Study of changes in the kinetic parameters of corrosion on the macrocell current induced by the repair of reinforced concrete structures - Results of numerical simulation

  • Corrosion of reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete structures due to chloride attack in environments containing chloride ions is one of the most important factors in the destruction of concrete structures. According to the abundant reports that the corrosion rate around the repair area has increased due to the macro-cell current known as the incipient anode, it is necessary to understand the effective parameters. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of the kinetic parameters of corrosion including the cathodic Tafel slope, exchange current density, and equilibrium potential in repair materials on the total corrosion rate and maximum corrosion rate in the patch repair system. With the numerical simulation of the patch repair system and concerning the effect of parameters such as electromotive force (substrate concrete activity level), length of repair area, and resistivity of substrate and repair concrete, and with constant other parameters, the sensitivity of the macro-cell current caused by changes in the kinetic parameters of corrosion of the repairing materials has been investigated. The results show that the maximum effect on the macro-cell current values occurred with the change of cathodic Tafel slope, and the effect change of exchange current density and the equilibrium potential is almost the same. In the low repair extant and low resistivity of the repairing materials, with the increase in the electromotive force (degree of substrate concrete activity) of the patch repair system, the sensitivity of the total corrosion current reduces with the reduction in the cathode Tafel slope. The overall corrosion current will be very sensitive to changes in the kinetic parameters of corrosion. The change in the cathodic Tafel slope from 0.16 to 0.12 V/dec and in 300 mV the electromotive force will translate into an increase of 200% of the total corrosion current. While the percentage of this change in currency density and equilibrium potential is 53 and 43 percent, respectively. Moreover, by increasing the electro-motive force, the sensitivity of the total corrosion current decreases or becomes constant. The maximum corrosion does not change significantly based on the modification of the corrosion kinetic parameters and the modification will not affect the maximum corrosion in the repair system. Given that the macro-cell current in addition to the repair geometry is influenced by the sections of reactions of cathodic, anodic, and ohmic drop in repair and base concrete materials, in different parameters depending on the dominance of each section, the sensitivity of the total current and maximum corrosion in each scenario will be different.

Replacement Policies Based on System Age and Random Repair Cost under Imperfect Repair

  • Replacement policies based on both the system age and the random repair cost are studied. The system is replaced when it reaches age T (Policy A), or when it fails for the first time after age T (Policy B). If the system fails before age T, the repair cost is estimated and repair is then undertaken if the estimated cost is less than a predetermined limit L ; otherwise, the system is replaced. After repair, the system is as good as new with probability (1-p) or is as good as old with probability P. The expected cost rate is obtained, its behavior is examined, and way of obtaining optimal T and L is explored.

  • This article is concerned with cost analysis in stepdown warranty policy. The repair of item is divided into two policies. First, perfect repair can be considered that the failurerate is the same as new item. Second, minimal repair is shown that the failurerate is the same as just before the item failure In this paper, the minimal repair model is introduced. And it is assumed that manufacturers repair the item failure within the warranty periodn. But warranty period is not renewed at all. At this point the warranty cost is analyzed in manufacturer's and customer's point of view.

Post-Damage Repair of Prestressed Concrete Girders

  • Concrete is an economical construction material and for that reason it is widely used in buildings and infrastructures. The use of deicing salts, expansion joint failure, and freeze-thaw cycles have led to concrete bridge girders experiencing corrosion of steel reinforcement and becoming unsafe for driving. The goal of this research is to assess the effectiveness of current and possible repair techniques for the end region of damaged prestressed concrete girders. To do this, three American Association of State Highway and Transportation prestressed concrete girders were tested to failure, repaired, and retested. Three different repair materials were tested including carbon fiber, glass fiber, and surface mounted rods. Each different repair material was also tested with and without injected epoxy. Comparisons were then made to determine if injecting epoxy had a positive effect on stiffness and strength recovery as well as which repair type regained the largest percentage of original strength.

A study on management and judgement of defect-repair in private housing construction company (민간 주택건설회사의 하자보수에 대한 인식 및 실태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a defect-repair management and judgement of apartment housing for the private housing construction company. The objectives are : 1) to investigate how the defect-repair were managed and 2) to suggest the range, period of defect-repair and the proper managial size of housing company. Data were collected by the interviews from the heads of management departments of housing construction companies. Twenty-one companies selected were divided into three groups according to the amount of housing supply. Major result were as follows : 1) departments of defect-repair in housing construction company are divided into sub-system according to the size of housing supply. 2) the judgement of the range and period of defect-repair are extracted. They are, according to the order of their importance, constructional defect, functional defect, aesthetical defect and the defect in use.

  • In many cases, it is more practical and economical to repair a system than to replace the whole system or to perform a complete overhaul when it fails. The age replacement policy with minimal repair at failure is considered. The system is replaced every time its age reaches at $T_0$. For each intervening failure only minimal repair is done. The minimal repair times in a renewal period are increasing in the sense that the minimal repair times constitute a strictly increasing geometric process. The long-run expected cost rate Is obtained and the properties of the existence and the uniqueness of the optimal policy minimizing the long-run expected cost rate are derived.

Collaborative Effect of CuZnSOD and Human AP Endonuclease against Oxidative Stress

  • The defenses against free radical damage include specialized repair enzymes that correct oxidative damages in DNA, and detoxification systems such as superoxide dismutases. These defenses may be coordinated genetically as global responses. We hypothesized that the expression of the SOD and the DNA repair genes would inhibit DNA damage under oxidative stress. Therefore, the protection of E. coli mutants deficient in SOD and DNA repair genes $(sod^-\;xth^-\;and\;nfo^-)$ was demonstrated by transforming the mutant strain with a plasmid pYK9 which encoded Photobacterium leiognathi CuZnSOD and human AP endonuclease. The results show that survival rates were increased in $sod^+\;xth^-\;nfo^+$ cells compared to $sod^-\;xth^-\;ap^+,\;sod^-\;xth^-\;ap^-,\;and\;sod^+\;xth^-\;ap^-$ cells under oxidative stress generated from 0.1 mM Paraquat or 3 mM $H_2O_2$. The data suggested that, at least, SOD and DNA repair enzymes may have collaborate protection and repair of the damaged DNA. Additionally, both enzymes are required for protection against free radicals.

  • The compatibility of concrete repairs is proposed by D. Cusson et al. and N. K. Emberson et al. But this is the general compatibility of concrete repairs. This study is actualized the general compatibility of concrete repairs on the flexural specimen under bending load. This study is obtained following results. 1) As a results of analysis for repair effects on failure shape, debonding between concrete and repairs, yielding load and ultimate/yielding ratio, the repair effects is ascertained that the repair R3 is much excellent than the repair R7, but on the other hand R7 is very high than R3 on the viewpoint of compressive strength, where repair R7, R3 is a product. 2) Therefore the compatibility of concrete repair proposed by D. Cusson et al. and N. K. Emberson et al. must be reanalyzed for structures types of column, beam, wall, slab et al.

  • Repair of concrete structures has been a focus of attention in recent years not only in Japan but also worldwide. Concrete structures have fallen short of expectations at the time of construction-they should have been perpetual and maintenance-free. However, investigation into their premature deterioration reveals the primary causes: Concrete was made using inadequate materials and/or inadequate mixture proportions due to insufficient consideration and was placed inadequately under insufficient execution control. The secondary causes include insufficient consideration at the time of construction for the environmental conditions to which the structures were to be exposed. In any event, in the current economic climate, structures cannot be demolished and rebuilt as soon as they are damaged, but instead are expected to continue to be in service as long as possible with appropriate repair or retrofitting. This paper analyzes the causes of deterioration requiring repair and introduces relevant repair techniques. At the end, the repair project of the Sanyo Shinkansen Line in which the author was involved through committee activities is reported.

New Retear Pattern after Rotator Cuff Repair at Previous Intact Portion of Rotator Cuff

  • Retear patterns after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair are classified into two patterns according to retear location. Type 1 is when the retear pattern occurs directly on the tendon at the bone repair site using the suture anchor repair method. Type 2 is when the retear pattern occurs at the musculocutaneous junction with a healed footprint in patients who undergo the suture bridge method. Here, the authors report another retear pattern, which was identified as a type 2 retear on magnetic resonance imaging in patients who had undergone arthroscopic rotator cuff repair by the suture-bridge technique. This pattern was different from the type 2 retear and occurred at the portion of the cuff away from the healed rotator cuff under the view of the arthroscope.
