Environmental Impact Assessment Using Remote Sensing Data : the Land Use Change (인공위성자료를 이용한 환경영향평가 : 토지이용 변화를 중심으로)

  • Remote sensing begins to be applied in Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA), and it can systematically assess land use which is an important factor in EIA. This study is to predict land use change of Ulsan region and to assess impact on land use using the past and the present data of remote sensing. Also we analyzed an impact area influenced by EIA projects through the integration of remote sensing and GIS. This technique will be applied to the screening stage in EIA.

  • KMA successfully began to receive and utilize the GOES-9 GVAR data since May 22nd 2003 when GOES-9 replaced the long-lived GMS-5 for Western Pacific and East Asian region until operation of MTSAT-1R in 2004. To take advantage of improvements of the GOES-9 data over the GMS-5 data, such as the increase of the temporal and spat ial resolution and addition of 3.9${\mu}$m channel, we have improved several algorithms to derive the meteorological products. Here we show two examples of algorithms, sea surface temperature and atmospheric motion vector, and preliminary results of validation of the improved algorithm.

  • A new digital correlator fur an airborne synthetic aperture radiometer was designed in order to replace the conventional analog correlator unit which will become very complicated while the number of channels is increasing. The digital correlator uses digital IQ demodulator instead of the intermediate frequency (IF) phase shifter to make the correlation processing performed digitally at base band instead of analogly at IF. This technique has been applied to the digital receiver in softradio. The down-converted IF signals from each pair of receiver channels become low rate base-band digital signals after under-sampled, Digitally Down-Converted (DDC), decimated and filtered by FIR filters. The digital signals are further processed by two digital multipliers (complex correlation), the products are integrated by the integrators and finally the outputs from the integrators compose of the real part and the imaginary part of a sample of the visibility function. This design is tested by comparing the results from digital correlators and that from analog correlators. They are agreed with each other very well. Due to the fact that the digital correlators are realized with the help of Analog-Digital Converter (ADC) chips and the FPGA technology, the realized volume, mass, power consumption and complexity turned out to be greatly reduced compared with that of the analog correlators. Simulations show that the resolution of ADC has an influence on the synthesized antenna patterns, but this can be neglected if more than 2bit is used.

Aerosol Optical and Spectral Characteristics in Yellow Sand Events on April, 1998 in Seoul. Part I: Observation (분광복사계와 일사계 관측에 의한 황사 및 에어러솔의 광학적 특성 연구)

  • To examine the detectability of the yellow sand and/or aerosol from China crossing over the Yellow Sea within the range of OSMI wavelengths(400-900 nm), we have investigated the optical characteristics of aerosols in yellow sand events observed on April, 1998 in Seoul. The spectral reflectance(%) and aerosol optical thickness in the range of Visible(VIS) and near Infrared (NIR) wavelengths were derived from the measurements of solar radiation using the GER-2600 spectroradiometer and sunphotometer during the April, 1798. The average spectral reflectance for the yellow sand events is over 40% and higher around 14:30 than 12:00 LST, but that for clear days is about 20% both at 12:00 and 14:30 LST in the range of 500-900 nm. The aerosol optical thickness at 501 nm varied from 0.25 on very clear day to 1.01 during a so-called "yellow-sand" episode and that for 673 nm varied from 0.14 to 0.92, respectively.

  • The International Space Station (ISS) offers research opportunities to researchers through crew's space mission in the field of remote sensing. ISS provides the facilities to place and operate experiment equipments in a variety of fields, especially, microgravity experiments and Earth observations. This paper is intended to give readers a brief introduction to the ISS utilization and the capabilities for remote sensing researches. We investigate what kind of crew missions and payloads should be developed for remote sensing researches on the ISS.

Detection of low Salinity Water in the Northern East China Sea During Summer using Ocean Color Remote Sensing

  • In the summer of 1998-2001, a huge flood occurred in the Yangtze River in the eastern China. Low salinity water less than 28 psu from the river was detected around the southwestern part of the Jeju Island, which is located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. We studied how to detect low salinity water from the Yangtze River, that cause a terrible damage to the Korean fisheries. We established a relationships between low salinity at surface, turbid water from the Yangtze River and digital ocean color remotely sensed data of SeaWiFS sensor in the northern East China Sea, in the summer of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The salinity charts of the northern East China Sea were created by regeneration of the satellite ocean color data using the empirical formula from the relationships between in situ low salinity, in situ measured turbid water with transparency and SeaWiFS ocean color data (normalized water leaving radiance of 490 nm/555 nm).

  • Environmental Impact Assesment(EIA) is composed of various procedures, such as screening, scoping, inventory survey, prediction, assessment, mitigation measure, alternative assessment, and post management. Remote sensing introduced lately begins to be applied ecosystem and land use in inventory survey and assessment of EIA. This study explains on land use classification, buffering analysis of residential area, and overlaying analysis of odor predictive data with residential area for application to EIA with remote sensing data. Residential area extracted from land use classification of remote sensing provides effectively buffering analysis of residential area in selection of landfill site with GIS. It could assess also residential effect to an offensive odor by overlaying analysis. Application methods in EIA should be enlarged to assess effectively.

  • In this study, a new technique for atmospheric transmittance estimated from ALOS PRISM data is developed. It is based on satellite's observing radiances of different view angles and assumes that the cause of difference in radiances is the different view angles. The ALOS PRISM has three independent optical systems for viewing forward and backward and producing a stereoscopic image along the satellite's track. This stereo pair data can be used to estimate the transmittance according to the radiative transfer theory. This derived transmittance will be validated by the AERONET data and compared with the MODTRAN4 simulation results. Results show that the higher the land cover albedo, the better the derived transmittance compared to the AERONET data. Besides, this technique also shows the transmittance retrieval will be underestimated for the low land cover albedo.

  • Many researches conducted to investigate the relationship between surface emissivity and surface temperature in the past two decades and pointed out that the emissivity play a key role in applying remote sensing data to retrieve surface temperature. The task of surface temperature estimation is so important in many research fields, such as earth energy budgets, evapotranspiration, drought, global change and heat island effect. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop an effective and accurate technique to estimate the emissivity for accurate surface temperature estimations. This study developed an improved emissivity estimation technique for the use of surface temperature retrievals with MODIS data. The result of applying this improved technique using Band 31 of MODIS shows that the accuracy of estimated surface temperatures will be improved. This study also uses MODIS data observed in 2005 to establish the relationship between the surface emissivity correction factor and NDVI. Through the use of these correction factors, the land surface temperature can be retrieved more accurate with MODIS data.
