  • The pulverized coal combustion behavior in the coal fired utility boiler has been investigated with the CFD and process analysis techniques. The used commercial software were CFX and PROATES, and these were coupled each other to get more reliable boundary condition set-up, resulting in more reliable solution. For two cases which were the actual operation condition of A power plant, the calculated values from the coupled CFD and process analysis for thermal energy system were compared with the plant data, and the good agreements were obtained for Case 1 and 2. The calculated temperature distributions on the surface of heat exchangers were compared with the plant data for the steam temperatures across heat exchangers, and these explained the actual operating situation very well. The temperature deviation across the final superheater tube, which was believed to be the main cause of the frequent tube failure, were also explained very well with the calculated distributions of gas temperature and radiation on the plane of the final superheater.

  • The present study has tested most of loss models previously published in the open literature and found an optimum set of empirical loss models for a reliable performance prediction of centrifugal compressors. In order to improve the prediction of efficiency curves, this paper recommends a modified parasitic loss model. Predicted performance curves by the proposed optimum set agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of centrifugal compressors. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool for preliminary design and assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.

  • Characterizing the electromagnetic properties of concrete is essential to the enhancement of accuracy and reliability in nondestructive testing of concrete structures using electromagnetic techniques. To establish a data base for the properties of concrete, a measurement technique has been developed and a set of data has been obtained for the frequency range of 1~6 GHz. As moisture content is one of major contributing factors to determine permittivity of dielectric material, moisture content is varied during the measurement. An application of a measurement system which consists of open-ended coaxial probe and automatic network analyzer to concrete and mortar specimens is studied. For this, calibration techniques, size of specimens, and number of measurements necessary to obtain reliable data are investigated. From the measured data, it is shown that moisture content plays an important role to determine the permittivity of specimens. As the moisture content increases. The permittivity of specimens show tendency to approach the permittivity of water.

  • A set of geophysical survey results over an area in Bookil-myun, Chungwon-Gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do is presented; resistivity logging, d.c. sounding, dipole-dipole resistivity, and controlled-source magnetotelluric (CSMT) surveys. These surveys were chosen in this research for the estimation of the basement depth and the delineation of the hydrogeologic structure over the survey area. The results provide an optimal input to a hydrogeologic modeling analysis using the strategies built in GIS software. A total of 14 lines of dipole-dipole resistivity surveys, 25 stations of d.c. sounding and 6 stations of CSMT sounding were performed. In addition 10 boreholes were chosen for resistivity logging to correlate the logs to the surface data. A quantitative information on the hydrogeologic structure over the area is provided by synthesizing the results from various geophysical data and attribute layers are constructed by utilizing a GIS software Arc/ Info. The constructed layers match well to the hydrogeologic structures, which were outlined from the drilling data. The methodology tested and adopted in this study would be useful for providing a more reliable input to the hydrogeologic model setup.

  • A set of exposure factors that reflects the characteristics of individual behavior capable of influencing exposure is essential for risk and exposure assessment. In 2007, the Korean Exposure Factors Handbook was, therefore, issued, driven by the need to develop reliable exposure factors representing the Korean population. The purpose of this study was to overview the development process of the Korean Exposure Factors Handbook and major recommended exposure values for the Korean population to allow information exchanges and comparison of recommended values among nations. The researchers reviewed the domestic data that could be used in the development of exposure factors, confirmed a knowledge gap, and set a priority of development by phases. A methodology to measure exposure factors was established to develop measuring techniques and test their validity. Data were processed or a survey was conducted according to the availability of data. The study thus produced recommended values for 24 exposure factors grouped by general exposure factors, food ingestion factors, and activity factors by setting up a database of exposure factors and carrying out statistical analysis. The study has significantly contributed to reducing the potential uncertainty of the risk and exposure assessment derived by the application of foreign data or research findings lacking representativeness or grounds by developing a set of exposure factors reflecting the characteristics of the Korean people. It will be necessary to conduct revisions in light of the changing statistical values of national data and the exposure factors based on Korean characteristics.

  • Recently, in order to understand the role of the ocean in global problems such as climate change, various researchers have made efforts to integrate and systematically manage the data collected from the world's oceans over the past half century. In Korea, public institutions, research institutes, and universities are carrying out efforts to continuously monitor changes in the marine environment in the waters surrounding Korea. The various types of marine chemical data produced in this way have been independently managed according to the purpose of each institution. Recently, efforts are being made to integrate various data led by the state. In this study, the data quality management method used to systematically manage the data of various types produced by various institutions abroad was explained. In this study, by applying this method, the format of data produced by various domestic institutions is unified, primary quality control of data according to oceanographic characteristics, secondary quality control using reliable data and comparison or standard materials, etc. It aims to provide basic information for carrying out these processes, and ultimately contribute to integrating data collected for various purposes in Korea into a data set that can be compared with each other regardless of the proficiency of producers.

When the laser vision sensor is applied to lap joint welding, however, there are many limitations. Therefore, a specially-designed hardware system has to be used. • A new algorithm for determining noise level is proposed for more reliability in interpreting spectral data for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra of petroleum. In the new algorithm, a moving window with a fixed number of data points was adopted, instead of a fixed m/z width. In the analysis of petroleum, it was found that a moving window of 50,000 or more data points was optimal. This optimized automated peak picking performed well even with frequency-dependant noise in the mass spectrum. Additionally, this fast, automated peak picking algorithm was suitable for the analysis of a large set of samples.
