Purpose: This study proposes the optimal PM (preventive maintenance) policy of leased equipment for lessee's decision-making using two types of reliability condition. Methods: We consider reliability threshold based PM model. Equipment reliability is estimated and used as condition variable. The effect of repair for maintenance is imperfect and represented by age reduction factor. Results: We provide two PM policies. Policy 1 is focused on minimized total cost. This policy guarantees reliability threshold until last maintenance action. Policy 2 focus on maintaining reliability threshold during leased period. The proposed approach provides optimal reliability threshold under number of PM. Through result, we finally construct decision-making process for lessee using reliability threshold and end of reliability. Conclusion: This study provides two PM policy for lessee's decision-making. Through numerical example, we get a result of optimal reliability threshold, number of PM, optimum alternative under lessee's reliability condition.
This paper presents a survey of software reliability modeling and it's application to pre-built software system combined with hardware such as numerical controller based on personal computer systems. Many a systems in these days are much more becoming software intensive and many software intensive systems are safety critical. For this reason, the technique well developed to measure of software reliability is very important for whom to assess such a system. This paper provides a brief idea of method to evaluate such a system's reliability based on hardware performance.
In this paper, we propose a framework of reliability education program for industry people taking charge of reliability improvement or reliability evaluation. To this end, we investigate the situation of how reliability theories or reliability technologies are applied to industry and how industry people have reliability educations. And we also identify reliability theories or technologies which industry people need to ensure. Based on the result of such studies, we design a reliability education program which is appropriate for industry people.

General measure in the reliability is the k-terminal reliability, which is the probability that the specified vertices are connected by the working edges. To compute the k-terminal reliability components are usually assumed to be statistically independent. In this study the modeling and analysis of the k-terminal reliability are investigated when dependency among components is considered. As the size of the network increases, the number of the joint probability parameter to represent the dependency among components is increasing exponentially. To avoid such a difficulty the structured-event-based-reliability model (SERM) is presented. This model uses the combination of the network topology (physical representation) and reliability block diagram (logical representation). This enables us to represent the dependency among components in a network form. Computational algorithms for the k-terminal reliability in SERM are based on the factoring algorithm Two features of the ractoring algorithm are the reliability preserving reduction and the privoting edge selection strategy. The pivoting edge selction strategy is modified by two different ways to tackle the replicated edges occuring in SERM. Two algorithms are presented according to each modified pivoting strategy and illustrated by numerical example.
Based on the reliability theory and limit analysis method, the roof stability of a shallow tunnel is investigated under the condition of surface settlement. Nonlinear Hoek-Brown failure criterion is adopted in the present analysis. With the consideration of surface settlement, the internal energy and external work are calculated. Equating the rate of energy dissipation to the external rate of work, the expression of support pressure is derived. With the help of variational approach, a performance function is proposed to reliability analysis. Improved response surface method is used to calculate the Hasofer-Lind reliability index and the failure probability. In order to assess the validity of the present results, Monte-Carlo simulation is performed to examine the correctness. Sensitivity analysis is used to estimate the influence of different variables on reliability index. Among random variables, the unit weight significantly affects the reliability index. It is found that the greater coefficient of variation of variables lead to the higher failure probability. On the basis of the discussions, the reliability-based design is achieved to calculate the required tunnel support pressure under different situations when the target reliability index is obtained.
This study describes structural reliability analysis of actively-controlled structure for which random vibration analysis is incorporated into the first-order reliability method (FORM) framework. The existing approaches perform the reliability analysis based on the RMS response, whereas the proposed study uses the peak response for the reliability analysis. Therefore, the proposed approach provides us a meaningful performance measure of the active control system, i.e., realistic failure probability. In addition, it can deal with the uncertainties in the system parameters as well as the excitations in single-loop reliability analysis, whereas the conventional random vibration analysis requires double-loop reliability analysis; one is for the system parameters and the other is for stochastic excitations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a numerical example where the proposed approach shows fast and accurate reliability (or inversely failure probability) assessment results of the dynamical active control system against random seismic excitations in the presence of parametric uncertainties of the dynamical structural system.
Reliability-based Topology optimization(RBTO) is to get an optimal design satisfying uncertainties of design variables. Although RBTO based on homogenization and density distribution method has been done, RBTO based on BESO has not been reported yet. This study presents a reliability-based topology optimization(RBTO) using bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization(BESO). Topology optimization is formulated as volume minimization problem with probabilistic displacement constraint. Young's modulus, external load and thickness are considered as uncertain variables. In order to compute reliability index, four methods, i.e., RIA, PMA, SLSV and ADL(adaptive-loop), are used. Reliability-based topology optimization design process is conducted to obtain optimal topology satisfying allowable displacement and target reliability index with the above four methods, and then each result is compared with respect to numerical stability and computing time. The results of this study show that the RBTO based on BESO using the four methods can effectively be applied for topology optimization. And it was confirmed that DLSV and ADL had better numerical efficiency than SLSV. ADL and SLSV had better time cost than DLSV. Consequently, ADL method showed the best time efficiency and good numerical stability.
This paper aims to conduct the reliability-based assessment of the welded joint in the orthotropic steel bridge deck by use of a mesh-insensitive structural stress (MISS) method, which is an effective numerical procedure to determine the reliable stress distribution adjacent to the weld toe. Both the solid element model and the shell element model are first established to investigate the sensitivity of the element size and the element type in calculating the structural stress under different loading scenarios. In order to achieve realistic condition assessment of the welded joint, the probabilistic approach based on the structural reliability theory is adopted to derive the reliability index and the failure probability by taking into account the uncertainties inherent in the material properties and load conditions. The limit state function is formulated in terms of the structural resistance of the material and the load effect which is described by the structural stress obtained by the MISS method. The reliability index is computed by use of the first-order reliability method (FORM), and compared with a target reliability index to facilitate the safety assessment. The results achieved from this study reveal that the calculation of the structural stress using the MISS method is insensitive to the element size and the element type, and the obtained structural stress results serve as a reliable basis for structural reliability analysis.
