The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of multiple application of all-in-one dentin adhesive system on microtensile bond strength using confocal laser scanning microscope and microtensile bond strength test. Flat occlusal dentin surfaces were prepared using low-speed diamond saw. In group I, Scotchbond Multipurpose (SM) was applied by manufacturer's recommendation. In group II, after Adper Prompt L-Pop was applied for 15s and light cured for 10s. the second coat was re-applied and light-cured. In group III, after light-curing the second layer. the third coat was re-applied and light-cured. Specimens bonded with a resin-composite were sectioned into resin-dentin stick for measuring the adhesive layer thickness by confocal laser scanning microscope and evaluating micro-tensile bond strength. The adhesive layers of three-step dentin adhesive system. 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop had significantly thicker than SM. 2 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop (p < 0.05). However. there was no significant differences in bond strengths between SM and 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop (p > 0.05). And SM. 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop had significantly higher than 2 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop in bond strengths (p < 0.05).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various metal surface treatments and adhesive systems on the flexural bond strength of composite resin to Au-Ag-Cu-Pd alloy. The specimens were divided into nine groups by the combinations of surface treatment methods and adhesive systems. The types of surface treatment in this study were alumina blasting only, alumina blasting-Sn plating, alumina blasting-heating and three kinds of adhesive system used in this study were Silicoater system(Heraeus Kulzer GmbH,Germany), Superbond C & B(Sun Medical Co.,Ltd.,Japan) and Cesead opaque primer(Kurary Co.,Ltd.,Japan). After surface treatments and adhesive systems were applied, each specimen was built up with Dentacolor composite resin (Heraeus Kulzer GmbH,Germany). Four-point flexural bond strength was measured by Instron universal testing machine (Model 4301,U.S.A.) and modes of failure were observed by SEM(JEOL,SSM-840A,Japan). The obtained results were as follows: 1. The group that was bonded with Superbond C & B after alumina blasting-heating shelved the highest bond strength with significant difference among the groups, except the group with Cesead opaque primer after alumina blasting-Sn plating(P<0.05). 2. In the groups bonded with Cesead opaque primer, there was significant difference only in the bond strength between the alumina blasting-Sn plating group and alumina blasting group, where the former showed a higher bond strength(P<0.05). 3. In the groups bonded with Silicoater system, there were no significant differences in bond strength regardless of the surface treatment method(P<0.05). 4. In SEM evaluation, the groups of high bond strength, especially bonded with Superbond C & B after alumina blasting-heating and Cesead opaque primer after alumina blasting-Sn plating, revealed mainly cohesive-adhesive failure, whereas the others showed the tendency of adhesive failure.
Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microtensile bonds strength (${\mu}TBS$) of resin core with two adhesive systems to dentin in endodontic cavities. Materials and Methods: Flat dentinal surfaces in 40 molar endodontic cavities were treated with self-etch adhesive system, Contax (DMG) and total-etch adhesive system, Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) after the following surface treatments: (1) Priming only (Contax), (2) CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Contax), (3) Etching with priming (Adper Single Bond 2), (4) Etching + CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Adper Single Bond 2). Resin composite build-ups were made with LuxaCore (DMG) using a bulk method and polymerized for 40 sec. For each condition, half of specimens were submitted to ${\mu}TBS$ after 24 hr storage and half of them were submitted to thermocycling of 10,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ before testing. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and independent t-test at a significance level of 95%. Results: CHX pre-treatment did not affect the bond strength of specimens tested at the immediate testing period, regardless of dentin surface treatments. However, after 10,000 thermocycling, all groups showed reduced bond strength. The amount of reduction was greater in groups without CHX treatments than groups with CHX treatment. These characteristics were the same in both self-etch adhesive system and total-etch adhesive system. Conclusions: 2% CHX application for 15 sec proved to alleviate the decrease of bond strength of dentin bonding systems. No significant difference was shown in ${\mu}TBS$ between total-etching system and self-etching system.
Peel strength of epoxy adhesives can be increased by adding some amounts of XNBR. In this case, thermal resistance of the adhesive will be decreased by decrease of glass transition temperature of the adhesive. Epoxy resin modified with siloxane-imide was synthesized to improve thermal resistance and peel strength of the adhesive, after that the properties of modified epoxy resin were compared with the commercial epoxy resin. When 5% XNBR was added to 30% modified epoxy resin, this adhesive showed 0.42 N/mm of peel strength and $155^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature. These properties are enough compared to the required properties by the industry, i.e., 0.3 N/mm and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. Weight loss of the modified epoxy resin by the treatment of nitric acid and 0.1N NaOH was reduced, but weight gain by the humid condition was increased by the presence of benzene ring and imide ring. 30% modified epoxy resin blended with 5% XNBR showed 220% improvement in tensile strength and elongation compared to the case of common epoxy resin. This is due to the flexibility of the siloxane in the modified epoxy resin.
The resin : metal interface is at the basis of most bonding failures in resin-bonded prosthesis. Although debonding has been a problem with adhesive fixed partial dentures, various dentists classify them as long-term restorations. The advantages of resin-bonded fixed partial dentures include minimal tooth reduction and the possibility of rebonding. if resin-bonded protheses can be easily rebounded, it is of clinical importance to know if the lutingagents rebond as well the second time as they did originally. Several retentive systems for resin-to-metal bonding have recommended. Treatments such as electrolytic etching and silicone coating, despite the good result of bond strength, have proved to be time-consuming and technique-sensitive. Therefore a simple and more reliable method is desirable. This study evaluated the effect of metal surface treatments on the rebond strength of panavia 21 cement to a nickel-chromium(Ni-Cr) alloy. The samples were received the following surface treatments : Group No.1 (control or served as the control) treatment with sandblasting with 50um aluminum oxide and ultrasonically cleaned for 10minutes in double-deionized water, Group No.2 were no surface treatments. Group No.3 were treated with metal primer. Group No.4 were treated with sandblasting as previously described, and then metal priming. From the analysis of the results, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. Sandblasting and metal priming appears to be an effective method for treatment of metal after accidental debonding. 2. Group without surface treatment had significantly lower bond strengths compared with other groups. 3. The combination of sandblasting and metal priming may not develop superior bonding strengths compared with other techniques that used the Ni-Cr alloys. 4. Combination of cohesive and adhesive failures were the most common type observed. The results support the use of sandblasting as a viable procedure when rebonding accidentally lost adhesive partial denture. We concluded that sandblasting and metal priming of metal surface before bonding could provide the adequate bond strength during rebonding of resin-bonded fixed partial denture.
The effects of pretreatment of Co-Cr alloy, including two adhesive primers that contain either MDP or MAC-10, and silicoating on the bond The result sobtained as follows; o Strength of 4-META/MMA-TBB resin were investigated using FT-IR, SEM, and EDAX. o In the SEM observation of surface morphologies, the sandblasted specimen exibited a very rough surface, whereas the surfaces of the two groups primed with either MDP or MAC-10 were covered with a layer of primer, and the surface morphology of the silicoated specimen remained almost the same after sandblasting. o Before the thermocycling tests, the group treated with MDP demonstrated the highest mean tensile bond strength and the sandblasted group showed the lowest bond strength. o After 20,000 thermocyling, the mean tensile bond strength of the sandblasted group exhibited a 50% reduction in bond strength, while the others showed a $20\sim30%$ reduction. o Observation of the metal-resin interface revealed that in all groups the resin permeated the rough surface formed by sandblasting thereby producing a mechanical bond between the metal and the resin. It was also found that thermocycling resulted in a gap formation at the metal-resin interface of the specimens, and the sandblasted group exhibited a larger gap width than the other groups. o In fracture mode, all specimens indicated a cohesive fracture within the resin before thermocycling. However, thermocyling produced adhesive failure at the edge of the resin-metal interface in most specimens. The sandblasted group, which exhibited the lowest bond strength after thormocycling, also demonstrated the largest area of adhesive failure.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the application method of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and its influence on the adhesion of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: Sixty human mandibular premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 12), according to the canal irrigant and its application method: 2 groups with conventional syringe irrigation (CSI)-2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (control) and 2% CHX- and 3 groups with 2% CHX irrigation/activation-by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Easy Clean file, and XP-Endo Finisher file. Two roots per group were evaluated for smear layer (SL) removal by scanning electron microscopy. For other roots, fiber posts were luted using a self-adhesive resin cement. The roots were sectioned into 6 slices for push-out bond strength (BS) (7/group) and nanoleakage (NL) (3/group). Data from SL removal were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (α = 0.05). Data from BS and NL were evaluated by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: For SL removal and BS, the CHX irrigation/activation promoted better values than CSI with CHX (p < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from CSI with NaOCl (p > 0.05). For NL, the lowest values were obtained by the chlorhexidine irrigation/activation groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Active 2% CHX irrigation can be used to improve the post space cleaning and adhesion before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resin cements.
Sealing treatment is a post-surface treatment of the plasma spray coating process to improve the corrosion resistance of the coating material. In this study, the effect of the sealing on the corrosion resistance and adhesive strength of the plasma spray-coated alumina coatings was analyzed. For sealing, an epoxy resin was applied to the surface of the coated specimen using a brush. The coated specimen was subjected to a salt spray test for up to 48 hours and microstructural analysis revealed that corrosion in the coating layer/base material interface was suppressed due to the resin sealing. Measurement of the adhesive strength of the specimens subjected to the salt spray test indicated that the adhesive strength of the sealed specimens remained higher than that of the unsealed specimens. In conclusion, the resin sealing treatment for the plasma spray-coated alumina coatings is an effective method for suppressing corrosion in the coating layer/base material interface and maintaining high adhesive strength.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (${\mu}TBS$), failure modes and bonding interfaces of self-etching and three self-adhesive resin cements to dentin and indirect composite resin. Cylindrical composite blocks (Tescera, Bisco Inc.) were luted with resin cements (PA: Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray Medical Inc., RE: RelyX Unicem Clicker, 3M ESPE., MA: Maxem, Kerr Co., BI: BisCem, Bisco Inc.) on the prepared occlusal dentin surfaces of 20 extracted molars. After storage in distilled water for 24 h, $1.0\;mm\;{\times}\;1.0\;mm$ composite-dentin beams were prepared. ${\mu}TBS$ was tested at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. Dentin sides of all fractured specimens and interfaces of resin cements-dentin or resin cements-composite were examined at FESEM (Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscope). In conclusion, PA and RE showed higher bond strength and closer adaptation than MA and BI when indirect composite blocks were luted to dentin using a self-etching and three self-adhesive resin cements.
This study was performed to investigate the compatibility between 4 dentin adhesives and 4 resin luting cements. Dentin adhesives used in this study were All-Bond 2 (Bisco Inc., Schaumbrug, IL, USA), Clearfil SE-Bond (Kuraray Medical Inc, Osaka, Japan), Prompt L-Pop (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA), One-Up Bond F (Tokuyama corp., Tokyo, Japan) Resin luting cements used in this study were Choice (Bisco Inc., Schaumbrug, IL, USA), Panavia F (Kuraray Medical Inc, Osaka, Japan), RelyX ARC (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA) Bistite II DC (Tokuyama corp., Tokyo, Japan). Combination of each dentin adhesive and corresponding resin cement was made to 16 experimental groups. Flat dentin surfaces was created on mid-coronal dentin of extracted mandibular third molars, then dentin surface was polished with 320-grit silicon carbide abrasive papers. Indirect resin composite block (Tescera, Bisco) was fabricated. Its surface for bonding to tooth was polished with silicon carbide abrasive papers Each dentin adhesive was treated on tooth surface and resin composite overlay were luted with each resin cement. Each bonded specimen was poured in epoxy resin and sectioned occluso-gingivally into 1.0mm thick slab, then further sectioned into $1.0{\times}1.0mm^2$ composite-dentin beams. Microtensile bond strength was tested at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. The data were analysed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparison tests The results of this study were as follows, 2-step self-etching dentin adhesive which has additional bonding resin is more comparison than tests. self-etching dentin adhesive.
