Circuit Model for the Effect of Nonradiative Recombination in a High-Speed Distributed-Feedback Laser

  • Based on single-mode rate equations, we present an improved equivalent-circuit model for distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers that accounts for the effects of parasitic parameters and nonradiative recombination. This equivalent-circuit model is composed of a parasitic circuit, an electrical circuit, an optical circuit, and a phase circuit, modeling the circuit equations transformed from the rate equations. The validity of the proposed circuit model is verified by comparing simulation results to measured results. The results show that the slope efficiency and threshold current of the model are 0.22 W/A and 13 mA respectively. It is also shown that increasing bias current results in the increase of the relaxation-oscillation frequency. Moreover, we show that the larger the bias current, the lower the frequency chirp, increasing the possibility of extending the transmission distance of an optical-fiber communication system. The results indicate that the proposed circuit model can accurately predict a DFB laser's static and dynamic characteristics.

특정 호흡수에서 행한 통제호흡이 심박변이도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Paced Breathing in Specific Respiration Rate on Heart Rate Variability)

  • Objectives We observed what effects of Paced Breathing(PB) in specific respiration rate have on heart rate variability (HRV) according to Sasang Constitution.Methods HRV of 72 healthy participants in sitting position was recorded while they carried out usual breathing, 0.2Hz, 0.1Hz, and 0.05Hz PB each 5 minutes in consecutive order. Five minute of relaxation was permitted between each breathing. Finally, HRV indices were statictically analyzed of 32 participants (SOEUM: 11, SOYANG: 10, TAEEUM: 11) after data out of accord with respiration rate or outliers were excluded.Results and Conclusions According to respiration rates, there was no statistical significance of HRV among Sasang Constitution. Regardless of Sasang Constituion, 0.2Hz PB increased mean heart rate and decreased natural logarithmic low frequency(lnLF) oscillation of HRV without the change of natural logarithmic high frequency(lnHF), while 0.1Hz PB increased lnLF and standard deviation of N-N interval(SDNN), and slightly decreased lnHF without the change of mean heart rate. 0.05 Hz PB also showed the same effect as 0.1Hz PB, but was impracticable.

Picosecond Dynamics of CN--Ligated Ferric Cytochrome c after Photoexcitation Using Time-resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy

  • The dynamics of the $CN^-$-ligated ferric cytochrome c (CytcCN) in $D_2O$ at 283 K following Q-band photoexcitation at 575 nm was observed using femtosecond time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy. The equilibrium vibrational spectrum of the CN stretching mode of CytcCN shows two overlapping bands: one main band (82%) at $2122\;cm^{-1}$ with $23\;cm^{-1}$ full width at half maximum (fwhm) and the other band (18%) at $2116\;cm^{-1}$ with $7\;cm^{-1}$ fwhm. The time-resolved spectra show bleaching of the CN fundamental mode of CytcCN and two absorption features at lower energies. The bleach signal and both absorption features are all formed within the time resolution of the experiment (< 200 fs) and decay with a life time of 1.9 ps. One transient absorption feature, appearing immediately red to the bleach signal, results from the thermal excitation of low-frequency modes of the heme that anharmonically couple to the CN fundamental mode, thereby shifting the CN mode to lower energies. The shift of the CN mode decays with a lifetime of 2 ps, equivalent to the time scale for vibrational cooling of the low-frequency heme modes. The other transient absorption feature, which is 3.3 times weaker than the bleach signal and shifted $27\;cm^{-1}$ toward lower energies, is attributed to the CN mode in an electronically excited state where the CN bond is weakened with a lowered extinction coefficient. These observations suggest that photoexcited CytcCN mainly undergoes ultrafast radiationless relaxation, causing photo-deligation of $CN^-$ from CytcCN highly inefficient. As also observed in $CN^-$-ligated myoglobin, inefficient ligand photodissociation might be a general property of $CN^-$-ligated ferric hemes.

Electroencephalographic brain frequency in athletes differs during visualization of a state of rest versus a state of exercise performance: a pilot study

  • Objective: Psychomotor imagery has been widely used to improve motor performance and motor learning. Recent research suggests that during visualization, changes occur in neurophysiological networks that make physical practice more effective in configuring functional networks for skillful behaviors. The aim of our pilot study was to determine if there was change and to what extent there was differentiation in modulation in electroencephalography (EEG) frequencies between visualizing a state of rest and a state of exercise performance and to identify the preponderant frequency. Design: Quasi-experimental design uncontrolled before and after study. Methods: EEG brain wave activity was recorded from 0-40 Hz from nine cerebral cortical scalp regions F3, Fz, F4, C3, Cz, C4, P3, POz, and P4 with a wireless telemetric EEG system. The subjects, while sitting on a chair with eyes closed, were asked to visualize themselves in a state of routine rest/relaxation and after a period of time in a state of their routine exercise performance. Results: The gamma frequency, 31-40 Hz, (${\gamma}$) was the predominant wave band in differentiation between visualizing a state of rest versus visualizing a state of exercise performance. Conclusions: We suggest these preliminarily findings show the EEG electrocortical activity for athletes is differentially modulated during visualization of exercise performance in comparison to rest with a predominant ${\gamma}$ wave band frequency observed during the state of exercise. Further controlled experimental studies will be performed to elaborate these observations and delineate the significance to optimization of psychomotor exercise performance.

천연 약초 추출 향이 뇌파 활성과 자율신경계에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Natural Herbal Extracts on Electrical Brain Activity and Autonomic Nervous System)

  • 문헌에 따르면, 천연 추출물 또는 천연 에센셜 오일을 포함한 화장품 향의 흡입으로 뇌파 변화가 유도된다는 사례가 보고되어 있다. Angelica gigas (AG)와 Cnidium officinale (CO)는 건강을 개선하는 전통 약재로 동아시아 국가에서 널리 사용되고 있으나, 이들의 향을 흡입하여 뇌파(EEG)기록을 통해 뇌 활동 변화를 평가한 이전 보고는 없었다. 본 연구에서는, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis (Compositae), AG, and CO와 같은 천연 약초 추출물의 향을 흡입하고 후각 자극으로 감정적인 상태 변화가 야기되는지에 대한 평가를 하였으며, 20 ~ 30 세 시험대상자를 대상으로 천연 약초 추출물의 향을 흡입하기 전과 후에 뇌 활동을 EEG기록을 통해 확인하였다. 또한 향을 흡입하는 동안 자율신경계 변화는 심전도(ECG) 기록을 통해 심장의 전기적 활동을 관찰하였다. 시험 결과, 양성 대조군인 라벤더를 포함하여 Compositae, AG, CO 추출물의 향을 맡으면 뇌의 전반 영역에서 뇌파의 relative alpha power 와 alpha/beta ratio가 크게 증가하는 결과를 나타냈다. ECG 기록은 Compositae 향의 흡입이 low-frequency/high-frequency 비율을 유의미한 수준으로 감소시켰다. 결론적으로 전통 약초 추출물 향의 흡입은 뇌파와 자율신경계 변화가 유도하여 감성적 편안함과 심리적 안정감에 도움을 줄 수 있음을 확인하였다.

가토 문맥에 있어서 비 코린성, 비 아드레나린성 억제성 반응에 관한 약리학적 특징 (Pharmacological Characteristics of Non-cholinergic, Non-adrenergic Inhibitory Responses in Rabbit Portal Vein)

  • 가토의 문맥 절편에서 비 코린성-비 아드레나린성 이완반응에 대한 약리학적 성질을 규명하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 가토 문맥 절편에 있어서 비 코린성-비 아드레나린성 전기자극반응은 자극빈도의 증가에 따라 예민하게 증가하였으며, $Ca^{++}$에 이하여 크게 영향을 받았고, $Ca^{++}$농도를 달리하고 ATP를 첨가하여 이완반응은 일어났으나 이는 전극자극에 의한 반응에는 영향을 주지 아니하였다. 2) ATP, ADT 및 adenosine에 대한 반응은 용량에 의존하여 이완반응은 보였으나 자극에 의한 반응에는 크게 영향을 미치지 아니하였다. 3) Quinine과 isobutyl-methyl xanthine을 투여하였을 때 용량에 따라 긴장도의 하강을 나타내었을 뿐 이완반응은 길항하지 아니하였다. 4) 4-AP, $1{\mu}g/ml$존재하에서 전기자극에 대한 이완반응 폭은 서서히 증가하였고 대량의 4-AP에 의하여 는 긴장도가 하강하였다. 5) 4-AP반복투여후의 전기자극에 이한 반응은 대조군과 비교하여 큰 변화가 없었으나, adenosine을 반복투여하였을 때는 대조군에 비하여 증가를 나타내었다. 6) $^3H-purine$의 유출은 전기자극에 의하여는 경미하나 ATP나 adenosine투여로 현저히 증가하였으며, 4-AP, TTX 및 adenosine 반복투여후에도 $^3H-efflux$의 변동을 나타내지 아니하였다.

양자펌프 억제제에 반응을 보이지 않은 인후두 역류질환 환자에서 고해상도 식도 내압검사의 분석 (Analysis of High-Resolution Manometry Results in LPRD Patients Who Do Not Response to PPI Medication)

  • Background and Objectives : Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) originates from regurgitation of gastric contents to the laryngopharynx, and it is relatively common disease in otolaryngology. Proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) medication is frequently using treatment method in present time, but controversies exist regarding treatment for it. High-resolution manometry (HRM) system is a newly developed device that using 36 channels and pressure topography plotting program, checking the function and status of esophagus. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical usefulness of HRM in LPRD patients who do not response to PPI medication. Materials and Method : From July 2009 to July 2010, a total of 99 patients who were suspected LPRD according to symptoms (Reflux Symptom Index >13) and laryngoscopic findings (Reflux Finding Score >7) were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Patients were consisted of 31 men and 68 women, the mean age was 51.8 years, the mean BMI was 22.46. Patients have taken PPI medication for 2 months, after medication, they performed HRM. Comparative analysis was performed with results of the difference in symptoms. Results : In 99 patients, 37 patients (37.4%) show not improvement of LPRD symptoms after PPI medication. Among them, 18 patients (48.6%) showed abnormal findings that were classified as Peristaltic dysfunction (38.9%), Diffuse esophageal spasm (11.1%), Relaxation impairment of LES (11.1%), Achalasia (5.6%), Hypotensive LES (11.1%), Relaxation impairment of UES (11.1%), Nutcracker esophagus (5.6%), Decreased resting pressure (5.6%). Other 62 patients (62.6%) show improvement of LPRD symptoms, 23 patients (37.1%) showed abnormal findings. Most common finding was Peristaltic dysfunction (43.4%) More prevalent abnormal findings of HRM were found in patients who revealed no response to PPI medication (48.6% vs. 37.1%), but it does not reach the statistical significance. Conclusion : Although statistical significances is not showed, the difference observed in the frequency of HRM abnormal finding between response and no response for PPI medication. It has been estimated that HRM may be used to determine differential diagnosis in patients with LPRD. Further studies in lager population containing normal controls will be needed to prove clinical usefulness.

조직 특성 MR 조영제를 이용한 쥐의 간세포막의 물분자 교환 및 투과율의 MR 측정기법 (MR Study of Wate Exchange and Cell Membrane Permeability in Rat Liver Cells Using a Tissue-Specific MR Contrast Agent)

  • 목적 : 간특정 MR 조영제를 이요하여 간세포의 세포막을 통한 물분자의 교환 및 세포막 투과율을 정확히 측정 할 수 있는 MR 기법을 개발하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 쥐의 간세포를 분리하여 낸 후 NMR 측정을 시도하엿다. 모든 실험은 0.02MHz부터 60 MHz까지 양성자의 Larmor 주파수를 변화시킬 수 있는 IBM형 field cycling relaxometer를 사용하여 시행하였으며 spin-echo 펄스열을 사용하여 T1 자기이완시간을 측정하였다. 전오도의 간특정 조영제인 Gd-EOB-DTPA를 함유하고 있는 간세포 샘플로부터 획득한 T1 데이터를 연속분포 분석법을 사용하여 분석하였으며 이때 이론적 모델로는 Two compartmental exchange 모델을 이용하였다. 결과 : 간세포내의 물분자의 평균 거주시간은 약 250 msec이며 간세포막의 투과율에 대한 최저치는 $(1.3{\pm}0.1){\;}{\times}{\;}10^{-3}cm/sec$ 이었다. 자기이완시간의 연속적인 분포도를 구할 수 있는 CONTIN 분석기법을 적용한 결과 확산적 물분자 교환이 일어남을 밝혔고 이러한 확산적 교환의 정도가 간세포의 경우 세포내 공간에서는 작지 않다는 사실을 규명 할 수 있었다. 결론 : 연속분포 분석기법을 적용하는 경우 Gd-EOB-DTPA는 간세포에서의 물분자의 교환정도 및 세포막의 물분자에 대한 투과율을 측정하는데 매우 유용한 방법임을 확인하였고 간세포에서의 물분자의 교환속도는 적혈구에서의 물분자 교환 속도에 비해 매우 느리다는 사실을 확인하였다. 따라서 조직 특정 조영제는 해당 조직 혹은 세포의 세포막 투과율과 같은 생리학적 정보를 알아낼 수 있는 기능적 조영제로서의 유용성을 입증할 수 있었다.

Strain-Relaxed SiGe Layer on Si Formed by PIII&D Technology

  • Strain-relaxed SiGe layer on Si substrate has numerous potential applications for electronic and opto- electronic devices. SiGe layer must have a high degree of strain relaxation and a low dislocation density. Conventionally, strain-relaxed SiGe on Si has been manufactured using compositionally graded buffers, in which very thick SiGe buffers of several micrometers are grown on a Si substrate with Ge composition increasing from the Si substrate to the surface. In this study, a new plasma process, i.e., the combination of PIII&D and HiPIMS, was adopted to implant Ge ions into Si wafer for direct formation of SiGe layer on Si substrate. Due to the high peak power density applied the Ge sputtering target during HiPIMS operation, a large fraction of sputtered Ge atoms is ionized. If the negative high voltage pulse applied to the sample stage in PIII&D system is synchronized with the pulsed Ge plasma, the ion implantation of Ge ions can be successfully accomplished. The PIII&D system for Ge ion implantation on Si (100) substrate was equipped with 3'-magnetron sputtering guns with Ge and Si target, which were operated with a HiPIMS pulsed-DC power supply. The sample stage with Si substrate was pulse-biased using a separate hard-tube pulser. During the implantation operation, HiPIMS pulse and substrate's negative bias pulse were synchronized at the same frequency of 50 Hz. The pulse voltage applied to the Ge sputtering target was -1200 V and the pulse width was 80 usec. While operating the Ge sputtering gun in HiPIMS mode, a pulse bias of -50 kV was applied to the Si substrate. The pulse width was 50 usec with a 30 usec delay time with respect to the HiPIMS pulse. Ge ion implantation process was performed for 30 min. to achieve approximately 20 % of Ge concentration in Si substrate. Right after Ge ion implantation, ~50 nm thick Si capping layer was deposited to prevent oxidation during subsequent RTA process at $1000^{\circ}C$ in N2 environment. The Ge-implanted Si samples were analyzed using Auger electron spectroscopy, High-resolution X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy to investigate the depth distribution, the degree of strain relaxation, and the crystalline structure, respectively. The analysis results showed that a strain-relaxed SiGe layer of ~100 nm thickness could be effectively formed on Si substrate by direct Ge ion implantation using the newly-developed PIII&D process for non-gaseous elements.
