  • Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the research trends in herbal medicine as a treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD) in an animal model. Methods We conducted a search targeting papers published from 2013 onwards in Korean and English databases. The search terms were focused on "AD", "dermatitis", and "Korean medicine". Only animal experimental studies involving the oral administration of single or complex prescriptions of Korean medicine were included, whereas in vitro studies, local administration studies, and studies of specific components of Korean medicine were excluded. We searched the PubMed and Embase databases for English databases and the Science on Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) and Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS) databases for Korean studies. Results Among the herbal medicine intervention groups, the most commonly used single herbs were baekseonpi, danggui, and douchi, whereas a mixture of hwangryun and gamcho was used in three studies, making it the most frequently used combination. There were significant improvements in indicators related to the symptoms of AD and various pro-inflammatory markers. Conclusions These results indicate the efficacy of herbal medicines in the treatment of AD in animal models. However, this study had several limitations. Therefore, future systematic reviews that address these limitations and provide more comprehensive analyses are required.

Causes of scoliosis were very various, but the patients are due to idiopathic reasons. Scoliosis was treated by conservative treatment or surgery treatment. If scoliosis is diagnosed early enough, it can be treated with conservative treatment. Methods We are searching PubMed by keywords and found 47 theses complied with requirements. Results Studies of conservative treatment of Scoliosis were active. Conservative treatments are considered before surgery treatment and there was a set guideline of conservative treatment. Also, there were several studies about effectiveness of conservative treatment and quality of life, mental stress. Studies about various kinds of conservative treatment were found as well. There were brief studies about introduction of new brace, effectiveness of several braces, and case studies. Conclusions Conservative treatment is very effective choice before surgery treatment at Scoliosis patient.

This study was conducted to help clinical studies for treating COPD with Oriental medicine. Materials and Methods : We inspected 31 theses and scrutinized their objectives, periods, participants, materials and methods, methods of assessment, results and Jadad score. Results : The treatments in the studies were supplements, physical training, acupuncture, acu-TENS, Bojungikgi-tang (Buzhongyiqi-tang), counseling, breathing training, osteopathic manipulative treatment, reflexology, and distractive auditory stimuli. The aims of treatment were improvement of exercise capacity, lung function, quality of life, oxidative status, nutrient status, systemic inflammation, and cessation of smoking. The median for treatment period of study was 8 weeks, the median number of participants was 35 and the differences between mean $FEV_1$ from groups were less than 10% in 22 studies. The methods of assessment were lung function test, exercise capacity test, muscle strength test, questionnaire of QoL, laboratory studies, and measurement of nutrient state. The mean of Jadad score was $2.4\;{\pm}\;1.03$, and 24 treatment were assessed as effective. Conclusion : Recent CAM studies of COPD have focused on various topics in alternative and complementary medicine, and it is necessary to provide objective studies for treatment of this disease with Oriental medicines.

Methods 6 Korean databases were searched for articles of oriental obesity pattern identification, irrespective of publication year and 13 studies were reviewed. An analytical method such as descriptive statistics and an actual number and percentage was used. Results We collected 13 studies. 4 studies were published in 2012 and 2008, the highest number of studies. 7 Clinical studies were the major research method. The Studies were classified according to the characteristics and design. 5 studies were about research of analysis and improvement of oriental obesity pattern identification questionnaire, the most number of studies. 4 studies were about research of observational studies in clinical on obesity pattern identification. 3 studies were about research of intervention studies in clinical on obesity pattern identification and 1 study was about clinical practice recommendation. Conclusions Establishment of obesity pattern identification system and its clinical application could lead to standardizing obesity pattern identification and clinical practice guideline. Applied on other diseases, obesity pattern identification system could also lead to improving treatment rate, contributing to the development of clinical practice guidelines and academic field of research.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to review the current Sasang constitutional research on obesity and to provide basic data for further development in the direction of better research. Methods Clinical research articles on obesity of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine were extracted from five database. Published year, published journals, and subjects of studies were classified. Clinical methods for the classification of Sasang type and diagnostic criteria for obesity were summarized. Results A total of 36 selected research articles were published from 1998 to 2020. And 20 articles(55.6%) have been published in Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Journal of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine. Most of the clinical study subjects were studies that identified independent factors that were correlated with obesity by Sasang constitution type. But these studies have not sufficiently reflected the distinctive characteristics of Sasang Constitution Medicine. Discussion Through this study, it was confirmed to the necessity of developing new research designs for obesity by Sasang constitution and researching on obesity treatment through improvement of symptoms by using the already developed questionnaires that have proven reliability and validity, away from the research biased towards Taeeumin and Taeeumin's prescription. If additional research based on this study is accompanied, it is expected that it can be utilized in typed obesity treatment fields.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Methods: Studies were searched through The China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. The search term for the subject were 'Eating Disorder', and 'Anorexia Nervosa'. Clinical research that conducted TCM treatment for AN patients were included. Studies were analyze according to study design, therapy method, diagnostic criteria, population and intervention. Results: 23 articles were selected. According to study design, studies were classified into two randomized controlled trial (RCT), three single group before-and-after studies, and 18 case reports. According to therapy method, they included 19 herbal medicine studies, two acupuncture treatment studies, and two complex treatment studies. The most common pattern identification was 'liver depression with spleen deficiency' (肝鬱脾虛), and the most used herb was 'Root of Bupleurum falcatum' (柴胡). Most of the studies showed effective results in increasing appetite and weight. Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrate that TCM treatments for AN has been effective in alleviating chief symptoms. However, in terms of evidence-based medicine, lack of RCT on TCM treatments for AN and absence of objective diagnostic criteria in case reports are limitations. Therefore well-designed further clinical studies should be performed based on the results of this study are recommended.
