A chemical batch tests were conducted to evaluate if microwave heating enhances phosphorous release from waste activated sludge (WAS) at pH 2.5, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms have a unique physiological feature, which releases intracellular polyphosphate granules when they are exposed under high temperature environments. Microwave irradiation was found to encourage large amount of phosphorus release from WAS, depending on pH and temperature conditions. Most of phosphorus was released below $59^{\circ}C$ within 30 min. A marked increase in phosphorus release was observed under alkaline or acidic conditions. However, based on control tests for phosphorus release under different pH conditions without microwave heating, the largest amount of phosphorus released by microwave irradiation was found at pH 7, followed by 5, 9, 11. On the other hand, crystallization was conducted to obtain magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) from phosphate released by microwave heating at pH 7. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the recovered crystalline materials were MAP. MAP is an environmentally friendly fertilizer, which slowly releases ammonia and phosphorus in response to the demand of plant root. Thus, the recovered MAP as a phosphate fertilizer is fully expected to play a important role in the reduction of agricultural non-point pollution.
For more than two decades, many investigators have tried a variety of methods for delivering antimicrobial agents to the oral cavity with the objective of eliminating mutans streptococci. In the belief that the effectiveness of chemotherapy might be improved by a more effective delivery system, the intention of the present study was to exploit a new drug delivery system delivering chlorhexidine to the oral cavity. The vehicle delivering chlorhexidine tested in this study was self-curing acrylic resin(polymethyl methacrylate). The powder of the acrylic resin was polymerized with the 5 different liquid preparations, in which $Chlorzoin^{(R)}$ was mixed with five different monomer/Chlorzoin ratios immediately prior to the polymerization, in a stainless steel mold ($40mm{\times}40mm{\times}2mm$). A total of 50 cured resin specimens were divided into 5 groups according to the different monomer preparations. Every specimen was soaked in an airtight container filled with distilled water (100 ml) and then kept in an incubator at $37^{\circ}C$. The solutions (0.8 ml) were collected from the container at every 24 hours, and the amount of released chlorhexidine in the solutions was measured in an ultraviolet spectrophotometer at 250nm. The container was refilled with distilled water every after measurement. This procedure was repeated for 14 days. It was found that chlorhexidine was continuously released from all of the 50 specimens during the experimental period. And it was noted that the pattern of chlorhexidine release was a type of sustained-release preparation, that is, the amount of the released chlorhexidine at the first day in all 5 groups was high (p<0.0001), and then the release was decreased during the rest of the experimental period (p<0.001).
The phenomenon of sediment resuspension in rivers and lakes causes contaminants (heavy metals and nutrients) accumulated in the sediment to leach into the overlying water. As a result, it can lead to changes in toxic effects and eutrophication in the aquatic ecosystem. In this regard, it is important to quantitatively determine the amount of contaminants leached during sediment resuspension. In this study, methods for assessing the amount of released contaminants and the types of contaminants potentially released due to sediment resuspension were studied and summarized. Methods for assessing leaching can be divided into three groups based on the principle of causing resuspension: (i) the oscillating grid chamber method, (ii) the mechanical stirrer method, and (iii) the shaker method. It was confirmed that the types of contaminants that can potentially be released include heavy metals bound to sulfides, as well as exchangeable and labile forms of heavy metals and nutrients. To effectively manage stable aquatic ecosystems in the future, a simplified leaching test method is needed to assess in advance the risks (i.e., changes in toxic effects and eutrophication) that sediment resuspension may pose to aquatic ecosystems.
Eudragit E100 microcapsules containing nisin were prepared and employed to control the ripening of kimchi. The recovery yields of microcapsules without/with nisin ranged from 93.53 to 94.61 % and 92.85 to 94.09 %, respectively. The particle size of microcapsules decreased (>200 to $100\;{\mu}m$) as the amount of aluminium tristearate increased from 6.0 to 15 %. The microcapsules were morphologically spherical and possessed rough surface. Nisin was completely released from the microcapsules within a day at pH 3.0 and within two days at pH 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0, respectively, whereas half the amount of nisin was released at pH 7.0 within two days. During fermentation of kimchi with microcapsules containing nisin, the pH decrease was retarded which resulted in a constant pH of approximately 4.2. The pH of 4.2 was optimal for ripening of kimchi for a longer period of time when compared with samples without nisin.
This study was conducted in order to elucidate the dissemination mechanism of P. olseni using field and laboratory experiments. For this purpose, we quantified the level of P. olseni infection in buried (healthy) and surfaced (gapped) R. philippinarum from a clam bed on Wi-do Island on the west coast of Korea. In addition, the levels of internal and released P. olseni cells from artificially infected (and later dead) R. philippinarum were monitored for 8 days using the RFTM-2 M NaOH lysis method. Our results indicate that P. olseni cells in buried R. philippinarum was $2,655,625{\pm}1,536,936cells/clam$; the level in gapped R. philippinarum was considerably lower, $28,203{\pm}24,889cells/clam$ (p < 0.05). In the laboratory experiment, the P. olseni cells remained in the host tissue 2 days after death was approximately 50% lower than the level of infection measured in living clams. The level dropped to 20% 4 days after death and to 1.5% 6 days after death; eight days after death, P. olseni cells were undetectable since the R. philippinarum flesh had completely decomposed. The level of released cells on the day of death was only 0.05% of the internal level in live R. philippinarum; however, the level increased to 2.3% 5 days after death then gradually decreased and no released cells were detected 8 days after death. Therefore, our laboratory experiment suggest that the low level of P. olseni infection observed in gapped R. philippinarum at Wi-do Island could be caused by lysis of the most of P. olseni cells during the decomposition of dead R. philippinarum tissues. Until the end of decomposition of R. philippinarum, 6.68% of the total amount of P. olseni was released within 8 days. Our study showed that the amount of P. olseni cells from dead host is a considerably higher level than naturally released from healthy R. philippinarum, suggesting that death of the host plays an important role in the dissemination of P. olseni.

In semi-arid countries such as Namibia, the flooding unexpectedly happens in a rainy season, causing losses in the yield of upland-adapted cereal crop. In flooding conditions, rice roots sequentially form aerenchyma and a barrier to radial oxygen loss (ROL), and oxygen is released into the rhizosphere near the root tips. Iijima et al. (2016) and Awala et al. (2016) reported that close mixed-planting with rice can mitigate the flood stress of co-growing upland-adapted cereal crop by modifying their rhizosphere microenvironments via the oxygen released from the rice roots. Moreover, by using the model system of hydroponic culture, it was confirmed that oxygen from rice roots was transferred to co-growing upland-adapted cereal crop in close mixed planting system (Kawato et al., 2016). However, it is not sure whether the ability of oxygen release varies among rice cultivars, because Kawato et al. (2016) used only one japonica cultivar, Nipponbare (Oryza sativa). The objective of this study was to compare the ability of oxygen release in rhizosphere among rice cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a climate chamber in Kindai University. We used 10 rice cultivars from three different rice species (O. sativa (var. japonica (2), var. indica (3)), Oryza glaberrima Steud. (2) and their interspecific progenies (3)) to compare the ability of oxygen release from the roots. According to the method by Kawato et al. (2016), the dissolved oxygen concentration of phase I (with shoot) and phase II (without shoot) were measured by a fiber optic oxygen-sensing probe. The oxygen released from rice roots was calculated from the difference of the measurements between phase I and phase II. The result in this study indicated that all of the rice cultivars released oxygen from their roots, and the amount of released oxygen was significantly correlated with the above-ground biomass (r = 0.710). The ability of oxygen release (the amount of the oxygen release per fresh root weight) of indica cultivars (O. sativa) tended to be higher as compared with the other cultivars. On the other hand, that of African rice (O. glaberrima) and the interspecific progenies tended to be lower. These results suggested that the ability of oxygen release widely varies among rice cultivars, and some of indica cultivars (O. sativa) may be suitable for close mixed-planting to mitigate flood stress of upland-adapted cereal crop.
The possibility of using polypyrrole as a drug delivery system(DDS) has been studied using indicate (Phenol red) and substance with therapeutic activity(Sodium salicylate). In aqueous solution, negative potential is applied to polypyrrole then anion(with therapeutic activity) of sodium salicylate is released by redox processes of polypyrrole. The release amount of anionic drugs from polypyrrole is measured by UV-visible spectrometer which can measure UV-absorbance of materials. Electrode area that use for release amount measurement is$50mm^{2}(5{\times}10mm)$,and thickness of polypyrrole membrane is $15{\mu}m$. DC 1V applied in saline solution, the release amount according to time increased gradually. In various electrode area, release amount of anionic drug is directly to electrode area.
The amount of cesium released from the leaching of spent fuels in contact with and without the compacted bentonite bloc]t which was compacted as the density of $1.4g/\textrm{cm}^3$, up to 5.7 years were measured and the empirical formula of the fractional release rate of cesium were derived from these measured values. The empirical formulas show that the long-term release rate of cesium under a repository would become a constant, as about $3{\times}10_{-6}$ fraction/day, after a certain period. The cumulative fractions of cesium released from the spent fuel with bentonite and with copper and stainless steel sheets were steadily increased, but the fraction from bare fuel was rapidly increased and then sluggishly increased. However, the remained value except its gap inventory from the cumulative fraction of cesium released from bare fuel was almost very close to the others. This suggests that the initial release of cesium from bare fuel might be dependant on its gap inventory.
