  • Ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL), which is performed at a low pressure and at room temperature, is known as a low cost method for the fabrication of nano-scale patterns. In the patterning process, maintaining the uniformity of the residual layer is critical as the pattern transfer of features to the substrate must include the timed etch of the residual layer prior to the etching of the transfer layer. In pursuit of a thin and uniform residual layer thickness, the initial volume and the position of each droplet both need to be optimized. However, the monomer mixtures of resin had a tendency to evaporate. The evaporation rate depends on not only time, but also the initial volume of the monomer droplet. In order to decide the initial volume of each droplet, the accurate prediction of evaporation behavior is required. In this study, the theoretical model of the evaporation behavior of resin droplets was developed and compared with the available experimental data in the literature. It is confirmed that the evaporation rate of a droplet is not proportional to the area of its free surface, but to the length of its contact line. Finally, the parameter of the developed theoretical model was calculated by curve fitting to decide the initial volume of resin droplets.

  • Carbon fibers were coated with carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE, water dispersed), water soluble polymers poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine)(PHEA) or water insoluble poly(hydroxy ether)(PHE). Interfacial shear strength of polymer coated carbon fibers was measured by micro-droplet tests with vinyl ester resin, and approximately 30 samples were tested. The interfacial adhesion of poly-mers to carbon fibers was also evaluated, and diffusion behavior of polymer films in vinyl ester resin was investigated. The carbon fibers after testing and diffusion samples were analysed by SEM in order to understand adhesion mechanism. Interfacial shear strength of carbon fibers was enhanced by the coating of PHE and C-PHE which have good or marginal solubility in vinyl ester resin, respectively, but not by the coating of PHEA possibly due to the poor solubility in vinyl ester resin.

  • This paper aims to study flow characteristics of epoxy resin w.r.t. the sizing agents treated on the carbon fibers which have the same surface morphologies before sizing treatment. Dynamic contact angle (DCA) was measured to evaluate wettability of a single carbon fiber. Wicking test and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) were performed to find relation between DCA measurement results and impregnation characteristics. In addition, surface properties of the carbon fibers such as surface free energy and chemical compositions were measured and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the carbon fiber and the resin were experimentally characterized by using micro-droplet tests. According to these experimental results, the sizing agent for carbon fibers should have appropriate level of surface free energy and good chemical compatibility with the resin to reconcile resin flow characteristics and interfacial strength.

  • Poly(arylene ether phosphin oxide) (PEPO), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700, Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. poly(hydroxy ether) (PHE), carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE) and poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine) (PHEA) were utilized for a coating of carbon fibers. Interfacial shear strength(IFSS) of polymers to carbon fibers was also evaluated in order to understand the adhesion mechanism. IFSS was measured via micro-droplet tests, and failure surfaces were analyzed by SEM. Diffusion between polymer and vinyl ester resin was investigated as a function of styrene content; 33. 40 or 50wt.% and the solubility parameters of polymers were calculated. The results were correlated to the interfacial shear strength. The highly enhanced interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was obtained with PEPO coating, and marginally improved IFSS with PHE, Udel$^{\circledR}$ and C-PHE coatings, but no improvement with PHEA and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ coatings.

  • This paper describes the influence of the electrode materials, moisture content, electrolyte density, temperature, surface state, ion absorbent on the C.T.I of phenolic resin by the I.E,C, 112 method. C.T.I are increased for electrode materials with low hydrogen overvoltage and high soluble point. Increusing moisture content of samples increased by logarithmical on the droplet number to tracking breakdown. Increasing electrolyte temperature region above 70-80(.deg.C) decreased hydrogen over-voltage, following the density changes are decreased by C.T.I=1/aD$^{2}$-bD+C.

  • To imprint 70-nm wide line-patterns, we used a newly developed ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL) process in which an elementwise patterned stamp (EPS), a large-area stamp, and pressurized air are used to imprint a wafer in a single step. For a single-step UV-NIL of a 4' wafer, we fabricated two identical $5'\times5'\times0.09'(W{\times}L{\times}H)$ quartz EPSs, except that one is with nanopatterns and the other without nanopatterns. Both of them consist of 16 small-area stamps, called elements, each of which is $10\;mm\;\times\;10\;mm$. UV-curable low-viscosity resin droplets were dispensed directly on each element of the EPSs. The volume and viscosity of each droplet are 3.7 nl and 7 cps. Droplets were dispensed in such a way that no air entrapment between elements and wafer occurs. When the droplets were fully pressed between ESP and wafer, some incompletely filled elements were observed because of the topology mismatch between EPS and wafer. To complete those incomplete fillings, pressurized air of 2 bar was applied to the bottom of the wafer for 2 min. Experimental results have shown that nanopatterns of the EPS were successfully transferred to the resin layer on the wafer.

  • This paper describes the carbonization characteristics of a phenolic resin deteriorated by tracking under the environment of a fire. In the experiment, a liquids droplet of 1[%] NaCl was dripped on the phenolic resin to cause a tracking with 110[V], 220[V] voltages applied. It can be addressed from the experimental results that when an insulator is carbonized by an external fire, its structure is amorphous. If an insulator is carbonized by electrical cause, on the other hand, its structure would be crystalline. In order to observe the surface change of the phenolic resin, the tracking process was analyzed by using SEM. In the case that the materials are carbonized under heat or fire, the exothermic peak appears around 500[$^{\circ}C$]. This is one of the important factors to determine the cause of fires. As a result of DTA, the exothermic peaks of an untreated sample showed at 333.4[$^{\circ}C$], 495.7[$^{\circ}C$] but those of a sample deteriorated by tracking appeared at 430.6[$^{\circ}C$], 457.6[$^{\circ}C$] in a voltage of 110[V], and at 456.2[$^{\circ}C$], 619.7[$^{\circ}C$] in a voltage of 220[V]. It is possible, therefore, to distinguish a virgin sample from carbonized samples(graphite) by the exothermic peak.

  • Analysis of wettability between epoxy resin and glass fabric was studied. The mixing ratios of epoxy resin and anhydride hardener were varied as 1:0.5, l:l and l:1.2. Catalyst content was fixed as 0.1wt% of the mixed resin. A curing analysis by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) showed a possible impregnation of the mixed resin at the room temperature. An effective contact angle of the mixed epoxy resin drop onto the glass fabric being preset on a flat glass plate was measured as a function of time. The wet area of the epoxy resin drop was also measured. Behaviors of the contact angle, the droplet height, the neat wet area and the coefficient of wettability were used to evaluate the wettability of the epoxy resin onto the glass fabric. It was concluded that the equivalent ratio of 1: 1.2 was the most suitable for the wettability.

  • In this study, a new algorithm, named as Contour Offset Algorithm(COA) is developed to fabricate precise features or patterns in the range of several micrometers by nano replication printing(nRP) process. In the nRP process, a femto-second laser is scanned on a photosensitive monomer resin in order to induce polymerization of the liquid monomer according to a voxel matrix which is transformed from the bitmap format file. After polymerization, a droplet of ethanol is dropped to remove the unnecessary remaining liquid resin and then only the polymerized figures with nano-scaled precision are remaining on the glass plate. To obtain more precise replicated features, the contour lines in voxel matrix should be modified considering a voxel size. In this study, the efficiency of the proposed method is shown through two examples in view of accuracy.

  • In this study, a new process, named as nano replication printing(nRP) process, is developed for printing any figure in the range of several micrometers by using voxel matrix scanning scheme. In this newly developed process, a femto-second laser is scanned on a photosensitive monomer resin in order to induce polymerization of the liquid resin according to a voxel matrix which is transformed from bitmap format file. After the polymerization, a droplet of ethanol is dropt to remove the unnecessary remaining liquid resin and then the polymerized figures with nano-scaled precision are only remaining on the glass plate. By the nRP process, any figure file of bitmap format could be reproduced as nano-scaled precision replication in the range of several micrometers. Also, nano/micro-scaled patterns for an extremely wide range of applications would become a technologically feasible reality. Some of figures with nano-scaled precision were printed in scaled replication as examples to prove the usefulness of this study.
