  • Trichloroethylene (TCE) is an environmental contaminant provoking genetic mutation and damages to liver and central nerve system even at low concentrations. A practical scheme is reported using toluene as a primary substrate to revitalize the biofilter column for an extended period of TCE degradation. The rate of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by Pseudomonas putida F1 at $25^{\circ}C$ decreased exponentially with time, without toluene feeding to a biofilter column ($11\;cm\;I.D.{\times}95\;cm$ height). The rate of decrease was 2.5 times faster at a TCE concentration of $970\;{\mu}g/L$ compared to a TCE concentration of $110\;{\mu}g/L$. The TCE itself was not toxic to the cells, but the metabolic intermediates of the TCE degradation were apparently responsible for the decrease in the TCE degradation rate. A short-term (2 h) supply of toluene ($2,200\;{\mu}g/L$) at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 6.4 min recovered the relative column activity by $43\%$ when the TCE removal efficiency at the time of toluene feeding was $58\%$. The recovery of the TCE removal efficiency increased at higher incoming toluene concentrations and longer toluene supply durations according to the Monod type of kinetic expressions. A longer duration ($1.4{\sim}2.4$ times) of toluene supply increased the recovery of the TCE removal efficiency by $20\%$ for the same toluene load.

  • A combination of the submerged membrane activated-sludge bioreactor(SMABR) equipped with non-woven fabric filter and oyster-zeolite (OZ) packed-bed adsorption column was studied to evaluate the advanced tertiary treatment of nitrogen and phosphorous. The non-woven filter module was submerged in the MBR and aeration was operated intermittently for an optimal wastewater treatment performance. Artificial wastewater with $COD_{Cr}$ of 220 mg/L, total nitrogen (T-N) of 45 mg/L, and total phosphorous (T-P) of 6 mg/L was used in this study. MLSS was maintained about $4,000\;{\sim}\;5,000\;mg/L$ throughout the experiments. The experiments were performed for 100-day with periodic non-woven filter washing. The results showed that $COD_{Cr}$ could be effectively removed in SMABR alone with over 94% removal efficiency. However, T-N and T-P removal efficiency was slightly lower than expected with SMABR alone. The permeate from SMABR was then passed through the OZ column for tertiary nutrients removal. The final effluent analysis confirmed that nutrients could be additionally removed resulting in over 87% and 46% removal efficiencies for T-N and T-P, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the waste oyster-shell can be effectively reclaimed as an adsorbent in advanced tertiary wastewater treatment processes in combination with SMABR equipped with non-woven fabric filter.

  • Hematite-coated sand was examined for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) to the arsenic-contaminated subsurface in the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As in a batch and a flow system was investigated through the adsorption isotherm, removal kinetics and column experiments. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of As (<1.0 mg/L). In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhanced the removal efficiency, but the amount of the As removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As (V) than As (III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system. Therefore. the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of As species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of As in a flow system.

  • Polyvinyl alcohol/alginate hydrogel beads containing Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH-PVA/alginate beads) were synthesized for phosphate removal. Results showed that blending PVA with the LDH-alginate beads significantly improved their stability in a phosphate solution. The kinetic reaction in LDH-PVA/alginate beads reached equilibrium at 12 hr-post reaction with 99.2% removal. The amount of phosphate removed at equilibrium ($q_e$) was determined to be 0.389 mgP/g. The equilibrium data were described well by the Freundlich isotherm with the distribution coefficient ($K_F$, 0.638) and the constant (n, 0.396). Phosphate removal in LDH-PVA/alginate beads was not sensitive to solution pH. Also, the removal capacity of LDH-PVA/alginate beads ($q_e$, 1.543 mgP/g) was two orders of magnitude greater than that of PVA/alginate beads ($q_e$, 0.016 mgP/g) in column experiments. This study demonstrates that LDH-PVA/alginate beads with a higher chemical stability against phosphate compared to LDH-alginate beads have the potential for phosphate removal as adsorptive media.

  • The algal blooms in stagnant streams and lakes have caused many problems. Excessive algae leads to disturbance of ecosystem and overload of water treatment processes. Therefore, phosphorus(P), source of algal blooms, should be controlled. In this study, a filtration trench has been developed to convert dissolved phosphorus into hydroxyapatite(HAP) so that it could be crystallized on the surface of 'phosphorus removal granular material'; and residual particulate phosphorus could be removed by additional precipitation and filtration. The front and rear parts of filtration trench consisted of 'phosphorus removal granular material contact bed' and 'limestone filtration bed', respectively. As a result of the column test using phosphorus removal granular material and limestone serially, $PO_4-P$ was removed more than 90% when EBCT(empty bed contact time) of the contact bed was over 20 minutes; and T-P represented 60% of removal efficiency when total EBCT was over 1.5 hours. The results of column tests to figure out the sedimentation characteristics showed that more than 90% of particulate phosphorus could be removed within 24 hours. It was necessary to optimize the filtration part in order to increase removal efficiency of T-P additionally. Also, it was confirmed through the simulation of Visual MINTEQ that most of particulate phosphorus in the column tests is the form of HAP. Based on the results of the study, it could be suggested that the design parameters are over 0.5 hour of EBCT for phosphorus removal granular material contact bed and over 1.5 hours of EBCT for limestone filtration bed.

  • Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been identified as a best available technology (BAT) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for removal disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) were used to investigate four types of carbon (F400, Norit1240, Norit40S, and Aquasorb1500) for their affinity to absorb natural organic matter (NOM). DOC, $UV_{254}$, and Total dissolved nitrogen (TON) concentrations were measured in the column effluent to track GAC breakthrough. DOC and $UV_{254}$ breakthrough occurred at around 3500 bed volumes (BVs) of operation for all GACs investigated. The $UV_{254}$ breakthrough curves showed 33% to 48% at 8000 BVs, when the DOC was 48% to 65%. All GACs showed greater removal in DOC than $UV_{254}$. The NORIT1240 GAC was determined to have the highest adsorption capacity for DOC and $UV_{254}$. The removal of nitrate (NOTN) had not broken through over BVs. The initial TON breakthrough curves were started around 50%, when the DOC breakthrough was only 10 % at 500 BVs. The curves were gradually increased after 3500 BVs and approximately 69% through 81% of TON breakthrough occurred at 8000 BVs. All of the GACs were able to remove TON, in the case of this investigation the majority of the TON was present as DON. Because nitrate nitrogen was seldom removed and ammonium nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was not detected in the effluent from RSSCTs even though raw water. The carbon usage rate of DOC was from 2 to 6 times less than that of TON. The NORIT1240 GAC demonstrated the best performance in terms of DOC removal, while the F400 GAC was best in terms of TON removal. Excitation emission matrix(EEM) analysis was used to show that GAC adsorption successfully removed most of Humic-like DOC and Fulvic-like DOCs. However, soluble microbial product(SMP)-like DOC in the absence of raw water were detected in the NORIT40S and Aquasorb1500 GAC. The authors assumed that this results is due probably to the part of GAC in the RSSCT which was converted into biological activated carbon(BAC). To compare with organics removal by GAC according to preloading, the virgin GACs had readily accessible sites that were adsorbed DOC more rapidly than preloaded GACs, but the TDN removal had not showed differences between those GACs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal of ammonium nitrogen by biological nitrification in raw water containing LAS using BAC. At batch teats, LAS removal by ozone followed the first order reaction, and the rate constants(k) by ozone dose 1, 3mg/min.L were $0.040min^{-1}$, $0.062min^{-1}$ respectively. Therefore, the more ozone was dosed, the higher LAS was removed The reaction between ozone and ammonium nitrogen also followed the first order, and rate constants(k) at pH7,8 and 9 were $8.9{\times}10^{-4}min-1$, $3.8{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$, and $2.9{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ respectively at ozone dose of 3mg/min.L . Therefore, ammonium nitrogen was little removed by ozone under neutral pH of 7. The continuous flow apparatus had four sets composed of a ozone contacter and a GAC column. Through continuous filtration test for 50days, the following conclusions were derived; (1) LAS was removed 23%, 30% respectively by ozone dose 1, 3mg/L, and was not detected in all column effluents during the period of experiment. Therefore, it appeared that adsorption capacities of each column still remained. (2) Ammonium nitrogen concentration after ozone contact varied little in raw Water because pH of raw water was from 6 to 7, and was transfered to nitrite and nitrate within GAC columns as the result of staged nitrification. After 30days, nitrite was not detected in all column effluents due to biological equilbrium between nitro semonas and nitrobacter Average removals of ammonium nitrogen in each column after the lapse of 30days were the following; ${\cdot}$ column A (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column B (ozone dose 1mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 91% ${\cdot}$ column C (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 14.2min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column D (ozone dose 0mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 53% Though column A and C reached nitrification of about 100%, column C (longer EBCT than column A) was more stable than column A. (3) After backwash, nitrification reached steady state within 5 to 8 hours. Therefore, nitrification was not greatly affected by backwash. (4) According to the nitrification capacity in depth of column A, C, where 100% nitrification occured. LAS was removed within 20cm, while ammonium nitrogen required more depth to be removed by nitrification.

  • An interpretation on the solid circulation characteristics in a fluidized-bed process has been carried out as a first step to simulate the dry entrained-bed absorption and bubbling-bed regeneration system for $CO_2$ removal from flue gas. A particle population balance has been developed to determine the solid flow rates and particle size distributions in the process. Effects of principal process parameters have been discussed in a laboratory scale process (absorption column: 25 mm i.d., 6 m in height; regeneration column: 0.1 m i.d., 1.2 m in height). The particle size distributions in absorption and regeneration columns were nearly the same. As gas velocity or static bed height in the absorption column increased, soild circulation rate and feed rate of fresh sorbent increased, however, mean particle diameter decreased in the absorption column. As cut diameter of the cyclone of the absorption column increased, solid circulation rate decreased, whereas feed rate of fresh sorbent and mean particle diameter in the absorption column increased. As attrition coefficient of sorbent particle increased, solid circulation rate and feed rate of fresh sorbent increased but mean particle diameter in the absorption column decreased.

  • This study assessed the removal characteristics of taste and odor causing compounds (2-methylisoborneol and geosmin) and organic matters, using a pilot-scale ozone/granular activated carbon ($O_{3}$/GAC) process treating surface water of Pal-dang reservoir in the Han river over a 3-month period. Experiments were conducted to verify the removal efficiency of $O_{3}$/GAC process which has two different empty bed contact time (EBCT) ($O_{3}$/GAC column 1 : 10 min and 2 : 15.1 min) with 10.86 min contact time of ozonation at 1.0 mg/L $O_{3}$. Spiking test using geosmin and 2-MIB was also conducted systematically to mimic the conditions when the algae appears, specifically at the levels similar to the concentrations experienced (geosmin: 250 ng/L) in the winter of 2011. In single ozonation process, organic materials, disinfection by-products (DBPs) and their precursors were disassembled but not removed completely. Meanwhile, it was verified that organic matters, taste and odor causing compounds, and DBPs were well removed when sequentially passing through the GAC process. The pilot results also showed that GAC column with larger EBCT achieved higher removal efficiency. Specifically, in spiking tests, single $O_{3}$ process showed approximately 89% removal efficiency of geosmin and 2-MIB. $O_{3}$/GAC combined process demonstrated excellent removal of geosmin and 2-MIB, which are higher than 95%.
