Monitoring the performance and estimating the remaining useful life of aging civil infrastructure in the United States has been identified as a major objective in the civil engineering community. Structural health monitoring has emerged as a central tool to fulfill this objective. This paper presents a review of the major structural monitoring programs that have been recently implemented in the United States, focusing on the integrity and performance assessment of large-scale structural systems. Applications where response data from a monitoring program have been used to detect and correct structural deficiencies are highlighted. These applications include (but are not limited to): i) Post-earthquake damage assessment of buildings and bridges; ii) Monitoring of cables vibration in cable-stayed bridges; iii) Evaluation of the effectiveness of technologies for retrofit and seismic protection, such as base isolation systems; and iv) Structural damage assessment of bridges after impact loads resulting from ship collisions. These and many other applications show that a structural health monitoring program is a powerful tool for structural damage and condition assessment, that can be used as part of a comprehensive decision-making process about possible actions that can be undertaken in a large-scale civil infrastructure system after potentially damaging events.
The small punch test have been developed to evaluate the material strength of the power plant components. This small punch test specimen is very small than the conventional strength test specimens. Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) have been applying this test to assess accurately the life of thermal power plant and enhancing the reliability. The small punch test for gas turbine blades is under development. It's possible to compare the relative strength among the same materials having different operation histories. In this paper, the strength reductions of gas turbine materials are investigated by the small punch tests. All materials shows the almost same strength and deformation with the allowable deviation. At the same test temperature, the damaged material has the maximum load value. The strength reduction is not shown in this small punch test results.

Due to the higher ratio of live load to total loads of railway bridges, the accumulated damage by cyclic fatigue is significant. Moreover, it is highly possible that the initiated crack grows faster than that of highway bridges. Therefore, it is strongly needed to assess the safety for the accumulated damage analytically. The initiation and growth of fatigue-crack are related with the stress range, number of cycles, and the stiffness of the structural system. The stiffness of the structural system includes uncertainties of the planning, design, construction and maintenance, which varies as time goes. In this study, the authors developed the design and risk assessment techniques based on the reliability theories considering the uncertainties in load and resistance. For the probabilistic risk assessment of crack growth and the remaining life of the structures by the cyclic load of railway and subway bridges, response surface method (RSM) combined with first order second moment method were used. For composing limit state function, the stress range, stress intensity factor and the remaining life were selected as input important random variables to the RSM program. The probabilities of failure and the reliability indices of fatigue life for the considered specimen under cyclic loads were evaluated and discussed.
Residual wall thicknesses, corrosion rates, and residual life of thirty four samples of cast iron pipes(CIPs) and ductile cast iron pipes(DCIPs) collected from water mains of B city were studied to estimate their remaining service life or optimum time of rehabilitation. The internal maximum corrosion depths of samples measured using a dial gauge after shot blasting were twice higher than the external in most cases. Therefore corrosion of water pipes was much more affected by internal water quality than soil. Residual wall thicknesses of DCIPs were higher than those of CIPs. That reason was thought to be that DCIPs have been protected from internal corrosion by lining cement mortar. Residual life calculated by maximum corrosion rate was ranged up to 44 years with 12.40 years average. Since most CIPs were much deteriorated, rehabilitation plan should be established soon in B city. Residual life of DCIP was 33.52 years average. When cement mortar lining is used up by neutralization of DCIPs. DCIP also should be rehabilitated.

This paper deals with the crack propagation life assessment of T-joint welded structure where typical fatigue cracks have been frequently initiated when the marine vessels experience the storm load. Welding residual stresses are calculated to investigate its effects on the fatigue life. Thereafter the residual stress distribution was applied to the AFGROW life prediction program, which incorporated the loading, the welding residual stress, and the geometric shape of the structure. The fatigue tests of the T-joint welded specimen under storm loading show the beach mark clearly generated on the fractured section of the weldment. The crack propagation life estimated based on the beach mark is compared with that of AFGROW to validate the life prediction. Based on the results, the evaluation method of the remaining fatigue life for T-joint fillet weldment of marine vessel's cargo hold with random load or storm load was established.
Life management technology is required as the failure risk of aged power transformers increases. Asset management technology is developed to evaluate the remaining life, establish the replacement strategies, and decide the optimal investment based on the reliability and economy of power transformers. The remaining life assessment uses data such as installation, operation, maintenance, refurbishment, and failure of power transformers. The optimal investment also uses data such as maintenance, outage, and social costs. To develop the asset management system for power transformers, determining the degradation parameters related to the aging of power transformers and evaluating the condition of power transformers using these parameters are important. In this study, since 1983, 110,000 Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) data have been analyzed to determine the degradation parameters related to the aging of power transformers. The alarm rates of combustible gases ($H_2$, $C_2H_2$, $C_2H_4$, $CH_4$, and $C_2H_6$), TCG, CO, and $CO_2$ were analyzed. The end of life and failure rate (bathtub curve) of power transformers were also calculated based on the failure data from 1981 to 2014. The DGA gases related to discharge, overheating, and insulation degradation were determined based on alarm and failure rates. $C_2H_2$, $C_2H_6$, and $CO_2$ were discharge, oxidation, and insulation degradation parameters related to the aging of power transformers.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between remaining functional teeth and oral health-related quality of life using Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index(GOHAI) in the elderly. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 237 female elderly in Daegu from May to September, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects and Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index(GOHAI). A total of 216 female elderly data were analyzed for oral health status and their GOHAI score. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 version. Logistic regression analysis showed the association of functional teeth and GOHAI score. Results: Number of functional teeth can affect oral health related quality of life in the elderly. When functional teeth is small, the odds ratio(OR) was 2.119(95% CI: 1.215-3.696). After adjusting age, residence type and education, OR was 1.900(95% CI: 1.060-3.399). Policies to preserve natural tooth should be recommended for increasing quality of life in general. Conclusions: This study showed significant association between number of functional teeth and the GOHAI score of the elderly women.
Masonry arch bridges present a large segment of Iranian railway bridge stock. The ever increasing trend in traffic requires constant health monitoring of such structures to determine their load carrying capacity and life expectancy. In this respect, the performance of one of the oldest masonry arch bridges of Iranian railway network is assessed through field tests. Having a total of 11 sensors mounted on the bridge, dynamic tests are carried out on the bridge to study the response of bridge to test train, which is consist of two 6-axle locomotives and two 4-axle freight wagons. Finite element model of the bridge is developed and calibrated by comparing experimental and analytical mid-span deflection, and verified by comparing experimental and analytical natural frequencies. Analytical model is then used to assess the possibility of increasing the allowable axle load of the bridge to 25 tons. Fatigue life expectancy of the bridge is also assessed in permissible limit state. Results of F.E. model suggest an adequacy factor of 3.57 for an axle load of 25 tons. Remaining fatigue life of Veresk is also calculated and shown that a 0.2% decrease will be experienced, if the axle load is increased from 20 tons to 25 tons.

This paper presents a novel evaluation method of life expectancy of power system equipment. The life expectancy means expected remaining lifetime; it can be usefully utilized to maintenance planning, equipment replacement planning, and reliability assessment. The proposed method is composed of three steps. Firstly, a cumulative probability for future years is evaluated for targeted age year. Secondly, the cumulative probability is modeled by well-blown cumulative distribution function(CDF) such as Weibull distribution. Lastly, life expectancy is evaluated as the mean value of the model. Since the model CDF is established in the proposed method, it can also evaluate the probability of equipment retirement within specific years. The developed method is applied to examples of generators of combined cycle power plants to show its effectiveness.
Most fossil power plants and many critical components will be approaching the end of their nominal design life. At the same time, utilities are finding it economically attractive to extend the use of these plants for several more years, Especially Main steam pipe that operated under high temperature and pressure, often under the more severe operating conditions associated with cycling duty, is most important pipe system and critical component in fossil power plant. To extend the viability of older pipe system and to improve the operation and maintenance reliability, some technologies of precise diagnosis and life management have evolved out of the necessity. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The stress analysis was done using ANSYS FEM Code. The branch area from main steam to turbine was the high stressed zone. To evaluate the degradation of the pipe material, replica, visual check, magnetic test, hardness test were done at the welding spot. The degradation level of welding point was E/F, so the remaining life of the welded area was about 0-25%.
