The influence of material composition such as aggregate types, addition of supplementary cementitious materials as well as exposed temperature levels have significant impacts on concrete residual mechanical strength properties when exposed to elevated temperature. This study is based on data obtained from literature for fly ash blended concrete produced with natural and recycled concrete aggregates to efficiently develop prediction models for estimating its residual compressive strength after exposure to high temperatures. To achieve this, an extensive database that contains different mix proportions of fly ash blended concrete was gathered from published articles. The specific design variables considered were percentage replacement level of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) in the mix, fly ash content (FA), Water to Binder Ratio (W/B), and exposed Temperature level. Thereafter, a simplified mathematical equation for the prediction of concrete's residual compressive strength using Gene Expression Programming (GEP) was developed. The relative importance of each variable on the model outputs was also determined through global sensitivity analysis. The GEP model performance was validated using different statistical fitness formulas including R2, MSE, RMSE, RAE, and MAE in which high R2 values above 0.9 are obtained in both the training and validation phase. The low measured errors (e.g., mean square error and mean absolute error are in the range of 0.0160 - 0.0327 and 0.0912 - 0.1281 MPa, respectively) in the developed model also indicate high efficiency and accuracy of the model in predicting the residual compressive strength of fly ash blended concrete exposed to elevated temperatures.
This paper investigates the effects of shot peening on mechanical properties of SAE 9254, which is a spring steel used for the suspension system of automobiles. Rotary Bending Fatigue test is accomplished and the results are summarized as fellows : 1. The tensile strength and the hardness do not change so much. 2. The layer of highly residual stress is obtained by multi-stage shot peening. 3. The fatigue strength seems to be improved by residual stress. 4. The fatigue strength of un-peened and multistage shot peened material are 425 MPa and 756 MPa, respectively.
Thick-walled cylinders, such as a cannon or nuclear reactor, are autofrettaged to induce advantageous residual stresses into pressure vessels and to increase operating pressure and the fatigue lifetimes. As the autofrettage level increases, the magnitude of compressive residual stress at the bore also increases. The purpose of the present paper is to predict the accurate residual stress of SCM440 high strength steel using the Kendall model which was adopted by ASME Code. Hydraulic pressure process was applied and thick-walled cylinders were autofrettaged up to 30% overstrain levels. Electro polishing was performed to get more accurate data. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction method. The autofrettaged surface which was plastically deformed analyzed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Although there were some differences in measured residual stress and numerical, there is a tendency to agree.
The thermal residual stresses were estimated for brazed Si3N4/S.S.316 joints with Cu/Mo multi-interlayers using FEM, and their bending strengths at room temperature were measured for various interlayer configura-tions. The Cu, Mo multi-interlayer decreased the maximum residual stress in Si3N4 and caused the residual stress redistribution rsulting in the high residual stress at Mo interlayer. The stress distribution in the joints as well as the maximum residual stress in silicon nitride were found to be main factors for determining bending strengths and Weibull modulous of the joints. The bending strength of the brazed Si3N4/S.S.316 joints with specific Cu, Mo multi-interlayer system were found to be above 400 MPa.

This paper provides the prediction of ultimate longitudinal strengths of the hull girders of a very large crude carrier considering probabilistic damage extent due to collision and grounding accidents based on IMO Guidelines (2003). The probabilistic density functions of damage extent are expressed as a function of non-dimensional damage variables. The accumulated probabilistic levels of 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% are taken into account for the estimation of damage extent. The ultimate strengths have been calculated using the in-house software called Ultimate Moment Analysis of Damaged Ships which is based on the progressive collapse method, with a new convergence criterion of force vector equilibrium. Damage indices are provided for several probable heeling angles from $0^{\circ}$ (sagging) to $180^{\circ}$ (hogging) due to collision- and grounding-induced structural failures and consequent flooding of compartments. This paper proves from the residual strength analyses that the second moment of area of a damage section can be a reliable index for the estimation of the residual ultimate strength. A simple polynomial formula is also proposed based on minimum residual ultimate strengths.
In this study, the ultra high strength concrete which have 100, 150, 200MPa took the heat from 20℃ to 70 0℃ and the 0, 20% stress in normal condition's to evaluate stress-strain, residual compressive strength and thermal expansion deformation were evaluated. The heating speed of specimen was 0.77℃/min 20~50℃, 50℃ before the target temperature, and the other interval's heating speed was 1℃/min. As a result, the stress-strain curve of non-load specimen showed the liner behavior at high temperature when the specimen's strength increased more. If ultra high strength concrete got loads, its compressive strength tended to decrease different from the normal strength concrete. The thermal expansion deformation was expanded from a vitrification of quartz over 500℃. however, over the 600℃, it was shrinked because of the dehydration of the combined water.
Hardened layer and compressive residual stress created by carburized treatment effect on bending fatigue strength of gear massively. Also, shot peening treatment improves the strength of carburized gear as it does the hardness and residual stress of surface layer. In these days shot peening techniques are welcomed as one of physical improvement ways around the surface of materials. It is used widely because qualitative analysis of shot peening has become possible and surface treatment can be done with very little costs compared to other surface improvement methods. Therefore this study investigates the effect of shot peening in surface shape and bending fatigue strength after doing many kinds of shot peening treatments, then doing fatigue test and also explained characteristics of shot peening gear.
This study aims to investigate the residual strength of sandwich composites with Al honeycomb core and carbon fiber face sheets after the quasi-static indentation damage by the experimental investigation. The 3-point bending test and the edge-wise compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties. The quasi-static point load and damaged hole was applied to introduce the simulated damage on the Each damaged specimens were finally assessed by the 3-point bending test and the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the quasi-static indentation.
This paper presents push-out tests of stud shear connectors to examine their fatigue behavior for developing a new composite bridge deck system. The fifteen push-out specimens of D16 mm stud welded on 9 mm steel plate were fabricated according to Eurocode-4, and a series of fatigue endurance test and residual strength test were performed. Additionally, the stiffness and strength variations by cyclic loading were compared. The push-out test, when the stiffness reduction ratio of the specimens was 0.95 under cyclic load, resulted in the failure of the studs. The stiffness variation of the push-out specimens additionally showed that the application of cyclic loads reduced the residual strength. The fatigue strength of the shear connectors were compared with the design values specified in the Eurocode-4, ASSHTO LRFD and JSSC codes. The comparison result showed that the fatigue endurance of the specimens satisfies the design values of these codes.
