In this study, the effect of initial nitrate loading on nitrate removal and byproduct selectivity was evaluated in a continuous system. Nitrate removal decreased from 100% to 25% with the increase in nitrate loading from 10 to $300mg/L\;NO_3-N$. Ammonium selectivity decreased and nitrite selectivity increased, while nitrogen selectivity showed a peak shape in the same range of nitrate loading. The nitrate removal was enhanced at low catalyst to nitrate ratios and 100% nitrate removal was achieved at catalyst to nitrate ratio of ${\geq}33mg\;catalyst/mg\;NO_3-N$. Maximum nitrogen selectivity (47%) was observed at $66mg\;catalyst/mg\;NO_3-N$, showing that continuous Cu-Pd-NZVI system has a maximum removal capacity of 37 mg $NO_3{^-}-N/g_{catalyst}/h$. The results from this study emphasize that nitrate reduction in a bimetallic catalytic system could be sensitive to changes in optimized regimes.
This study is to develop electromagnetic-catalyst application plasma reactors for indoor air purification. Nitrogen Oxide(NOx) removal characteristics are measured in the electromagnetic catalyst application plasma reactors with various parameters and the effect of catalyst or/and magnetic field are investigated on the NOx removal. And AC or DC high voltage is applied for corona discharge, flow rates are 150~1500 $\ell/min$ and NO initial concentration is about 10 ppm. $Mn0_2$ and $TiO_2$ catalysts to increase NOx removal rate are used. In the results, NOx removal rate by AC power is about 10 % higher than that by DC power under the experimental condition of 700 $\ell/min$, 5 magnets, $MnO_2$ and $Ti)_2$ catalysts. When magnet is applied to the reactor, NOx removal rate increased. Also, the reactor with $MnO_2$ and $Ti)_2$ catalyst and magnet have the best removal rate.
The dissolved oxygen removal by H$_2$-O$_2$ reaction in column packed with various catalysts wes examined. The catalysts employed were the prepared polymeric catalyst platinum on activated carbon, and Lewatit OC-1045 which is available commercially. The column experiments with the prepared polymeric catalyst showed the dissolved oxygen reduced to 35 ppb which is below the limit in feed water of power plants. This implies the likely application of the prepared catalyst for practical use. The activated carbon required the pre-treatment for the removal of dissolved oxygen, since the surface of activated carbon contains much oxygen adsorbed initially. The Lewatit catalyst exposed the best performance, however, the aged one showed the gradual loss of catalytic activity due to degradation of resin catalyst.
In the mine exploration sites, sustainable treatment system of mine water with energy saving and minimized chemical additives is required. Since most of the mine water contains highly-concentrated ferrous ion, it is necessary to study on the removal method of iron ions. We propose the system consisting of two processes; precipitation process by air oxidation using solid catalyst-modified magnetite and separation process combining gravitational sedimentation and magnetic separation using a permanent magnet. Firstly, in the precipitation process (a former process of the system), we succeeded to prepare solid catalyst-modified magnetite. Air oxidation using solid catalyst-modified magnetite using $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$ as a starting material showed high iron removal capability. Secondly, in the separation process (latter process of the system), solid catalyst-modified magnetite using $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$ as a starting material can be separated by a superconducting bulk magnet and a permanent magnet.
Plasma/catalyst combined reactor was designed to overcome the limits of plasma and catalyst technologies. Optimum reductant and catalyst was selected from screening test. Experiments about the concentrations of reactant and $H_2O$ and the effect of temperature were carried out. Hydrocarbons with double bond such as propylene and so on were more reactive than any other reductants in plasma/catalyst condition. Photocatalyst, especially hombikat >$TiO_2$ with the largest surface area among the catalysts tested, showed the highest DeNOx efficiency in plasma/catalyst reaction. As the concentration of $H_2O$ increased, the removal of NO was enhanced. The increased concentration of >$O_2$ promoted the reaction of NO which was oxidized to$NO_2$.
Wet air oxidation (WAO) of oily sludge was carried out using $Fe^{3+}$ as catalyst, placed in a 0.5 L batch autoclave in the temperature range of $250-330^{\circ}C$. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of temperature, the initial COD, reaction time, concentration of catalyst and $O_2$ excess (OE) on the oxidation of the oily sludge. The results showed that in the WAO 88.4% COD was achieved after 9 min reaction at temperature of $330^{\circ}C$, OE of 0.8 and the initial COD of 20000 mg/L. Temperature was found to have a significant impact on the oxidation of oily sludge. Adding a catalyst significantly improved the COD removal. Homogenous catalyst, $Fe^{3+}$, showed effective removal for pollutants. COD removal was 99.7% in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) over $Fe^{3+}$ catalyst. The results proved that the CWAO was an effective pretreatment method for the oily sludge.
The intermittent nature of renewable energy is a challenge to overcome for safety and stable performance in water electrolysis systems linked to renewable energy. Oxygen removal using the catalyst is suitable for maintaining the oxygen concentration in hydrogen below the explosive level (4%) even in intermittent power supply. Metals such as Pd, Pt, and Ni are expected to be effective materials due to their hydrogen affinity. The oxygen removal performance was compared under high hydrogen concentration conditions by loading on γ-Al2O3 with high reactivity and large surface area. The characteristics of the catalyst before and after the reaction were analyzed through X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, H2-temperature programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, etc. The Pd catalyst that showed the best performance was able to lower 2% oxygen to less than 5 ppm. Changes in catalyst characteristics after the reaction indicate that oxygen vacancies are related to oxygen removal performance and catalyst deactivation.
In this study, nitrate reduction of real groundwater sample by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite catalyst was evaluated at different nitrate concentrations, catalyst concentrations, and recycling. Results show that the nitrate reduction is improved by increasing the catalyst concentration. Specific nitrate removal by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite increased linearly with the increase of nitrate concentration showing that the catalyst possesses significantly higher reduction capacity. More than 95% nitrate reduction was observed over five recycles by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite with ~56% nitrogen selectivity in all recycling batches. The results from this study indicate that stable reduction of nitrate in groundwater can be achieved by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite over the wide range of initial nitrate inputs.
Ozone alone and catalytic ozone processes were introduced for treatment of humic acid, which is representative refractory organic compound. The treatment efficiencies of humic acid in each process were analyzed in pH variation, DOC removal, and $UV_{254}$ decrease. Mn loaded GAC catalyst was prepared by loading potassium permanganate onto the granular activated carbon surface. BCM-GAC and BCM-Silica gel catalyst were prepared by BCM. $UV_{254}$ decrease in all processes was comparatively high with efficiency over 87%. DOC removal in ozone/GAC process was the highest with 78%, and removal rates for other processes followed the order ozone/BCM-GAC(62%) > ozone/BCM-silica gel(45%) > ozone/silica gel(43%) > ozone/Mn Loaded GAC(42%) > ozone alone(37%).
