Scented Geraniums: a Model System for Phytoremediation

  • All living organisms depend on soil and water for their sustained growth and development. In recent years, sustenance of life in these growth matrices has been adversely affected by the cumulative increase in environmental pollutants resulting from increasing population, growing economies and resource-use. This review provides a glimpse into the problem of global environmental pollution, the traditional technologies available for remediation and the scope of emerging‘plant-based remediation’technologies. Phytoremediation, the use of plants to effectively remove or stabilize contaminants from the growth substrate, is a low cost and ecologically friendly alternative to the common‘dig and dump’technologies. The field of phytoremediation has been driven by the intrinsic need for identification of ideal candidate plant species. To date, there are only a very few identified plants which satisfy all of the prerequisites for use in phytoremediation. The review focuses on one such plant species, the common horticultural plant scented geranium (Pelargonium sp.), with demonstrated potential to remediate metal / salt contaminated soils / aqueous systems. The characterization of tolerance and metal / salt accumulation potential of Pelargonium sp. and its efficacy in remediating complex contaminated sites are described. The unique ability of scented geraniums to tolerate excessive amounts of multi-metals, hydrocarbon and salt mixtures, and at the same time to accumulate significant amounts of metal and salt ions in the biomass, renders this plant species as one of the ideal candidates for remediation.

흐름식 아임계수에 의한 경유오염토양의 정화 (Remediation of Diesel Contaminated Soil Using Flowing Subcritical Water)

  • The experimental studies for remediation of diesel contaminated soils were performed using subcritical water in laboratory scale. Contaminated soils from industrial area and artificially contaminated soils were utilized for soil remediation. Experimental system was composed for subcritical water to flow upward through the soil packed column for extracting contaminants. 10 g of contaminated soil was packed into the column and water flow rate was 2 mL/min. To evaluate the effects of temperature, pressure and treatment time on the removal efficiency, temperature was changed from 100$^{\circ}C$ to 350$^{\circ}C$, pressure from 50 bar to 220 bar and treatment time at the predetermined temperature from 0 min to 120 min. The purification efficiency increased as temperature increased. However, the effect of pressure and treatment time was low. Temperature 250$^{\circ}C$, pressure 50 bar and treatment time 30 min were selected for optimal operating condition for this study.

  • Risk and exposure assessment for subsurface environment is very important for both aspects of health and environmental protection as well as making decision of remedial goal for engineering activities. Exposure due to hazardous chemicals in the subsurface environment is essential to assess risk lev121 to individual person, especially from soil and groundwater environmental media. In this paper, the status of soil and groundwater contamination is presented to discuss on the problem for environmental risk assessment. The methodologies of fate and exposure models are also discussed by conducting the case studies of exposure assessment for heavy metals, organic compounds, and dioxin compounds. In addition, the structure of exposure models and available data for model calculation are examined to make clear more realistic exposure scenarios and the application to the practical environmental issues. Three kinds of advanced remediation techniques for soil and groundwater contamination are described in this paper, The most practical method for VOCs is the bio-remediation technique in which biological process due to consortium of microorganisms can be applied. For more effective remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals we have adopted the soil flushing technique and clean-up system using electro-kinetic method. We have also developed the advanced techniques of geo-melting method for soil contaminated by DXNs and PCB compounds. These techniques are planed to introduce and to apply for a lot of contaminated sites in Japan.

  • Remediation Selection Expert System (RSES) is a rule-based expert system which is used far the selection of remediation techniques fur petroleum contaminated sites. In this paper, we describe a fuzzy logic-based sub-system: Site Characterization Sub-System (SCSS). It is an enhancement of the RSES, which is used to analyze the hydraulic properties of contaminated sites. This paper focuses on an explanation on how to apply fuzzy set theory for identification of soil types and hydraulic properties of a contaminated site. To illustrate application of fuzzy set theory to the problem, two sample cases are presented in detail.

  • The purpose of this study is the development of hybrid horizontal electrokinetic(EK) remediation system on rifle range soil under unsaturated conditions. In order to remediate soil polluted by multi-species heavy metals, in pi]of scale, a series of EK remediation tests are carried out. PVC and PDB(Plastic Drain Board) electrode systems that connected with the power supply of constant voltage and vacuum pressure of 0.5kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ are installed, The test results showed that the pH distribution in the sample is below 8, which is maintained until the test is finished, because of the injection of flushing solution. The final concentration, which is normalized by initial concentration, is ranged about 50 to 90%.

유류오염 토양/지하수 정화를 위해 개발된 DSB(Deep-Site Biopile) System 현장적용특성 (Site Application Characteristics of Deep-Site Biopile System for Cleaning Oil-Contaminated Soil/Underground Water)

  • 본 논문은 유류로 오염된 부지를 DSB(Deep-site Biopile) system을 이용하여 정화함으로써 적용 가능한 현장특성을 평가하기 위한 것이다. 오염부지는 유류가 유출되어 깊이 약 2.5 m 부근에 위치하는 지하수의 흐름에 띠라 광범위하게 오염(총 $7,201m^3$) 되어 있었으며, 투수성이 좋은 Sand층으로 구성되어 있다. 부지 내 설치된 배관은 각 지점마다 독립적으로 제어될 수 있도록 하였으며, DSB system의 가동은 24시간을 기준으로 30분 가동/30분 정지되도록 하였다. 오염부지 내 오염원이 저감되는 현황을 파악하기 위하여 DSB system 가동시간에 따른 시료채취 작업을 수행한 결과, DSB system 가동 후 약 30여일 만에 총석유계탄화수소 및 BTEX 오염원이 약 50% 이상 저감되었으며 약 165일이 경과한 후에는 토양오염 확인기준 이하로 저감되어 정화작업이 정상적으로 완료되었다. 이와 같이 본 DSB system은 기존에 적용되어 왔던 생물학적 공법들과는 달리 높은 농도의 유류화합물로 오염되어 있는 토양 및 지하수를 약 6개월의 단기간에 효과적으로 처리할 수 있었으며 정화 system을 지상이 아닌 지중에 설치함으로써 별도의 부지가 확보되지 않은 경우에도 적용할 수 있는 특성이 있음을 알 수 있었다.

자연지질매체를 이용한 PCE로 오염된 지하수 정화 (The effect of permeable geobarrier using gravel bean and silty clay for remediation of PCE contaminated groundwater)

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of proposed permeable eobarrier system for removal of PCE from groundwater. The materials used for the natural geobarrier are gravel bean and silty clay. In addition, the effect of Pyeongtaek soil on PRB assessed in this experiments. It was observed that the adsorption of PCE in natural geobarrier system is eligible for real site. However, natural geobarrier system has various factors based on using materials. Therefore, more laboratory work is needed to study about permeable geobarrier.

  • 토양증기추출공법(SVE)은 불포화 지반상태에서 휘발성 유기화합물(VOCs)과 유류오염 물질을 제거하는데 효과적이고 경제적인 공법중의 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 기존 연약지반의 지반개량시 사용된 연직배수재(PVDs)를 토양증기추출시스템에 적용하여 짧은 공기배출거리로 최대한 신속하게 오염물질을 제거할 수 있게 하여 투기계수가 낮은 지반에서 오염된 토양을 효과적으로 복원할 수 있는 토양증기추출공법을 적용하는데 목적이 있다. 연직배수재를 이용한 토양증기추출시스템 적용시 실제 현장에서 나타나는 무한 경계 조건을 만족하기 위해서 실내에서 파일럿 규모의 오염복원 모형실험을 결과로 유한경계조건 시스템에서 이미지웰 중첩이론을 이용하여 압력분포를 가정하였다. 즉, 압력강하가 없는 일정수두 경계조건 상태와 토조의 상 하부와 같이 흐름이 없는 불투수경계조건 상태를 유지하기 위해서 이미지웰 중첩이론을 도입하여 경계조건을 수립하였다. 결과, 공기흐름률이 증가할수록 흐름비율도 증가하였다. 따라서 높은 흐름률에 대한 흐름비율도 더 커지게 되는 것이고, 최적화과정동안 공기흐름률은 측정 압력수두와 이미지웰 중첩이론으로부터 구해진 이론 압력수두의 오차율에 미치는 가장 중요한 인자로 판단된다.
