  • This research is about the inherent optical properties(IOPs) of algae which is collected from Nam-Hae for basic research of red tide remote sensing technique development. 21 kinds of red tide organisms were cultivated to investigate IOPs of them in the level of laboratory, and specific absorption coefficient of phytoplankton($a^*$) and backscattering coefficient of phytoplankton(${b_b}^*$) are estimated by using spectrophotometer. Absorption spectrums according to species appeared to range from 0.005 to 0.06 ($m^2{\cdot}mg^{-1}$), and the shapes of spectrums were also different. The range of ${b_b}^*$ appeared to be $10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-4}\;m^2{\cdot}mg^{-1}$, which had about 100 times differences between species, and the shape of spectrum have significant difference between species. These results will input as a remote sensing reflectance model input parameter from ocean color.

  • The monitoring methods for volcanic gases are divided into remote sensing and direct gas sampling approaches. In the remote sensing approach, COSPEC and Li-COR are used to measure $SO_2$ and $CO_2$, respectively, with FT-IR for detection of a range of volcanic gases. However, the remote sensing approach is not applicable to Mt. Baegdu, where the atmospheric contents of volcanic gases are very low as a result of the strong interaction of volcanic gases with the nearby surface water and groundwater. On the other hand, the direct gas sampling approach involves the collection of volcanic gases from volcanic vents or fumaroles and the subsequent laboratory analysis, thus making it possible to measure even very low levels of volcanic gases. The direct sampling approach can be subdivided into the evacuated bottle method and the flow-through bottle method. In applying both methods, sampling bottles typically contain reaction media to trap specific volcanic gases. For example, NaOH solution(Giggenbach bottle), $NH_4OH$ solution, and acid condensates have been experimented for volcanic gas sampling. Once taken from vents and fumaroles, the samples of volcanic gases are pretreated and subsequently analyzed for volcanic gases using GC, IC, HPLC, titrimetry, TOC-IC, or ICP-MS. Recently, there has been the increasing number of evidences on the potential volcanic activity of Mt. Baegdu. However, little technical development has been made for the sampling and analysis of volcanic gases in Korea. In the present work, we reviewed various volcanic gas monitoring methods, and provided the detailed information on the monitoring methods applied to Mt. Baegdu.

  • Phytoplankton controls marine ecosystems in terms of nutrients, photosynthetic rate, carbon cycle, etc. and the degree of its influence on the marine environment depends on their physical size. Many studies have been attempted to identify marine phytoplankton size classes using the remote sensing techniques. One of successful approach was the three-component model which estimates the chlorophyll concentrations of three phytoplankton size classes (micro-phytoplankton; >20 ㎛, nano-; 2-20 ㎛ and pico-; <2 ㎛) as a function of total chlorophyll. Here, we examined the applicability of Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) to the mapping of the phytoplankton size class distribution in the East Sea. A fit of the three-component model to a biomarker pigment dataset collected in the study area for some years including a large harmful algal bloom period has been carried out to derive size-fractioned chlorophyll concentration (CHL). The tuned three-component model was applied to the hourly GOCI images to identify the fractions of each phytoplankton size class for the entire CHL. Then, we investigated the distribution of phytoplankton community in terms of the size structure in the East Sea during the harmful Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in the summer of 2013.

  • Recently increased anthropogenic aerosols change the radiative energy balance and affect human life. The management of air quality requires monitoring both the local emissions and transported pollutants. In order to estimate the quantitative contribution of long-range transport from remote sources on aerosol concentrations in Seoul, the airmasses were classified into five types with respect to their pathways. When airmass came from west over strong emission regions in China, high concentrations of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) were found, even higher than those for the stagnated airmass. High OC concentrations were found when airmass came from north while BC, EC, and $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were lower than those of the stagnated airmasses. During dust events, the $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ concentrations increased significantly while carbonaceous aerosol concentrations did not increased. The temporal variations of aerosol concentrations in Seoul were affected by the seasonal variations of airmass pathways. The high $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations over $100{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ appeared most frequently when the airmasses came from west.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the baroclinic response of the upper-layer of two-layered fluid when the lower-layer motion is driven by pumping an external fluid into the lower-layer or by pumping out the lower-layer fluid. Recent observations of the barotropic nature of deep water movements in the East Sea (fakematsu et al., 1994; KORDI, 1997) may suggest a possibility of interaction between the upper and lower layer via interface tilting. For homogeneous fluid, steady and axisymmetric source or sink causes axisymmetric geostrophic flow, and the lower-layer motion in two-layered fluid was similar to homogeneous flow. But as Rossby number (${\varepsilon}$) or internal Froude number ($f_2$) increases, the lower-layer motion was affected by the interface tilting. The interface tilting calculated based on the observed azimuthal velocities of upper- and lower-layers becomes greater as $f_2$ increases. In other words, the increase of the $f_2$ changes the barotropic system to baroclinic system.

  • As the Wenchuan Earthquake was of high magnitude and shallow seismic focus, it caused great damage and serious geo-hazards. By the field investigation and remote-sensing interpretation after the earthquake and by using means of GIS, the distribution of geo-hazards triggered by the earthquake was analyzed and the conclusions are as follows: (1) the earthquake geo-hazards showed the feature of zonal distribution along the earthquake fault zone and linear distribution along the rivers; (2) the distribution of earthquake geo-hazards had a marked hanging wall effect, for the development density of geo-hazards in the hanging wall of earthquake fault was obviously higher than that in the foot wall and the width of strong development zone in the hanging wall was about 10 km; (3) the topographical slope was a main factor which controlled the development of earthquake geo-hazards and a vast majority of geo-hazards were distributed on the slopes of 20 to 50 degrees; (4) the earthquake geo-hazards had a corresponding relationship with the elevation and micro-landform, for most hazards happened in the river valleys and canyon sections below the elevation of 1500 to 2000 m, particularly in the upper segment of canyon sections (namely, the turning point from the dale to the canyon). Thin ridge, isolated or full-face space mountains were most sensitive to the seismic wave, and had a striking amplifying effect. In these areas, collapses and landslides were most likely to develop; (5) the study also showed that different lithologies determined the types of geo-hazards, and usually, landslides occurred in soft rocks, while collapses occurred in hard rocks.

  • In dynamic Web service environments, the performance of the Internet is unpredictable; the reliability and effectiveness of remote Web services are also unclear. Therefore, it can hardly be guaranteed that the quality of Web service (QoWS) attributes of Web services do not fluctuate with the dynamic Web service environments. When a composite service is planned in the context of dynamic service environments, there is another aspect which has not been taken into account by existing works, namely, concurrency - the fact that multiple requests to a composite service may arrive at the same time. Considering the dynamics of Web service environments and concurrency of requests, we propose in this paper a service selection scheme which adopts top-k dominating queries to generate a composition solution rather than only select the best composition solution for a given request. The experimental results have investigated the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach and shown that it outperforms baseline and traditional methods for service selection.

  • In this paper we studied the radiation detection technology which described the radiation level distribution in high radiation area with remotely and safely. The designed radiation mapping system was composed of radiation nodes and radiation station. The radiation nodes could sense the radiation dose values with pMOSFET radiation sensors and transmit them to the radiation station. At the radiation station the received radiation values were merged with a geometric information and visualized at the virtual graphic location. For the functional verification of the above system, we attached the radiation nodes to each corner in our laboratory, executed the mapping tests, and confirmed the designed functions finally.

  • Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia that covers 37.5% of the total land area. Multitemporal satellite images of Landsat and SPOT were used to examine deforestation and forest fragmentation in Sarawak between 1990 and 2009. Supervised classification with maximum likelihood classifier was used to classify the land cover types in Sarawak. The overall accuracies of all classifications were more than 80%. Our results showed that forests were reduced at 0.62% annually during the two decades. The peat swamp forest suffered a tremendous loss of almost 50% between 1990 and 2009 especially at coastal divisions due to intensified oil palm plantation development. Fragmentation analysis revealed the loss of about 65% of the core area of intact forest during the change period. The core area of peat swamp forest had almost completely disappeared during the two decades.

  • Up to row, researchers have observed experiment environment to study about raising procedure and an ecology of the ocean fishes with naked eye. Then they can monitor status information in only laboratory such as temperatures, image of the fish farm, etc. Such the existing way as this can't observe an ecology of the ocean fishes with scientific and systematic method and moreover it needs many of researchers. So in this paper, we design and implement a fish farm monitoring system which receives status of remote experiment environment through the internet whenever you want it and wherever you want it, and monitors and analyzes its status using embedded system of which the operating system is linux.
