The objective of the present work is to optimize process parameters namely, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut in milling of AISI 304 stainless steel. In this work, experiments were carried out as per the Taguchi experimental design and an $L_{27}$ orthogonal array was used to study the influence of various combinations of process parameters on surface roughness (Ra) and material removal rate (MRR). As a dynamic approach, the multiple response optimization was carried out using grey relational analysis (GRA) and desirability function analysis (DFA) for simultaneous evaluation. These two methods are considered in optimization, as both are multiple criteria evaluation and not much complicated. The optimum process parameters found to be cutting speed at 63 m/min, feed rate at 600 mm/min, and depth of cut at 0.8 mm. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to classify the significant parameters affecting the responses. The results indicate that depth of cut is the most significant parameter affecting multiple response characteristics of GFRP composites followed by feed rate and cutting speed. The experimental results for the optimal setting show that there is considerable improvement in the process.
Optimization of the turning process has been concentrated on the selection of the optimal cutting parameters, such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. However, optimization of the cutting parameters does not necessarily guarantee the maximum profit. For the maximization of the profit, parameters other than cutting parameters have to be taken care of. In this study, 8 price-related parameters were considered to maximize the profit of the product. Regression equations obtained from RSM technique to relate the cutting parameters and maximum cutting volume with a given insert were used. The experiments with four combinations of cutting inserts and material were executed to compare the results that made the profit and cutting volume maximized. The results showed that the cutting parameters for volume and profit maximization were totally different. Contrary to our intuition, global optimization was achieved when the number of inserts change was larger than those for volume maximization. It is attributed to the faster cutting velocity, which decreases processing time and increasing the number of tool used and the total tool changing time.
Conventionally in pulsed gas metal arc welding (GMAW-P), drop transfer is analyzed with simplest square pulse waveform. While the pulse current is described by four parameters (peak current magnitude and time plus base current magnitude and time), it deviates the real pulse shape. Real pulse can be better idealized by the trapezoidal pulse waveform described by two additional parameters, i.e., current rise and fall rate (dI/dt). Power source response rate is described by these parameters. In this work, the effect of these parameters on drop transfer is predicted by the force displacement model (FDM). While peak current has significant effects on drop detachment, drop transfer is also influenced by the current rise rate. Predictions indicate that the current rise rate can have considerable effects on the size of the detached drop if other pulse parameters are kept constant. FDM is applied to determine peak time for one drop one pulse condition (ODOP) when rests of the pulse parameters are given. The predicted range of ODOP shows good agreement with experimental data.
Grinding process has unique characteristics compared with other machining processes. The cutting edges of the grinding wheel don't have uniformity and act differently on the workpiece at each grinding. The response surface analysis is one of various methods for optimizing and evaluating the process parameters to achieve the desired output. In this study, the effect of the grinding parameters on outcomes of the surface grinding was analyzed experimently. To predict the grinding outcomes and to select the grinding conditions before grinding, the second-order response surface models for the grinding force and the surface roughness were developed.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the liquefaction cyclic shear stress ratio considering the soil uncertainty. In this study, the probabilistic ground response analysis and the cyclic shear stress ratio analysis for the liquefaction potential evaluation are performed considering the soil variability. The statistical properties of input ground parameters were analyzed to investigate the parameters affecting the seismic response analysis. The Probabilistic analysis was carried out by Monte Carlo Simulation method. The ground response analysis was performed considering the soil variability and the probability distribution characteristics of the ground acceleration. The probability distribution of the peak ground acceleration by seismic characteristics was presented. The differences of liquefaction shear stress ratio results according to soil variability were compared and analyzed. The maximum acceleration of the ground by the deterministic method was analyzed to be overestimation of the ground amplification phenomenon. Also, the shear stress ratio was overestimated.
A single-inverted-pendulum model is presented to simulate and predict the passive response of human balance control. This simplified biomechanical model was comprised of a torsional spring and damper, and a lump mass. An estimation of frequency response function was conducted to parameterize the complexity. The frequency domain identification method is used to identify the parameters of the model. The equivalent viscoelastic parameters of standing body were obtained and there was good conformity between the simulation and experimental result.
This paper investigates the effects of micro-tunneling on buried pipelines parametrically. A simplified numerical approach was developed and various parametric studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of ground settlements on the response of buried pipelines. The controlled parameters included the pipe stiffness, ground loss magnitude, and pipe location with respect to a micro-tunnel. Maximum settlement and curvature along a pipeline have been investigated and compared among others for different conditions. In addition, the numerical results have been compared with a theoretical method by Attewell et al. (1986), which is based on a Winkler type linear-elastic solution. The comparison indicated that the response of buried pipes to micro-tunneling-induced ground settlements highly depends on the soil-pipe interaction including the separation and slippage of pipe from soil with the effects of the investigated parameters. Therefore, rather than using the theoretical method directly, it would be a better assessment of the response of buried pipelines to consider the soil-pipe interaction in more realistic conditions.
A loss function approach to a multiresponse problem is considered, when process parameters are regarded as random variables. The variation of each response may be amplified through so called propagation of error (POE), which is defined as the standard deviation of the transmitted variability in the response as a function of process parameters. The forms of POE for each response and for a pair of responses are proposed and they are reflected in our loss function approach to determine the optimal condition. The proposed method is illustrated using a polymer case. The result is compared with the case where parameter fluctuation is not considered.
The response of single story buildings and other case studies are investigated to observe trends in response and to develop a better understanding of the impact of some design parameters on the seismic response of CBF. While it is recognized that many parameters have an influence on the behavior of braced frames, the focus of this study is mostly on quantifying energy dissipation in compression and its effectiveness on seismic performance. Based on dynamic analyses of single story braced frame and case studies, it is found that a bracing member designed with bigger R and larger KL/r results in lower normalized cumulative energy, i.e., cumulative compressive energy normalized by the corresponding tensile energy (${\sum}E_C/E_T$), in both cases.

For evaluating the response fluctuation of the actual environmental acoustic system excited by arbitrary random inputs, it is important to predict a whole probability distribution form closely connected with evaluation indexes Lx, Leq and so on. In this paper, a new type evaluation method is proposed by introducing three functional models matched to the prediction of the response probability distribution from a problem-oriented viewpoint. Because of the positive variable of the sound intensity, the response probability density function can be reasonably expressed theoretically by a statistical Laguerre expansion series form. The relationship between input and output is described by the regression relationship between the distribution parameters(containing expansion coefficients of this expression) and the stochastic input. These regression functions are expressed in terms of the orthogonal series expansion and their parameters are determined based on the least-squares error criterion and the measure of statistical independency.
