In addition to their function, there is growing interest in esthetics of restorations for teeth from fracture and loss. Because the perception of color depends on a lot of factors such as light source, object, observer and so on. It is difficult to make an objective expression. Therefore the using of mechanical equipment is recommended to exclude these variables and observer's vias. This study was carried out to evaluate the teeth color with a newly developed digital camera and to suggest a way to solve its flaws. After photo-taking and storaging the images of normal teeth into a computer, color spaces were examined with an image analysis system, Adobe Photoshop 3.04 and a statistical significance was determined between groups in term of teeth positions and ages. Results were as follow ; 1. Central incisor looked darker than lateral incisor(p<0.05), but lateral incisor and canine showed a similar lightness. 2. Central incisor showed more greenish color than lateral incisor and canine(p<0.05). 3. Canine showed higher yellowish value than central and lateral incisors(p<0.05). 4. Central incisor and canine showed no difference with aging. But in lateral incisor, teeth in fifth decade were lighter than those of third(p<0.05) and teeth in third decade were more reddish and yellowish than those of fourth decade(p<0.05).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ferric and ferric ions contained in phosphoric acid solution as a pretreatment solution on bonding of MMA/TBBO resin to dentin. Each of 1 % and 3 % ferric chloride. cupric chloride. cupric sulfate. and cupric nitrate was mixed into 10% phosphoric acid solution and pretreated dentin surface of bovine anterior teeth for 30 seconds followed- by water rinse and dry. Tensile bond strength was determined after bonding of pretreated dentin with MMA/TBBO resin by use of brush-on ;technique and storing for 24 hours in 3it distilled water. The amount of cupric ions adsorbed on pretreated dentin surface was detected by Wave-Dispersion X-ray microanalyzer for different groups of each pretreatment solution containing cupric salts. The pretreatment with cupric ions contained in 10% phosphoric acid solution was effective to increase bonding strength of MMA/TBBO resin to dentin but not in case of ferric ions. The pretreatment with 3 % cupric chloride and cupric nitrate both enhanced significant increase in bonding strength compared to the control group of 10% phosphoric acid solution(p<0.05). Cupric ions measured in pretreated dentin surface was higher in 3 % cupric chloride group than in 1% cupric chloride group, but couldn't find distinct relationship from the results of this experiment between the amount of adsorbed cupric ions according to the kind of cupric salts and the bonding strength value.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between the composite resin and light - cured glass ionomer cement base / liners treated by the several methods. The light - cured glass ionomer cement(Vitrebond / Cavalite) were injected into cavites prepared in acrylic plates. One hundred and twenty specimens were uniformly prepared and devided into 3 groups. For the first group, primer was not applied to glass ionomer cement. For the second group, no application of primer was undertaken and light - curing procedure to uncured glass ionomer cement surface which was covered by bonding agent was undertaken. After bonding composite resin to light - cured glass ionomer surface, the specimens, were stored in $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity for 1 hour. The following results were obtained : 1. The omission of application of a primer did not produce a significantly poorer bond strength. 2. Light - curing technique to uncured glass ionomer cement which was covered by bonding agent did not produce a significantly poorer bonding strength. 3. The bond strength of Cavalite to composite resin was significantly higher than that of Vitrebond. 4. There was no significant difference between two different types of composite materials(Silux-Plus / Herculite XR) when it was applied to bond to glass ionomer cement.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of hand instrumentation with K - file and ultrasonic instrumentation and irrigation system in removing pulpal debris and canal wall planing. 20 mandibular molar teeth were instrumented to size 30 K - file and 20 teeth were instrumented with ultrasonic Suprasson. And Normal Saline and 2.5% NaOCl were used as irrigation solution. All specimens were viewed at the coronal, middle, and apical third of the root canals for the evaluation of the cleaning effect under the multiview microscope. The result were as follows : 1. All of the technique and irrigation solution was effecient in the debris removal and canal wall planing at the cervical and middle thirds of the root canal. 2. All of the techniques and irrigation solutions was less efficient in the debris removal and canal planing at the apical third of the root canal. 3. The debris removal and canal wall planing was depended more on the anatomical variations of the root canal than on the techniques and irrigation solutions.
Four root canal sealers, Apatite Root Sealer I and II composed mainly of hydroxyapatite/tricalciumphosphate, Sealapex containing calcium hydroxide, and Roth Sealer composed of zinc oxide - eugenol were compared on the culture of L929 fibroblasts. MIT (Methyl Thiazole Tetrazolium Bromide) colorimetric technique was used to measure the mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity. Results were as follows: 1. Hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate mixed sealers were significantly less toxic compared with calcium hydroxide and zinc oxide - eugenol type sealers. High pH of the calcium hydroxide sealer and release of eugenol component from the zinc oxide - eugenol type sealer were presumed to be the cause of the toxicity of these two sealers. In no cases, there were more cytoblastic effects in hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate mixed sealers compared to the control groups. 2. In all experimental groups, toxicity was decreased as dilutions were increased. However in zinc oxide-eugenol type sealer the cell activity was weakened for all dilution groups. 3. Regarding the effect of setting time, Apatite I and Sealapex were less toxic as the setting progressed. Apatite II kept constant regardless of the different time ellapsed after setting but Roth sealer revealed significantly higher toxicity for all experimental groups. 4. Comparing two different culture periods of 24 hours and 72 hours, Apatite I showed higher cell activities in longer period(72 hours) while Apatite II did not. Sealapex and Roth sealer, however, showed significantly lower cell activities in longer period.
Since the first success of simple mastoidectomy, about 100 years ago by Schwartze (1873). Zollner (1951) and Wullstein (1952) had formulated systemically the basic principles of restorative surgery of chronic ear diseases. Although the last century has shown a remarkable advances in surgical technique, there are still lots of debatable problems yet. The authors experienced 970 cases of middle ear surgery during last four years and clinical and statistical analysis were done as a preliminary report.
The term "endo-perio" lesion has been proposed to describe the destructive lesion resulting from inflammatory products found in varying degrees in both the periodontium and the pulpal tissues. In most of the cases, clinical symptoms disappear following successful endodontic therapy. However failure after conventional root canal treatment calls for surgical intervention. A 35 year old male patient with endo-perio lesion in right maxillary lateral incisor was treated with platelet rich fibrin (PRF) and alloplastic bone substitute after conventional endodontic therapy. At the end of 6 months there was gain in clinical attachment, increased radiographic bone fill and reduction in probing depth which was maintained till 18 month follow-up. Present case report aims to evaluate the efficacy of PRF and alloplastic bone substitute in the management of intrabony defect associated with endo-perio lesion in maxillary lateral incisor because the healing potential of PRF and bone graft has not been widely studied in endodontics. The use of PRF allows the clinician to optimize tissue remodelling, wound healing and angiogenesis by the local delivery of growth factors and proteins. The novel technique described here enables the clinician to be benefited from the full regenerative capacity of this autologous biologic material.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantity of debris which was extruded apically after canal instrumentation using different types of enlarging instrument in endodontic resin models. Five groups of 9 endodontic resin models were instrumented using each different technique : hand instrumentation without early coronal flaring. hand instrumentation after early coronal flaring. and three nickel-titanium engine-driven instrumentations (Hero 642, Protaper, $K^$). Debris extruded from apical foramen during instrumentation was collected on preweighed CBC bottle, desiccated and weighted using electronic balance. The results were analyzed using Kruskal-wallis test and Mann-Whitney U rank sum test at a significance level of 0.05. The results were as follows: 1. All of instrumentation techniques produced apically extruded debris. 2. Group without early coronal flaring extruded significant more debris than groups with early coronal flaring. 3. There was no significant difference among early coronal flaring groups. The early coronal flaring is very important to reduce the amount of debris extruded apically.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate four different composite resins in vitro for microleakage in Class II box type restorations that have gingival margins apical to the cementoenamel junction. Forty caries free extracted human molars were used in this study. The Class II cavities were prepared 1.0mm below cementoenamel junction with a #701 carbide bur. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups, each group comprising 20 treated cavities according to adhesives and filling materials ; Group 1: Scotchbond Multipurpose/Z 100. Group 2: Ariston Liner/Ariston pHc, Group 3: One Step/Pyramid, Group 4: Prime & Bond NT/SureFil. To simulate the clinical situation during restoration placement, a restoration template was fabricated and composite resin was filled using a three sited light-curing incremental technique. The specimens were stored in the 100% humidity for 7 days prior to thermocycling. The specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 24 hours and then embeded in transparent acrylic resin and sectioned mesiodistally with a diamond wheel saw. The degree of marginal leakage was scored under the stereomicroscope($\times$20) and the data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney test. (omitted)
An experimental investigation of the physical properties of light curing composite resin P-50 was performed, in which an argon ion laser beam was irradiated. The physical and mechanical properties of laser polymerized composite resin were determined by measuring the compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, curing depth and microhardness depending upon the experimental conditions such as the laser irradiation time(10sec, 20sec, 30sec) and laser power(300mW, 500mW, 1000mW). These observations were compared with a conventional visible light curing technique. In addition, to evaluate the marginal adaptation, Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of the extracted premolar and filled with P-50 light curing resin. The test samples were irradiated with both light sources so that the interface between the restoration and the tooth structure were observed under scanning electron microscope. The most of physical and mechanical properties of the laser cured resin showed a remarkable improvement than those treated with the conventional light source, while the observations with the scanning electron microscope provided no significant difference for two polymerized sources. From the results in the experiment it appears that the potential of an argon ion laser is of important value of the use in the polymerization of composite resin.
