  • This study is to review information retrieval techniques of VOCED database. The VOCED database contains internationally relevant information on vocational and adult education, training and related subjects. The software used is CDS/ISIS and the records are indexed using the APSDEP Thesaurus. When searching the VOCED database, various types of search techniques can be used. Multiple word, phrase, boolean logic, term truncation, defind field, and proximity searching techniques or a mixture of all of them, make it possible to find exactly what you want in seconds.

  • With the increasing availability of information in electronic form, it becomes more important and feasible to have automatic methods to retrieve relevant information in the internet. A deficiency of traditional information retrieval systems is that search terms are often different from those indexed by the systems. Thus, user may either retrieve wrong information or miss what they really want. In this paper, we used an automatic query expansion based on term distribution to enhance the performance of information retrieval. Also this thesis proposed the method for setting the threshold according to area distribution in order to choose additional terns.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate what level of difference in precision would be significantly perceived by a human user of an information retrieval system. Not many researches have been conducted with regards to this issue in information retrieval field. Despite the non-significant results, there were several interesting findings in recognizing different levels of precision rates. The correctness of relevance task had little to do with the taken time for the task. In addition, the strong relationship between the subjects' topic familiarity and rate of correct judgments is one of the most interesting results in this study. It turned out that the subjects have more difficulty in a situation they have to judge between the two lists having more non-relevant documents than in a situation they do between the lists haying more relevant documents. Finally, the serious influence from the first top N documents in a list for relevance judgment task has been confirmed.

  • In multimedia information retrieval applications, content-based image retrieval is essential for retrieving relevant multimedia documents. The purpose of our paper is to provide effective representation and efficient retrieval of images when a pixel-level original image is automatically or manually transformaed into its iconic image containing meaningful graphic descriptions, called icon objects. For this, we first propose new spatial match representationschemes to describe spatial relationships between icon objects accurately by expressing them as rectangles, rather than as points. In order to accelerate image searching, we also design an efficient retrieval method using a two-dimensional signature file organization. Finally, we show from our experiment that the proposed representation schemes achieve better retrieval effectiveness than the 9-DLT (Direction Lower Triangular) scheme.

  • The library provides its services to satisfy the user's approach. Naturally, the development of library services may determine by considering the satisfaction of users. It traces users' perceptions regarding subject access highlighting problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject. This study has designed to assess users' attitudes towards the retrievals of Bengali documents in OPAC through subject headings. For a collection of data, a representative sample has drawn from a large and heterogeneous population consisting of users in university libraries of West Bengal using a stratified sampling technique. Subsequently, under each of the universities, users' community was stratified into students, research scholars, and faculty members. Under each stratum, the sample selected on a random basis. The users met personally to collect relevant data, while they came to the library and went on to search OPAC. A structured schedule, prepared for the purpose, was presented before library users and consequently, interviews and interpretations recorded systematically. In this manner, several factors have identified concerning subject searching and retrieval performance for Bengali documents. This study explores the access using subject headings in multilingual information retrieval systems. Moreover, the suitability of subject headings for retrieval of Bengali resources has ascertained from the users' point of view. The findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali subject headings to maintain uniformity and consistency.

  • Achieving the beneficiary goal of recent discovery in human genome project still needs a way to retrieve and analyze the exponentially expanding bio-related information. Research on bio-related fields naturally applies knowledge discovered to the current problem and make inferences to extract new information where shared concepts and data containing information need to be defined and used in a coherent way. In such a professional domain, while the need to help users reduce their work and to improve search results has been emerged. methods for systematic retrieval and adequate exchange of relevant information are still in their infancy. The design of our system aims at improving the quality of information retrieval in a professional domain by utilizing both corpus-based and concept-based ontology. Meta-rules of helping users to make an adequate query are formed into an ontology in the domain. The integration of those knowledge permits the system to retrieve relevant information in a more semantic and systematic fashion. This work mainly describes the query models with details of GUI and a secondary query generation of the system.

  • Spatial match retrieval methods for iconic image databases recognize an image document as several icon symbols. Therefore the iconic symbols are used as primary keys to index the image document. When a user requires content-based retrieval ofimages, a spatial match retrieval method converts a query image into iconic symbols and then retrieves relevant images by accessing stored images. In order to support content-based image retrieval efficiently, we, in this paper, propose spatial match retrieval methods using signatures for iconic image databases. For this, we design new index representations of two-dimensional iconic images and explain implemented system.. In addition, we compare the conventional 9-DLT and our two-dimensional image retrieval method in terms of retrieval precision and recall ratio. We show that our method is more efficient than the conventional method.

  • Effective information gathering and retrieval of the most relevant web documents on the topic of interest is difficult due to the large amount of information that exists in various formats. Current information gathering and retrieval techniques are unable to exploit semantic knowledge within documents in the "big data" environment; therefore, they cannot provide precise answers to specific questions. Existing commercial big data analytic platforms are restricted to a single data type; moreover, different big data analytic platforms are effective at processing different data types. Therefore, the development of a common big data platform that is suitable for efficiently processing various data types is needed. Furthermore, users often possess more than one intelligent device. It is therefore important to find an efficient preference profile construction approach to record the user context and personalized applications. In this way, user needs can be tailored according to the user's dynamic interests by tracking all devices owned by the user.

  • This study was intended to find the use patterns of internet search engines of librarians and to measure the relationship between internet use frequency and the use behavior of internet search engines. The results showed that librarians use Web search engines for academic information retrieval and are satisfied with the search results. The major problems when librarians use search engines were that search engines retrieve many non-relevant documents. As a result of hypotheses test, the relationship between internet frequency and the preference of search engines was not significantly different. On the other hand, the hypotheses that internet frequency affects satisfaction of search results, recognition of importance of search engines, and the need of retraining of librarians for internet information retrieval were shown to be significant.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the hypothesis that the end-user's standards of the selection over retrieved documents affect the selecting of relevant documents after online bibliographic databases searching. To achieve the above-mentioned purpose, online-questionnaires were distributed, via e-mail, to end-users of using online bibliographic databases.
