A Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) is a regulation that requires the increased generation of energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, fuel cell, small hydro, biomass and geothermal. By environmental, technical and these regulatory reasons, the amount of renewable energy sources will be increased in a network. However, it is hard to assess risk of a transmission network with large scale renewable energy sources because the output characteristics of renewable energies are intermittent. This paper evaluates effects of a transmission system with supplemental large scale renewable energies into the existing system. To evaluate these effects, a methodology for risk level of components in a network is proposed considering steady state and contingency N-1 in this paper. We consider line current and bus voltage in each state of a network.
This paper, focusing on the renewable portfolio standard (RPS), evaluates alternative renewable energy policies. We propose a tractable equilibrium model which provides a structural representation of Korea's electricity market, including its energy settlement system and renewable energy certificate (REC) transactions. Arbitrage conditions are used to define the core value of REC prices to identify relevant competitive equilibrium conditions. The model considers R&D investments and learning effects that may affect the development of renewable energy technologies. The model is parameterized to represent the baseline scenario under the currently scheduled RPS reinforcement for a 20% share of renewable generation, and then simulated for alternative scenarios. The result shows that the reinforcement of the RPS leads to higher welfare compared to weakening it as well as repealing it, though there remains room to enhance welfare. It turns out that subsidies are welfare-inferior to the RPS due to financial burdens and that reducing nuclear power generation from the baseline yields lower welfare by worsening environmental externalities.
The world is facing environmental problem described as climate change and exhaustion of fossil fuel. In order to solve theses problems, importance of renewable energy is extremely growing. For stable energy supply, it is need to apply hybrid renewable energy systems in urban-scale, because some renewable energy system' outputs are greatly influenced by climatic condition. Especially, solar irradiation and wind velocity are influenced by urban geometric environment as well as climatic condition. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate the renewable energy potential according as urban form. This study aims to evaluate the potential of solar energy and wind energy in urban-scale and classify urban type according as characteristics of urban forms. The results of this study will be used to develop renewable energy system application guidelines for urban and energy planning.
When the RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standards) becomes effective in 2012, the use of renewable energy will be dramatically increased. However, there are no production simulations and demand supply programs that reflect the characteristics of the renewable energy. This paper analyzes correlations of the domestic wind power and solar power generation pattern in different areas and those of these sources' output and load pattern. Based on the regional correlation analysis, an appropriate method that uses a average output of the renewable energy or another modeling that takes account of uncertainty could be selected. Because it's output is dependent on weather condition, we can not control the generation of renewable energy, that is the reason why the correlation between the load and output pattern of sources can be helpful to determine whether the renewable energy is modeled as a generator or load modifier. Through this analysis, a basis will be provided in order to properly model the renewable energy source.
Recently, various renewable systems have been developed and applied in Korea. However, there are many systems which were not utilized in real buildings or not widely spread in the market. Furthermore, the attention of most users focused on several certain system such as PV or solar system. Therefore, this research aims to find user's needs for renewable energy based on perception surveys to improve the acceptance of technology in line with the world's energy flow. The survey was conducted by classifying respondents by various criteria, and the results were analyzed using AHP technique and CVM technique, focusing on preference and acceptance. According to the results of the survey, it was found that the people felt the need for renewable energy but lacked knowledge about renewable energy compared to the various government-implemented renewable energy supply policies. Therefore, a government-level policy is needed so that the people can have universal knowledge about renewable energy system.
Comparative evaluation of offshore wind retreival software, which use the satellite images taken by Synthetic Aperture Radar sensor; SARTools of CLS-SOPRONO, France and SpaceEye of London Research and Development Corporation, Canada is carried out. For a reference satellite image, ENVISAT ASAR imagery of Jeollanam-do Wan-do area when the winter-time northwestern wind prevails is processed by CMOD_IFR2, CMOD4, CMOD5 algorithms. Wind speed difference and its relative ratio are calculated to evaluate uncertainty of software selection.
Recently the renewable energy has been used widely and the importance of renewable sources is bigger than before. So the government enforced a law to the public buildings to install the renewable energy facilities. The capacity of facilities is 5% of total construction cost until April 13, 2011. Since then, the government changed the law from 5% of total construction cost to 10% of predicted energy usage because of the practical use of the renewable energy facilities. So, in this study, the comparative analysis is conducted according to the law to the building installed PV system through the EnergyPlus simulation.
An interconnect is the key component of solid oxide fuel cells that electrically connects unit cells and separates fuel from oxidant in the adjoining cells. To improve their surface stability in high-temperature oxidizing environments, metallic interconnects are usually coated with conductive oxides. In this study, lanthanum nickelates ($LaNiO_3$) with a perovskite structure are synthesized and applied as protective coatings on a metallic interconnect (Crofer 22 APU). The partial substitution of Co, Cu, and Fe for Ni improves electrical conductivity as well as thermal expansion match with the Crofer interconnect. The protective perovskite layers are fabricated on the interconnects by a slurry coating process combined with optimized heat-treatment. The perovskite-coated interconnects show area-specific resistances as low as $16.5-37.5m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$.
We address the power generation mix problem that considers not only nuclear and fossil fuels such as oil, coal and LNG but also renewable energy technologies. Unlike nuclear or other generation technologies, the expansion plan of renewable energy is highly uncertain because of its dependency on the government policy and uncertainty associated with technology improvements. To address this issue, we conduct a delphi survey and forecast the capacity of renewable energy. We further propose a stochastic mixed integer programming model that determines an optimal capacity expansion and the amount of power generation using each generation technology. Using the proposed model, we test eight generation mix scenarios and particularly evaluate how much the expansion of renewable energy contributes to the total costs for power generation in Korea. The evaluation results show that the use of renewable energy incurs additional costs.
