  • The costume of Islam cultural area has been affected by the strict social structure, formed by religion, and traditional costume of Islam has been maintained up to these days under the influence of religion. Islam Traditional Costume, which is the succession of the traditional costume of southwest Asia region, became armed with the form of closed costume due to the chastity and oppression. There are figurative features of Islam Folk Costume; first, the dimensional form due to the ampleness, covering the body, second, the reinforcement of closed form such as chador and burqa, third, the symbolism such as the adornment or incantational ornament, which has been inherited from the former times of Islam era, fourth, the color, simplified with black and white. The aesthetic values of Islam folk costume are represented with 'The beauty of abstinency', suppressing the ornamentation and color, caused by the strict social atmosphere under the influence of the form of traditional costume and religion, 'The beauty of concealment' due to the closeness, with affluent costume forms, covering the body and even concealing the face, and 'The beauty of symbol' which is demonstrated with incantational ornamentation of face and interior decoration. In some nations amongst Islam nations, the wearing of hijab is strictly regulated but black chador and burqa are regarded as negative symbols, representing the closeness and oppression of Islam. It is the product of Orientalism from the western perspective. The Islam Hijab culture is the symbol of oppression towards women, but, on the other hand, it is the device to protect women and the traditional culture, symbolizing the identity.

The survey was conducted on 170 patients, 80 from Korean traditional medical department, and 90 from western medical department. The major results of this study were as below: First, CA patient's medical utilization patterns including selecting medical institution, term of treatment and type of medical institution at first-aid were significantly variated by their socio-demographic characteristics such as religion and job. Second, the perceptions of collaborating care, such as effectiveness and reduction of treatment period, were better at respondents who were hospitalized at oriental medical department and had been experienced with collaborating care. Third, the major contents of collaborating care which utilized by respondents in side of western medicine were physical therapy, x-ray, pathologic diagnosis, and medication, and in side of Korean traditional medicine were acupuncture, herbal medication, moxa cautery, cupping a boil therapy. Fourth, overall satisfaction on collaborating care was good(3.5 of 5.0) and was significantly variated by age and religion. Fifth, respondents perceived that collaborating care was most helpful for rehabilitation and the major problem of current duplicate medical system was increasement of medical expenditures, and the major obstacle of collaborating care was prejudice against each other medicine. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude toward death in Korean nursing students. Method: The sample consisted of 365 baccalaureate nursing students. The questionnaires included questions on sociodemographics and death-related characteristics of the participants, and the Fear of Death and Dying Scale (FODS) to measure the attitude toward death. Result: The mean of the FODS score was 2.63 out of 4, so the participants had a slightly negative attitude toward death. There were statistically significant differences between gender, religion, religion activity, perceived health status, experience of parents' death, experience of friend's death, and overall FODS score. Among the four subscales of overall FODS, the score of the fear of death of self was significantly higher in the participants who experienced clinical practice and who experienced patient's death in the intensive care unit compared to the emergency room. Conclusion: Based on the study results, educational programs to change the attitude toward death are required before clinical practice. Programs need to consider nursing students' gender and religion, and give opportunity to share experiences and feelings about death of family or friend. In addition, using standardized patients and simulators is advised in the need for simulation training.

  • Purpose: This study evaluates the feasibility of Korean Advance Directives (K-AD) developed earlier. Method: From January 1 to February 28, 2013, data were collected from 330 adults through a self-reported questionnaire established by the authors based on literature review and expert consultation. The feasibility of K-AD was multi-dimensionally evaluated through four criteria: cognitive, psychological, document making and socially expecting aspects. Data were analyzed using t tests, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe post hoc tests via the SAS 9.1.3 program. Results: The feasibility of K-AD differed significantly by gender (p=.003), educational level (p<.001), religion (p=.002), and self-reported health status (p=.039). Differences in the level of easiness with K-AD by gender (p=.008) and education (p=.047) were significant. Perceived simplicity of AD differed significantly by religion (p=.005), and the necessity of AD differed significantly by gender (p=.025) and religion (p=.005). Conclusion: K-AD are sufficiently feasible to be tentatively utilized in practice. This is the first study to explore the feasibility of K-AD on the basis of multiple aspects. However, further studies involving diverse populations and methodologies to validate the usefulness of K-AD are warranted.

  • Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC), a concept defined by Baltes and Baltes, is known to predict successful aging. This study was conducted to find out which factors affect Korean elderly people SOC The data for this study were obtained from a survey conducted between March and May 2001, on a sample of middle-class male and female participants over 60 years old. Two hundred and fifty four completed questionnaires were used for final analyses. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson correlations, multiple regressions, multiple response frequencies and sequential threshold methods were used to analyze the data. In order to measure successful aging, the Selective Optimization with Compensation Scale developed by Baltes, Baltes, Freud, and Lang (1996) was used. The SOC scale consists of four subscales, Elective Selection, Loss-based Selection, Optimization, and Compensation. The major findings are summarized in the following. First, the level of SOC by various socio-demographic variables was examined. It tuned out that health status is the most important variable in predicting SOC. Also important was satisfaction with family life. Second, significant correlations were found between SOC and duration of the marriage (negative), practicing a religion, health, and economic stability (all positive). Third, religion and health status affected SOC, but health was a stronger predictor Those who practiced a religion and were healthy had a higher score in SOC as a whole. Fourth, the participants were divided into three groups by their SOC score, and their idea.; of successful aging were compared. The top- and middle-score groups considered satisfaction with family life to be more important, whereas the bottom-score group regarded the social status as more important.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study are to examine and to compare factors causing stress and coping methods between nephrology nurses working in the Hospitals of University and the Hemodialysis Clinics. Method: Data were collected by a direct survey method using a questionnaire from August 13 to August 31, 2001. The sample of 137 nephrology nurses in the twenty-one Hospitals of University and 168 nephrology nurses in the twenty-six Hemodialysis Clinics were selected for a total sample of 305 nurses. Result: Stress according to general characteristics showed a significant difference in religion and in the level of satisfaction for their work. Stress score was the highest in the nurses whose religion was Buddhism(F=4.846, P=0.008) and in the group with 'dissatisfied' for the work in the Hemodialysis unit(F=3.193, P=0.014). The results analyzed coping method according to the general characteristics had a significant difference only in religion(F=16.237, P=0.000). The score for the coping method was the highest in Buddism. The score compared the satisfaction level for their work according to the hospital type, were 3.55 in the Hospital of University group and 3.35 in the Hemodialysis clinic group and these two values were significant different(p<0.05). The mean score of the stress nephrology nurses in the Hospitals of University is 2.79 and that of the stress nephrology nurses in the Hemodialysis clinics is 2.78 of 4 point scale. Among the factors causing stress, items related nursing work and conflict in nurse-patient relationship significantly caused more stress to the nephrology nurses in the Hospitals of University than to those in the Hemodialysis clinics(p<0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that there were some differences in the stress and coping methods between nephrology nurses in the hospitals of University and the Hemodialysis clinics. Further study related to stress management program is needed to decrease stress and use effective coping methods.
