  • One of the imminent problems to be solved within wireless sensor network is to balance out energy dissipation among deployed sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a transmission relay method of communications between BS (Base Station) and CHs (Cluster Heads) for balancing the energy consumption and extending the average lifetime of sensor nodes by the fuzzy logic application. The proposed method is designed based on LEACH protocol. The area deployed by sensor nodes is divided into two groups based on distance from BS to the nodes. RCH (Relay Cluster Head) relays transmissions from CH to BS if the CH is in the area far away from BS in order to reduce the energy consumption. RCH decides whether to relay the transmissions based on the threshold distance value that is obtained as a output of fuzzy logic system, Our simulation result shows that the application of fuzzy logic provides the better balancing of energy depletion and prolonged lifetime of the nodes.

  • Recent research activities in cooperative communication focus on achieving energy efficiency and reliability. Relay selection strategy for cooperative communication improves the performance significantly. However, due to imbalance consumption of power, network might die earlier and more than 90% energy remains unused. In this paper, we provide a framework of an energy-efficient medium access control protocol that minimizes these problems and improves energy efficiency.

  • Many unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications have been employed for performing data collection in facilitating tasks such as surveillance and monitoring objectives in remote and dangerous environments. In light of the fact that most of the existing UAV relaying applications operate in conventional half-duplex (HD) mode, a full-duplex (FD) based UAV relay aided wireless network is investigated, in which the UAV relay helps forwarding information from the source (S) node to the destination (D). Since the activated UAV relays are always floating and flying in the air, its channel state information (CSI) as well as channel capacity is a time-variant parameter. Considering decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol in UAV relays, the cooperative relaying channel capacity is constrained by the relatively weaker one (i.e. in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)) between S-to-relay and relay-to-D links. The channel capacity can be optimized by adaptively optimizing the transmit power of S and/or UAV relay. Furthermore, a hybrid HD/FD mode is enabled in the proposed UAV relays for adaptively optimizing the channel utilization subject to the instantaneous CSI and/or remaining self-interference (SI) levels. Numerical results show that the channel capacity of the proposed UAV relay aided wireless networks can be maximized by adaptively responding to the influence of various real-time factors.

  • In this paper, we consider a two-way relay non-orthogonal multiple access (TWR-NOMA) system with residual hardware impairments (RHIs) and channel estimation errors (CEEs), where two group users exchange their information via the decode-and-forward (DF) relay by using NOMA protocol. To evaluate the performance of the considered system, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability of the two groups users are derived in closed-form. Moreover, the asymptotic outage behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is examined and the diversity order is derived and discussed. Numerical simulation results verify the accuracy of theoretical analyses, and show that: i) RHIs and CEEs have a deleterious effects on the outage probabilities; ii) CEEs have significant effects on the performance of the near user; iii) Due to the RHIs, CEEs, inter-group interference and intra-group interference, there exists error floors for the outage probability.

  • We analyze the performance of multistage cooperation in decode-and-forward relay networks where the transmission between source and destination takes place in $T{\geq}2$ equal duration and orthogonal time phases with the help of relays. The source transmits only in the first time phase. All relays that can decode the source's transmission forward the source's message to the destination in the second time phase, using a space-time code. During subsequent time phases, the relays that have successfully decoded the source message using information from all previous transmitting relays, transmit the space-time coded symbols for the source's message. The non-decoding relays keep accumulating information and transmit in the later stages when they are able to decode. This process continues for T cooperation phases. We develop and analyze the outage probability of multistage cooperation protocol under orthogonal relaying. Through analytical results, we obtain the near-optimal placement strategy for relays that gives the best performance when compared with most other candidate relay location strategies of interest. For different relay network topologies, we also investigate an interesting tradeoff between an increased SNR and decreased spectral efficiency as the number of cooperation stages is increased. It is also shown that the largest multistage cooperation gain is obtained in the low and moderate SNR regime.

  • In this paper, we propose a new relay selection algorithm for a two-way multiple relay channel. In the two-way multiple relay channel, two users exchange information with each other via multiple relays. The relays use a decode-and-forward or amplify-and-forward protocol, and exploit the combining process of the received packets to reduce the required channel resources. In the multiple relay network, diversity gain is achieved as the number of relays increases, and various schemes are proposed. In this paper, we propose a single best relay selection scheme based on instantaneous channel conditions. First of all, relays obtain the instantaneous channel state information in the handshaking process, and a single best relay is selected in a distributed methods prior to data transmissions. The relay selection metric is proposed so that the end-to-end channel condition is evaluated based on the intantaneous channel state informations. Simulation results show that the proposed relay selection algorithm achieve the increased throughput and diversity order when the number of potential relays is increased.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient routing protocol to achieve an optimal route searching process of the network lifetime by balancing power consumption per node. The proposed protocols aim at finding energy-efficient paths at low protocol power. In our protocol, each intermediate node keeps power level and branch number of child nodes and it transmits the data the nearest neighbor node. Our protocol may minimize the energy consumption at each node, thus prolong the lifetime of the system regardless of the location of the sink outside or inside the cluster. In the proposed protocol for inter-cluster communication, a cluster head chooses a relay node from its adjacent cluster heads according to the node's residual energy and its distance to the base station. Simulation results show that proposed protocol successfully balances the energy consumption over the network, and achieves a remarkable network lifetime improvement as highly as 7.5%.

  • In this paper, we propose an open protocol to be employed between a smart meter concentrator and a metering data collection server, and also evaluate its performance. Legacy concentrators performs the connection establishment and data gathering operations with DLMS/COSEM protocol standards. However, we note that there are no standardized protocols between the concentrator and the collection server, which inevitably conduces each commercial smart metering system to have its own proprietary protocol. In order to solve this problem, we propose an open protocol - Smart Meter Concentrator Control Protocol(SMCCP) by extending the existing standard protocol(DLMS/COSEM). The SMCCP can provide the proxy mode to enable efficient transmission between the concentrator and the data collection server. It also can support the relay mode to enable a direct communication between the data collection server and each far end smart meter. We also implement an emulator system and a protocol analyzer to provide its operation. In addition, we evaluate the session holding time and the link usage ratio in both relay and proxy modes with OMNET++ simulator.

  • The deployment of an incremental hybrid decode-amplify and forward relaying scheme is a promising and superior solution for cellular networks to meet ever-growing network traffic demands. However, the selection of a suitable relaying protocol based on the signal-to-noise ratio threshold is important in realizing an improved quality of service. In this paper, an incremental hybrid relaying protocol is proposed using polar codes. The proposed protocol achieves a better performance than existing turbo codes in terms of capacity. Simulation results show that the polar codes through an incremental hybrid decode-amplify-and-forward relay can provide a 38% gain when ${\gamma}_{th(1)}$ and ${\gamma}_{th(2)}$ are optimal. Further, the channel capacity is improved to 17.5 b/s/Hz and 23 b/s/Hz for $2{\times}2$ MIMO and $4{\times}4$ MIMO systems, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to achieve the optimal solution.
