It is very improtant to evaluate the reliable nonlinear deformational characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. Field testings such as crosshole and pressuremeter tests can be used to determine the modulus of soils under in-situ conditions, but it is not possible to determine the modulus over the entire strain amplitude range. Laboratory methods such as resonant column 1 torsional shear test can be used to determine the modulus over the whole strain amplitude range, but it is very difficult to obtain the representative undisturbed samples on the sixte. For the reliable evaluation of nonlinear deformation characteristics of soils on a typical site, small strain modulus obtained from field testy and nomalized modulus reduction curve determined by laboratory bests need to be combined. In this paper, laboratory and Held testy were performed at a sixte which consisted of granite wearthered residual boils to evaluate the nonlinear deformational characteristics of coils such as the effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, confining pressure and sample disturbance. It has been shorn that when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account, the stiffness values evaluated by various field and labrotary tests are comparable to each other fairly well. Finally, the procedure to evaluate the nonlinear deformstional characteristics of the sixte was proposed.

Currently, the efficiency of GPS has been increased in the various precise survey like as the control survey and the navigation etc. Also, it is widely used in the deformation analysis of the structure, the measurement of the marine tides, the measurement of the river level and the topographic monitoring of seabed or riverbed by combined the measurement equipment for depth. In this study, we intend to increase in efficiency of the topographic monitoring of seabed or riverbed by combined with DGPS, RTK GPS and echo sounder. For this study, we defined the error correction of the echo sounder with the experiment of water tank which is considered the characteristic of estuary riverbed and then we developed the s/w for 3-dimensional monitoring of estuary riverbed and applied the s/w to field test and improved the various problems. On analyzing topography of estuary riverbed by combined GPS with echo sounder, the draught error which is yielded to change of length from the water surface by the movement of survey vessel to the end of the transducer was eliminated by geometrical rearrangement and we defined the correction formula $z=BM+SAH-DBR_{(i)}-DRT-ED$. The sounding error about the echo sounder and characteristic of estuary riverbed was found by understanding the relation of average diameter ind residual error and we defined correction formula, $Y=0.00474{\ast}ln(X)-0.0045$ by the regression analysis. and then we verified applicability of correction formula.

In the case of the seabed around and under gravity structures such as submerged breakwater is exposed to a large wave action long period, the excess pore pressure will be significantly generated due to pore volume change associated with rearrangement soil grains. This effect will lead a seabed liquefaction around and under structures as a result of the decrease in the effective stress, and eventually the possibility of structure failure will be increased. The study of liquefaction potential for regular waves had already done, and this study considered for irregular waves with the same numerical analysis method used for regular waves. Under the condition of the irregular wave field, the time and spatial series of the deformation of submerged breakwater, the pore water pressure (oscillatory and residual components) and pore water pressure ratio in the seabed were estimated and their results were compared with those of the regular wave field to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed quantitatively. Although present results are based on a limited number of numerical simulations, one of the study's most important findings is that a safer design can be obtained when analyzing case with a regular wave condition corresponding to a significant wave of the irregular wave.

Background: This study aims to evaluate whether or not the method of right vertical axillary minithoracotomy (RVAM) is preferable to and as reliable as conventional sternotomy surgery, and also assesses its cosmetic results. Methods: Thirty-three patients (7 males, 26 females) with atrial septal defect were admitted to the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic of Cukurova University from December 2005 until January 2010. The patients' ages ranged from 3 to 22. Patients who underwent vertical axillary minithracotomy were assigned to group I, and those undergoing conventional sternotomy, to group II. Group I and group II were compared with regard to the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative variables. Group I included 12 females and 4 males with an average age of $16.5{\pm}9.7$. Group II comprised 14 female and 3 male patients with an average age of $18.5{\pm}9.8$ showing similar features and pathologies. The cases were in Class I-II according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Classification, and patients with other cardiac and systemic problems were not included in the study. The ratio of the systemic blood flow to the pulmonary blood flow (Qp/Qs) was $1.8{\pm}0.2$. The average pulmonary artery pressure was $35{\pm}10$ mmHg. Following the diagnosis, performing elective surgery was planned. Results: No significant difference was detected in the average time of the patients' extraportal circulation, cross-clamp and surgery (p>0.05). In the early postoperative period of the cases, the duration of mechanical ventilator support, the drainage volume in the first 24 hours, and the hospitalization time in the intensive care unit were similar (p>0.05). Postoperative pains were evaluated together with narcotic analgesics taken intravenously or orally. While 7 cases (43.7%) in group I needed postoperative analgesics, 12 cases (70.6%) in group II needed them. No mortality or major morbidity has occurred in the patients. The incision style and sizes in all of the patients undergoing RVAM were preserved as they were at the beginning. Furthermore, the patients of group I were mobilized more quickly than the patients of group II. The patients of group I were quite pleased with the psychological and cosmetic results. No residual defects have been found in the early postoperative period and after the end of the follow-up periods. All of the patients achieved functional capacity per NYHA. No deformation of breast growth has been detected during 18 months of follow-up for the group I patients, who underwent RVAM. Conclusion: To conclude, the repair of atrial septal defect by RVAM, apart from the limited working zone for the surgeon in these pathologies as compared to sternotomymay be considered in terms of the outcomes, and early and late complications. And this has accounted for less need of analgesics and better cosmetic results in recent years.
Ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is characterized by a post-cracking residual tensile strength with a large tensile strain as well as a high compressive strength. To determine a material tensile strength of UHPFRC, three-point loading test on notched prism and direct tensile test on doubly notched plate were compared and then the design tensile strength is decided. Shear tests on nine I-shaped beams with varied types of fiber volume ratio, shear span ratio and size effect were conducted to investigate shear behavior in web. From the test results, the stress redistribution ability represented as diagonal cracked zone was quantified by inclination of principal stress in web. The test results shows that the specimens were capable of resistance to shear loading without stirrup in a range of large deformation and the strength increase with post-cracking behavior is stable. However at the ultimate state all test specimens failed as a crack localization in the damaged zone and the shear strength of specimens is affected by shear span ratio and effective depth. Strength predictions show that the existing recommendations should be modified considering shear span ratio and effective depth as design parameters.

The purpose of this study is to enhance the seismic performance of exposed column-base plate weak-axis connections for small-sized steel buildings. According to the site inspection for the small-sized building construction, the arbitrary connection details in steel buildings have been applied at the job site, which is considered to be insufficient to guarantee structural safety and stability considering the increased seismic risk in Korea. Therefore, a series of test programs had been done to develop enhanced connection details in order to ensue the adequate seismic stability and safety of small-sized steel buildings. From the test results, It was found that the exposed column-base plate weak-axis connections commonly used in Korea shows very poor seismic behavior due to the "Rocking" phenomena caused by the residual plastic deformation of anchor bolts between anchor plate and concrete. A series of hysteretic tests for finding that solution were conducted to reduce the "Rocking" phenomena of the column-base plate connections, and local buckling of webs in H-column. Finally the enhanced stable seismic behavior was obtained by reinforcing at least 8 anchor bolts with good bonding strength and stiffeners to the webs in H-column.
The existence of different thermodynamic properties results in various undesirable effects, such as thermal deformation and residual stress, in heat-welding processes. The solid-state junction, by using explosive or electromagnetic forces, i.e., high-velocity impact welding without employing heat is advantageous in joining materials with different thermodynamic properties. In the solid-state junction, the joining is performed within a short time, a high velocity and large deformations are accompanied by interfacial surfaces. The numerical analysis models play an important role in the understanding of the mechanism of high-velocity impact welding. However, in the analysis of high velocity and large deformations, the conventional Lagrangian method has low reliability due to the occurrence of entanglements. In this study, high-velocity impact welding between Cu and CP-Ti with different thermodynamic properties was performed using a un-gridded numerical method, SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics), and interfacial morphology occurred. As a result of the analysis, the interfacial morphology was confirmed and the compared degree of shape (straight, vortex), period, length, and so on appeared differently depending on the relationship between the parameters (impact angle and speed).
Recently, the intensive rainstorm possibly induced by global warming plays a key role on the instability of railway adjacent slopes. The instability of slopes results as covering and loss of railway lines induced by slided soil mass. According to the site investigation on the failed slopes triggered by rainfall, low types of slope failure were observed: shallow, intermediate, gully erosion, and soil-rock interface failures. The observation reveals the different characteristics of slope failure depending on the thickness of soil layer, morphological features of slope, etc. Based upon the observations, flume tests were conducted to analyze the sliding mechanism of each failure. The variables of flume test are soil layer thickness, rainfall intensity, and morphology of slope under the constant condition of the percentage of fine, initial soil moisture content, slope angle and compaction energy. Test results show that shallow failure was mostly observed from the surface of the slope and caused by the soil erosion; in addition, compared to the other types of failure, the occurrence of initial erosion is late, however, the development of erosion is fast. In gully erosion failure, the collected water from the water catchment area helps erosion of the upper soil layer and transfer of residual corestone, which impedes the erosion process once the upper soil layers are eroded and corestone are exposed. The soil-rock interface failure shows the most fast initial erosion process among the failure types. Interestingly, the common feature observed from the different types of failure was the occurrence of the initial deformation near the toe of slopes which implies the existence of surbsurface flow along the downslope direction.

With the continuous industrial development, not only natural resource depletion, waste generation, but also various weather conditions are becoming more frequent. Efforts are continuing to recycle industrial by-products to overcome the climate crisis and save resources. Slag is a representative by-product generated in the steel industry, and it is characterized by improving rutting resistance and moisture sensitivity by increasing strength and reducing deformation when used as a material for asphalt concrete. On the other hand, slag has expansion properties so it is used as a relatively low-value-added material such as embankment and refilling materials. In order to expand the application of slag, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the crack resistance of slag asphalt concrete pavement. As a result of the indirect tensile strength test, it was found that the asphalt mixture using slag aggregate showed a value 1.13 times higher than that of the general HMA with the same particle size, and the toughness was 1.17 units, improving crack resistance. In addition, it was found that the failure number of the 4-point beam fatigue experiment and the slag asphalt mixture was 20,409, which was more than doubled compared to the general HMA. Furthermore, Overlay Test showed a tensile load residual rate of 4 times or more, improving crack resistance to repeated fatigue. Accordingly, the use of slag aggregate will likely have various advantages in improving the performance of asphalt concrete pavement.

Seabed beneath and near coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using the expanded 2-dimensional numerical wave tank to account for an irregular wave field. In the condition of an irregular wave field, the dynamic wave pressure and water flow velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the composite breakwater structure were estimated. Simulation results were used as input data in a finite element computer program for elastoplastic seabed response. Simulations evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress, and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the results of the analysis, the liquefaction potential at the seabed in front and rear of the composite breakwater was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance to force, scour potential could increase on the seabed. In addition, the strength decrease of the seabed due to the liquefaction can increase the structural motion and significantly influence the stability of the composite breakwater. Due to limitations of allowable paper length, the studied results were divided into two portions; (I) focusing on the dynamic response of structure, acceleration, deformation of seabed, and (II) focusing on the time variation in excess pore water pressure, liquefaction, effective stress path in the seabed.
