  • This study was carried out at the CWC of Chosun university for the purpose of resistance performance improvement of planing hull, and the results of the tests were confirmed cooperatively with WJFEL. G/T 100 ton class planing hull form was selected, and the improvement of hull form including appendages were performed by using some model test techniques. The model test scope comprises resistance relative tests including wave profile observation, trim and sinkage measurement and flow visualization tests at full load and trial conditions for one bare hull and for two appended hulls. The final wedge and spray strip combined with improved hull form showed about 1.0 knot speed improvement at both of full and trial conditions, and outstanding improvement for fore wave phenomena.

  • Composite materials, composed of multiple constituent materials with dissimilar properties, are actively adopted in a wide range of industrial sectors due to their remarkable strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratio. Nevertheless, the failure mechanism of composite materials is highly complicated due to their sophisticated microstructure, making it much harder to predict their residual material lives in real life applications. A promising solution for this safety issue is structural damage detection. In the present paper, damage detection of composite material via electrical resistance-based technique and infrared thermography is reviewed. The operating principles of the two damage detection methodologies are introduced, and some research advances of each techniques are covered. The advancement of IR thermography-based non-destructive technique (NDT) including optical thermography, laser thermography and eddy current thermography will be reported, as well as the electrical impedance tomography (EIT) which is a technology increasingly drawing attentions in the field of electrical resistance-based damage detection. A brief comparison of the two methodologies based on each of their strengths and limitations is carried out, and a recent research update regarding the coupling of the two techniques for improved damage detection in composite materials will be discussed.

  • We fabricated a closed coils by using resistive-joint method and the joint resistance of the coils were estimated by field decay technique in liquid nitrogen. We used the Runge-kutta method for the numerical analysis to calculate the decay properties. The closed coil was wound by $(Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_x$/Ag tape. Both ends the tape were overlapped and soldered to each other. The current was induced in a closed coils by external magnetic flux density. Its decay characteristic was observed by means of measuring the magnetic flux density generated by induced current at the center of the closed coil with hall sensor. The joint resistance was calculated as the ratio of the inductance of the loop to the time constants. The joint resistances were evaluated as a function of critical current of loop, contact length, sweep time, and external magnetic flux density in a contact length of 7 cm. It was observed that joint resistance was dependent on contact length of a closed coil, but independent of critical current, sweep time, and external magnetic flux density. The joint resistance was measured to be higher for a standard four-probe method, compared with that for the field decay technique. This implies that noise of measurement in a standard four-probe method is larger than that of field decay technique. It was estimated that joint resistance was $8.0{\times}10^{-9}{\Omega}$ to $11.4{\times}10^{-9}{\Omega}$ for coils of contact length for 7 cm. It was found that 40Pb/60Sn solder are unsuitable for persistent mode.

  • The oscillating properties of quartz Crystal Microbalance(QCM) were analyzed by electrical measurement. We tried to analyze the properties of quartz crystal coated with Langmuir-Bladgett(LB) films using the frequency and resistance at resonance in the electrical equivalent circuit. The resonant frequency was decreased linearly as to layers of LB films, however, there are some gap between theoretical values, Sauerbrey's equation and experimental values. The resistance was increase nonlinearly as to layers.

  • There are various methods to evaluate tree vigor. Cambial electrical resistance represents tree vigor using the method of electrophysiological diagnosis. This study investigated the vigor of several tree species using Shigometer, and compared the differences among the species. The factors, such as foliation, trunk orientation and bark temperature, which affect electrical resistance were also investigated. The needle penetration into cambium was controlled to keep the depth consistent in order to minimize measurement error. Each of three trees were selected from Zelkova serrata, Ginkgo biloba, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Pinus koraiensis, and Liriodendron tulipifera. The electrical resistances were measured at 60 and 120 cm height of the stem in 4 directions from March until May 2011. The soil conditions in surrounding areas and tree stress responses were also measured. The results were analyzed for the relationship between electrical resistance and the affecting factors. The electrical resistance showed a relatively higher level before foliation until mid-March. The values started to decline from April and recorded a minimal level on May 11. The changes of soil moisture, soil electric conductivity, and tree stress responses during the measurement period showed a similar trend to that of electrical resistance. The Pinus koraiensis, an evergreen conifer, showed few changes on the electrical resistance values during the measurement period. Zelkova serrata, Ginkgo biloba, and Metasequoia glyptostroboides showed the highest bark temperatures and lowest electrical resistances at their south-facing stem. Shigometer can provide measures simple to assess tree vigor in the fields, and to the management of trees.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the effects of environmental factors such as soil moisture, light intensity, temperature and humidity on changes in cambial electrical resistance. To improve data quality, cambial electrical resistance was continuously measured at fixed points by using a data logger isolated from alternating current. The relationship between environmental factors and changes in cambial electrical resistance was also analyzed. The results are as follows: 1. Cambial electrical resistance is highly correlated to the temperature of the measured area(r=-0.934). Therefore, temperature compensation is needed to analyze the effects of other environmental factors on cambial electrical resistance changes. 2. If temperature is compensated for, the change of cambial electrical resistance is highly correlated to water vapor pressure(r=-0.836). 3. If temperature and humidity are compensated for, the change of cambial electrical resistance is highly correlated to intensity of light(r=-0.738). 4. Diurnal deviation of soil water potential is not more significantly related than the change of cambial electrical resistance. However, in the long-term, soil water potential and cambial electrical resistance are highly correlated(r=-0.831). This indicates that soil moisture significantly influences the long-term change of cambial electrical resistance.

  • Various metallic materials are coated on Fe base materials via thermal spraying or welding process to improve both corrosion resistance as well as erosion resistance of the Fe base materials used in buildings and special works. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coat are estimated by means of hardness measurement and anodic polarization test. In additions, the effect of alloying elements and microstructure of the coatings on the mechanical and chemical properties of the coat is investigated using X- ray diffraction, Optical microscope, Transmission electron microscopy and Auger analysis. The coating deposited by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding exhibit a good combination of hardness and corrosion properties.

  • The results of the electrical contact conductivity of multi-contact spots accounting the surface roughness and the non-conductive films of different origins such as air, water, cutting oil, and machining oil are presented. The array of metal spheres compressed between two flat plates has been used for simulation of the contact behavior of multiple contact of solids, under normal loading. Measurement of electrical contact resistance has been made using the equipment providing the adequate accuracy in the range of micro Ohms. The data on electrical contact resistance have been compared with theoretical predictions using the multiple contact model of constriction resistance. The effect of single spot number and array on conductivity of contact has been evaluated. The results of the experiments show that the contact resistance are closely related to the number of loading cycles, form of surface roughness, and presence of non-conductive films that reduce the size of the real electrical contact spots.

  • The fall-of-potential method is commonly used in measuring the ground resistance of large-scaled grounding system and the current and potential auxiliary electrodes are horizontally arranged. Because the distances between the ground grid to be tested and auxiliary electrodes are limited in downtown areas, it is very difficult to measure accurately the ground resistance of large-scaled grounding system. In this paper, the fall-of-potential method of measuring the ground resistance with the vertically-placed current and potential auxiliary electrodes was examined and discussed. The validity and good accuracy of the proposed method of measuring the ground resistance were confirmed through various simulations and actual tests carried out in uniform and two-layer soil structures.

  • In this study, S food manufacturing business located in Chungbuk was selected as the subject, and the transition in insulation resistance in major electrical equipment used in this food manufacturing business was analyzed for 4 years (2018-2021). It was confirmed that the insulation resistance decreased over time for all 18 electrical facilities. Insulation resistance changed due to environmental influences such as load characteristics and ambient temperature. Particularly in the case of the food manufacturing industry, it was confirmed that the decrease started after 2 years, although it varied depending on equipment and environmental influences. Furthermore, it was confirmed that management through predicting the management cycle of electrical equipment is possible by deriving a regression equation through regression analysis of insulation resistance measurement values.
