  • We propose a novel approach to measure the residual phase noise (RPN) of a photodiode (PD) based on a two-tone correlation method. Compared with the previous measurements of the RPNs of PDs, this method is more convenient in practical application. In this method, two microwave sources and other components were placed in two isolated links sharing the same PD, so the noises of them were uncorrelated. With an FFT analyzer, the uncorrelated noises could be mostly suppressed while only the RPN of the PD was preserved. Voltage-dependent nonlinearities of PDs were studied previously. In this letter, we investigate the relationship between the RPN of the PD and the bias voltage on the PD. By changing the bias voltage, the difference of the RPN can be up to 10 dB.

  • In 1995 Kimchi refrigerator was developed at first, and has used HFC-134a as refrigerant. Kimchi refrigerator has been made 1,044,694 on the basis of 2010, disposed about 160,000 per year. Although mobile air conditioning, commercial refrigerator, general refrigerator is regarded as a major source of HFC-134a, little information is available for its emission characteristics of HFC-134a. This paper addresses the fugitive emission factors of Kimchi refrigerator at use-phase and disposal-phase. The residual quantities of Korean-made fifty three waste Kimchi refrigerators were weighed using a commercial recover of refrigerants to determine the emission factors at the disposal-phase. On the other hand, the emission factors at use-phase were estimated from the residual quantities and operating times. The average residual rate of forty three scarp Kimchi refrigerators is determined to be $74.6{\pm}5.2%$. The emission factor at the use-phase is estimated to be $3.5{\pm}0.8%/yr$ as a result of using average age of 11.7 years and the average residual rate determined here. The emission factor at the disposal-phase is determined to be 31.3% after adopting 58% of the recycling rate of refrigerant reported by Recycling Center. We estimate 3.1 g/yr for the average emission quantity of HFC-134a per operating refrigerator, while 22.5 g for that per waste Kimchi refrigerator. Since the chemical compositions of refrigerant of waste Kimchi refrigerator were the same as those of new refrigerant, it is expected that the HFC-134a recovered from waste Kimchi refrigerator can be reused for refrigerant.

  • Combining dispersion-managed optical links with midway optical phase conjugation (OPC) is a possible method of compensating for optical signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effects. Although an improvement in the performance of these optical links has been reported, the fixed residual dispersion per span (RDPS) that is typically used restricts the flexibility of link configurations. Thus, in this paper, a flexible dispersion-managed link configuration, comprising artificial distributions of linearly/nonlinearly incremented RDPS, is proposed. Simulations show that a descending distribution of RDPS before the midway OPC, and an ascending distribution of RDPS after the midway OPC, gives the best artificial distribution pattern as the number of fiber spans is increased, regardless of the RDPS incrementation method.

  • Reduction of welding residual stress is very important in the railway industry, but calculating its distribution in structures is difficult because welding residual stress formation is influenced by various parameters. In this study, we developed a finite element model for simulating the repair welding process to recover a surface damaged rail, and conducted a series of parametric studies while varying the cooling rate and the duration of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the best conditions for reducing welding residual stress level. This paper presents a three-dimensional model of the repair welding process considering the phase transformation effect implemented by the ABAQUS user subroutine, and the results of parametric studies with various cooling rates and PWHT durations. We found that heat treatment significantly reduced the residual stress on the upper rail by about 170 MPa.

  • The optimal residual dispersion per span (RDPS) slope is induced through the analyses of the compensation characteristics of the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels depending on RDPS slope in the optical links with a dispersion management (DM) and an optical phase conjugation. The simulation results show that the effective launch power of WDM is more increased and the performance difference between the channels is more decreased as RDPS slope is more increased. The simulation results also show that the effective net residual dispersion (NRD) range is more increased as RDPS slope is more increased, and consequently, it is more advantageous to use the large RDPS slope for implementing the flexible optical links.

  • The optimal distribution pattern is induced in the optical link with an artificial distributions of single mode fiber (SMF) lengths and residual dispersion per span (RDPS). It is confirmed that the descending distribution of SMF length and ascending distribution of RDPS are most suitable to compensate for the distorted WDM signals, as the fiber span number is more increased. in the optical link with 10 ps/nm or -10 ps/nm the optimal net residual dispersion (NRD).

  • When connecting 6 lead wires from stator windings to the terminals of 3 phase induction motors for Y or ${\triangle}$ connection, it is feared that the polarities of windings could be reversed each other if the wire tags are lost or erased, resulting in inadmissibly high current to motors in case of starting. To protect motors against such situations, some test procedures are necessary during wire connection which need to be easy ways to electricians without particular tools except a general multi-tester and with less time-consuming in the field. This study focuses on a test measure to satisfy these requirements which is able to provide them a convenient procedure for winding polarity discrimination considering the field condition. Here, the proposed measure utilizes the residual magnetism of the rotor and checks the indication of voltage or current at windings which are induced by the residual flux of rotor when rotating it by hands with 3 stator windings connected in the form of I connection. Principle characteristics and experiment results for this method are analyzed in the view of the effectiveness and applicability for the winding polarity discrimination.

  • In this work, a possible mechanism for grain evolution in Al-Mg alloy films during thermal annealing is suggested on the basis of the phase transition and the related residual stress. Al-Mg alloy films with compositions of 14.0 and 18.0 wt% Mg content were deposited on cold-rolled steel substrates by the direct current co-sputtering method using Al and Mg targets. After the deposition, the samples were thermally annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The featureless, dense cross-sectional microstructure of the as-deposited films turned into a grainy microstructure after the thermal annealing. According to the residual stress evaluated by using the $XRD-sin2{\psi}$ technique and the phase analysis by XRD, it is likely that grains were created in order to relieve the additional accumulation of residual stress originating from the phase transition from face-centered cubic Al (${\alpha}$) to Al3Mg2 (${\beta}$) and Mg (${\delta}$) phases, suggesting interplay between the microstructure and residual stress.

  • Monolithic AlN and AlN-W composites were fabricated by pressure-less sintering at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere and the influences of tungsten phase on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investi-gated. In the fabrication of sintered specimen no additive was used. And monolithic AlN showed substantial grain growth and low relative density. AlN-W composites were fully densified and grain growths of matrix were inhibited. The densification behavior of composites were inferred to be achieved through the liquid phase sintering process such as particle-rearrangement and solutino-reprecipitation. Also the oxid phases which is expected to form liquid phases duringsintering process were detected by XRD analysis. As the tungsten volume content increases fracture strength was decreased and fracture toughness was increased. It was suppo-sed that the strength decrease of composites with tungsten content was due to existence of interface phases. The subcritical crack growth behavior was observed from the stress-strain curve of composites. The effect of the secondary phase and interface phases on toughness in crease were studied through observation of crack propagation path and the influence of residual stress on crack propagation was investigated by X-ray residual stress measurement. In the result of residual stress measurement the compressive stress of matrix in composi-test was increased with tungsten volume content and the compressive stress distribution of matrix must have contributed to the inhibition of crack propagation.
