption and interdental separation. Rats were prepared at developmental days 21 (pre-root formation), 27(toot development), 34(advanced root formation/eruption) and at later times(adult rats). To induce severe resorption state of alveolar bone and tooth root, interdental separation with brass wire was performed between the lower first and second molars for 2 weeks in adult rats. Rat mandibles were demineralized and embedded in paraffin, and horizontal and frontal section were prepared for immuno-histochemical analysis using PDL-specific protein 22 (PDLs22), receptor activator of NFKB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) antibodies. 1. Root formation and eruption stage of tooth development. 1) PDLs22 immunolocalization was observed in tooth follicle/PDL cells and osteoblasts throught out the root formation and eruption stages of tooth development. 2) RANKL expression became stronger at eruption stage than root formation stage of tooth development. 3) Strong expression of OPG was detected in follice/PDL cells of toot formation stage but it was decreased with tooth eruption. 2. Interdental separation between lower first and second molar 1) Comparared to normal animal, multinucleated osteoclasts and odontoclasts were markedly induced in the alveolar bone and tooth root with PDL remodeling in hematoxylin-eosin section. 2) PDLs22 expression was decreased with interdental separation. 3) RANKL expression was Increased with interdental separation in PDL fibroblasts, osteoblasts, odontoclasts and it lacunae, resorting dentin, cementum and bone matrix. 4) OPG expression was slightly decreased in the PDL cells adjacent to the alveolar bone and root surface with interdental separation. These results suggested that during tooth eruption and tooth movement, RANKL and OPG in the periodontal tissues are important determinants regulating balanced alveolar bone and tooth root resorption. And it is also suggested that PDL cells retained their characteristic phenotype during tooth eruption and interdental separation except for the short period of PDL remodeling.
Objectives: This study evaluated the solubility, dimensional alteration, pH, electrical conductivity, and radiopacity of root perforation sealer materials. Materials and Methods: For the pH test, the samples were immersed in distilled water for different periods of time. Then, the samples were retained in plastic recipients, and the electrical conductivity of the solution was measured. The solubility, dimensional alteration, and radiopacity properties were evaluated according to Specification No. 57 of the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA). Statistical analyses were carried out using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test at a significance level of 5%. When the sample distribution was not normal, a nonparametric ANOVA was performed with a Kruskal-Wallis test (${\alpha}$ = 0.05). Results: The results showed that white structural Portland cement (PC) had the highest solubility, while mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based cements, ProRoot MTA (Dentsply-Tulsa Dental) and MTA BIO ($\hat{A}$ngelus Ind. Prod.), had the lowest values. MTA BIO showed the lowest dimensional alteration values and white PC presented the highest values. No differences among the tested materials were observed in the the pH and electrical conductivity analyses. Only the MTA-based cements met the ANSI/ADA recommendations regarding radiopacity, overcoming the three steps of the aluminum step wedge. Conclusions: On the basis of these results, we concluded that the values of solubility and dimensional alteration of the materials were in accordance with the ANSI/ADA specifications. PCs did not fulfill the ANSI/ADA requirements regarding radiopacity. No differences were observed among the materials with respect to the pH and electrical conductivity analyses.

Pediatric dentists are frequently encountered with fractured root fragments of primary teeth caused either by the traumatic injuries or by the accidental fractures during the procedure of tooth extractions. In these situations, we often hesitate which method to choose, extract or retain it. In general, it is recommended to retain apical fragments, as the attempts to extract the apical fragments might harm the developing permanent tooth germ. This study was designed to ensure the validity of intentional retention of the root fragments of primary teeth in the situations described above. 6 children with intentionally root fragments who experienced root fracture in primary anterior teeth were available Periodic radiographic assessment was performed at 3 months interval for $7{\sim}37$ months. The results of this study showed that apical fragments had been resorbed through physiologic process in 5 patients. Apical fragment had been gingival emergence along with the erupting permanent tooth in 1 patient. There were no evidence of interference with eruption of permanent successors. In summary we have been ensured the validity of intentionally retention of the root fragments of primary teeth. Children with being remained apical root fragment should be recalled regularly for assessment and parents should be thoroughly informed about the situation with special emphasis on the necessity of periodic check-up.

Indigenous bacteria from poplar roots (Populus mnadensis var. eugenei, 'Imperial Carolina') and Southern Californian shrub rhizospheres as well as two tree-colonizing Rhizobium strains (ATCC 10320 and 35645) were genetically engineered to express constitutively and stably toluene o-monooxygenase (TOM) from Burkholderia cepacia G4 by integrating the torn locus into the chromosome. The poplar and Rhizobium recombinants degraded trichloroethylene (TCE) at 0.8-2.1 nmol/min.mg protein (initial TCE concentration, 10u M) and competitive against the unengineered hosts in wheat and barley rhizospheres for one month (colonization at 1-23 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ CFU/cm root). In addition, six of these recombinants colonized poplar roots stably and competitively with populations as high as 79 $\pm$ 12% of all rhizosphere bacteria after 28 days (0.2-31 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ CFU/cm root). Furthermore, five of the most-competitive poplar recombinants (e.g., Pb3-1 and Pb5-1 which were identified as Pseudomonas PsK) retained the ability to express TOM for 29 days as 100 $\pm$ 0% of the recombinants detected in the poplar rhizosphere had constitutive expression of TOM.
