  • Design codes have specified the minimum shear reinforcement requirement for reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PSC) members to prevent brittle and premature shear failure. They are, however, very different from one another, and particularly, ACI318 code allows the required minimum shear reinforcement to be reduced in PSC members, compared to that in RC members, by specifying the additional equation for PSC members whose basis is not clear. In this paper, the minimum shear reinforcement ratio for PSC members was proposed, which can provide a sufficient reserved shear strength and deformation capacity. The proposed equation was also verified by the test results of PSC specimens lightly reinforced in shear, comparing to design codes and other proposed equations from previous studies.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the shear capacity of high-strength lightweight-aggregate reinforced concrete beams subjected to monotonic loading. Ten beams made of fly-ash artificial lightweight high-strength concrete were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variables in the test program were longitudinal reinforcement ratio; which variabled (between 0.83 and 1.66 percent), shear span-to-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.5 and 3.5), and web reinforcement(0, 0.137, 0.275 and 0.554 percent). Six of the test beams had no web reinforcement and the other six had web reinforcement along the entire length of the beam. Most of beams failed brittly by distinct diagonal shear crack, and have reserved shear strength due to the lack of additional resisting effect by aggregate interlocking action after diagonal cracking. Test results indicate that the ACI Building Code predictions of Eq. (11-3) and (11-5) for lightweight concretes are unconservative for beams with tensile steel ratio of 1.66, a/d ratios greater than 2.5 without web reinforcement. Through a more rational approach to compute the contribution of concrete to the shear capacity, a postcracking shear strength in concrete is observed.

  • Th~s paper presents the shear behavior in reinforced normal, medium and high strength con crete beams due to the Increase of concrete compressive strength. Twelve shear tests were con ducted on full scale beam speclrnerls havmg concrete compressive stlengths of 360, 670 and 873kg/$cm^2$. Different amounts of shear reinforcement as a variable were investigated according to ACI 318 89. The shear responses are discussed in terms of the shear capacity. the ductility and the reserved strength. The prediction and comparison with the test results are also presented.

  • This is an experimental investigation the shear behavior of reinforced concrete with stirrup of which stress ranges 0.0㎏/㎠ to 7.0㎏/㎠. Five rectangular beams which concrete strengths are 287㎏/㎠ and 380㎏/㎠, a/d=3, and main steel ratio equal to 1.96% was tested. Those were designed to fail in shear. The shear cracking load and failure load were measured and compared with ACI's equation and Zutty's proposed equation. The results are following : ACI equation and Zutty's equation are consertive. As the concrete compressive strength increased, reserved shear strength of beams with minimum web reinforcement decreases. According to increase of web reinforcement , the rate of increases of shear strength is decreased. The failure modes of specimen with minimum web reinforcement are shear compression failure which is reached after diagonal shear cracking.

  • This paper develops practical and realistic reliability models and methods for the evalusion of system reliability and system reliability-based rating of R.C box-girder bridge superstructures. The precise prediction of reserved carrying capacity of bridge as a system is extremely difficult expecially when the bridges are highly redundant and significantly deteriorated or damaged. This paper proposes a new approach for the evaluation of reserved system carrying capacity of bridges in terms of equivalent system-strength, which may be defined as a bridge system-strength corresponding to the system reliability of the bridge. This can be derived from an inverse process based on the concept of FOSM form of system reliability index. The strength limit state models for R.C box-girder bridges suggested in the paper are based on the basic bending and shear strength. and the system reliability problem of box-girder superstructure is formulated as parallel-series models obtained from the FMA(Failure Mode Approach) based on major failure mechanism or critical failure states of each girder. AFOSM and IST(Importance Sampling Technique) simulation algorithm is used for the reliability analysis of the proposed models.

  • A strut-and-tie model is introduced in this paper to predict the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns. The validity and applicability of the proposed strut-and-tie model are evaluated by comparison with available experimental data. The model was developed based on visible crack patterns observed on the test specimens. The concrete contribution is integrated into the strut-and-tie model through a concept of equivalent transverse reinforcement. To further validate the model a full-scale non-seismically detailed reinforced concrete column was tested to investigate its seismic behavior. The specimen was tested under the combination of a constant axial load, $0.30f_c{^{\prime}}A_g$ and quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions. Quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions were applied to the specimen until it could not sustain the applied axial load. The analytical results reveal that the strut-and-tie method is capable of modeling to a satisfactory accuracy the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns subjected to reserved cyclic loadings.

  • The present research reports the application of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) as an alternative to conventional concrete to improve the seismic behavior of short columns. Experimental and finite element investigation was conducted by testing five reinforced engineered cementitious composite (RECC) concrete columns (half-scale specimens) and one control reinforced concrete (RC) specimen for different shear-span and transverse reinforcement ratios under cyclic lateral loads. RECC specimens with higher shear-span and transverse reinforcement ratios demonstrated a significant effect on the column lateral load behavior by improving ductility (>5), energy dissipation capacity (1.2 to 4.1 times RC specimen), gradual strength degradation (ultimate drift >3.4%), and altering the failure mode. The self-confinement effect of ECC fibers maintained the integrity in the post-peak region and reserved the transmission of stress through fibers without noticeable degradation in strength. Finite element modeling of RECC specimens under monotonic incremental loads was carried out by adopting simplified constitutive material models. It was apprehended that the model simulated the global response (strength and stiffness) and damage crack patterns reasonably well.

  • This paper develops practical and realistic reliability models and methods for the evaluation of system-reliability and system reliability-based rating of various types of box-girder bridge superstructures. The strength limit state model for box-girder bridges suggested in the paper are based on not only the basic flexural strength but also the strength interaction equations which simultaneously take into account flexure, shear and torsion. And the system reliability problem of box-girder superstructure is formulated as parallel-series models obtained from the FMA(Failure Mode Approach) based on major failure mechanisms or critical failure states of each girder. In the paper, an improved IST(Importance Sampling Technique) simulation algorithm is used for the system reliability analysis of the proposed models. This paper proposes a practical but rational approach for the evaluation of capacity rating in terms of the equivalent system-capacity rating corresponding to the estimated system-reliability index which is derived based on the concept of the equivalent FOSM(First Order Second Moment) form of system reliability index. The results of the reliability evaluation and rating of existing bridges indicate that the reserved reliability and capacity rating at system level are significantly different from those of element reliability or conventional methods especially in the case of highly redundant box-girder bridges.
