  • The treatment of piggery wastes was carried out at pilot scale using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration. The physicochemical properties were obtained from treated samples with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as $Ag^+$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Mn^{2+}$, which main obsevations are subjected to inspect surface properties, color removal properties by Uv/Vis and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted with waste water to investigation of the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. The removal results for the piggery waste using multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was achieved the satisfactory removal performance under permitted values of Ministry of Environment of Korea. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was determined by the performance of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.

  • An experimental study on improvement of the paper-mill wastewater treatment using the pure oxygen activated sludge process was conducted. The effects of hydraulic retention time(HRT) and BOD loading on organic removal efficiency were investigated. The BOD removal efficiencies were above 90% under all examined HRTs except for HRT of 3 hours. The increase of HRT from 3 hours to 6 hours, and to 12 hours significantly improved BOD and COD removal efficiencies, respectively. However, additional increase of HRT did not affect organic removal efficiency. F/M ratio change at fixed HRT did not affect organic removal efficiency. However, F/M ratio investigated in this study(0.11~1.98kgBOD/kgMLVSS/day) was 5 times greater in maximum than that of conventional activated sludge process, which implies that pure oxygen activated sludge process can treat wastewater with high organic strength. Under the same HRT, the volumetric BOD loading change cause no effect on organic removal efficiency also.

  • In this study, we analyzed the $NO_X$ removal efficiency and particle size distribution by the pulsed corona discharge process and investigated the effect of several process variables. The NO removal efficiencies and the particle characteristics were measured and analyzed as the function of initial concentrations of NO, $H_2O$, and $NH_3$, applied voltage, pulse frequency and residence time. As the frequency of applied voltage increases, or as the applied voltage increases or as the residence time increases, the NO removal efficiency increases. The change of initial $NH_3$ and $H_2O$ concentrations do not affect the NO removal efficiency significantly. The particle concentration and size increases with the increases of initial NO concentration, residence time and applied voltage.

  • A nitrifier consortium immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol was used to remove ammonia nitrogen from synthetic wastewater in an airlift bioreactor. The minimum aeration rates were 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 vvm for 5, 10, 15 and 20% immobilized bead packing volume fraction, respectively. The efficient packing fraction and the aeration rate for ammonia nitrogen removal were 15% and 2.4 vvm, respectively. With a hydraulic retention time of 0.5hr, the removal rate and the efficiency of ammonia nitrogen removal were 1685 g/㎥$.$day and 48% at an influent ammonia nitrogen concentration of 75 g/㎥.

  • The use of magnetoresistive (MR) head requires much tighter control of particle contamination in a drive since loose particles on the disk surface will generate thermal asperities (TA). In this study, a spinoff test was performed to investigate the adhesion and removal capability of a particle to disk surface. Numerical simulation was also performed to investigate dominant factor of particle detachment and to support experimental results. It was shown that particles are detached from the disk surface by the moment derived from the centrifugal force and the drag force and that the centrifugal force and capillary force are the dominant force, which determines spin-off of a particle on the disk surface. Removal of particles smaller than several micrometers, which are the main source of TA generation, is extremely difficult since the adhesion forces exceed the centrifugal force. Lubricant types and manufacturing process also influence the particle removal. Lower bonding ratio and lower viscosity of the lubricant will help to increase the removal rate of the particles from the disk surface.

  • The effect of temperature, washing time, mechanical agitation and concentration on the removal from cotton fabrics of tripalmitin labelled with C\sup 14\ were studied. In order to correlate the detergency with the removal mechanism, solubilization and suspending power of surfactants were observed. RESULTS : 1. The detergency from cotton fabric was increased with elevating temperature and over the temperature of maximum detergency, the rate of soil removal was rather decreased. 2. The effects of washing time and mechanical agitation on the removal of triplamitin were obvious at lower temperature. 3. The removal of tripalmitin was remarkably increased at higher concentration over cmc for all surfactants. The detergency of nonionic surfactant -NPPG- was best, this was resulted from its large solubilization and suspending power.

  • This study was conducted to investigate anoxic-RBC-anoxic-RBC process and its application to remove biologically organics and nitrogen. BOD and total-nitrogen(T-N) removal efficiencies were decreased as volumetric loading rate increased. But, the removal efficiency changes of T-N were little, as compared to BOD. Increase of internal recycle rate had few affect of BOD and T-N removal rates. Also, influent allocation(to 2nd anoxic reactor) had few affect of BOD removal efficiency rate. However, when the influent allocation rate was 30%, T-N removal efficiency was increased to 84.1 %. BOD/N ratio applied to 2nd anoxic reactor was increased to range of 3.65-4.37 as influent allocation rate increased to range 20∼35%. But, it might also cause adverse effect such as decrease of denitrification rate in excessive influent allocation rate.

  • In cotton fabric sizing the domestic material is normally starch finds itself more frequent uses than the PVA size does. In this study we have examined the effects of ironing temperature and washing temperature on the removal of sized PVA by washing and have got following temperature on the removal of sized PVA by washing and have got following results: 1. the removal of PVA is related approximately to the reciprodal of the ironing temperature. 2. the higher the ironing temperature, the lower is the removal of PVA; and if the ironing temperature is higher than $140^{\circ}C$ the removal of PVA decreases abruptly even if the washing temperature were still high. 3. The most appropriate washing temperature should be at least $75^{\circ}C$when the ironing is carried out at 10$0^{\circ}C$ the same holds for $80^{\circ}C$to $120^{\circ}C$and $90^{\circ}C$to $120^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This study proposes a mathematical model to characterize the removal of nitrogen oxides in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma process. As well as the reactions between nitrogen oxides, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen, the model takes into account the effect of ethylene often used as a chemical additive to reduce the power consumption of the process on the removal of nitrogen oxides. Since the concentrations of the radicals concerned in the main reactions including O, OH, H and N should be calculated to predict the removal efficiency of nitrogen oxides, they were theoretically derived. The parameters affecting the removal of nitrogen oxides, such as initial concentration, discharge power, humidity, and ethylene concentration were experimentally evaluated, which were compared with the calculated results to verify the validity of the model proposed. The predicted concentrations of several byproducts formed in this process were also presented and discussed. The effects of several parameters mentioned above on the removal of nitrogen oxides were reasonable described by the proposed model.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the structure and mechanical properties of laser-processed pads on their polishing behavior such as their removal rate and WIWNU (within wafer non-uniformity) during the chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process. The holes on the pad acted as the reservoir of slurry particles and enhanced the removal rate. Without grooves, no effective removal of wafers was possible. When the length of the circular-type grooves was increased, higher removal rates and lower wafer non-uniformity were measured. The removal rate and non-uniformity linearly increased as the elastic modulus of the top pad increased. Higher removal rates and lower non-uniformity were measured as the hardness of the pad increased.
