In an attempt to investigate the nonlinear dynamics such as shock, shear, and turbulence associated with ultra-relativistic jets, we develop a new relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) code based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. It is a 5th-order accurate, finite-difference scheme, which has been widely used for solving hyperbolic systems of conservation equations. The code is parallelized with MPI and OpenMP. Through an extensive set of tests, the accuracy and efficiency of different WENO reconstructions, and different time discretizations are assessed. Different implementations of the equation of state (EOS) for relativistic fluid are incorporated, As the fiducial setup for simulations of ultra-relativistic jets, we adopt the EOS in Ryu et al. (2006) to treat arbitrary adiabatic index of relativistic fluid, the WENO-Z reconstructions to minimize numerical dissipation without loss of stability, and the strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta (SSPRK) method to achieve stable time stepping with large CFL numbers. In addition, the code includes a high-order flux averaging along the transverse directions for multi-dimensional problems, and the modified eigenvalues for the acoustic modes to effectively control the carbuncle instability. We find that the new code performs satisfactorily simulations of ultra-relativistic jets.
I discuss implications of gamma-ray emission from blazars based on electron acceleration by shock waves in a relativistic jet. The number spectrum of electrons turns out to be a broken power law; while at low energies the power law index has a universal value of 2, at high energies it steepens to an index of 3 because of strong radiative cooling. This spectrum can basically reproduce the observed spectral break between X-rays and gamma-rays. I show that energetics of relativistic jets can be well explained by this model. I estimate physical quantities of the relativistic jets by comparing the prediction with observations. The results show that the jets are particle dominated and are comprised of electron-positron pairs. A connection between gamma-ray emission and radiation drag is also discussed.
We investigate the morphology of Active Galactic Nuclei(AGN) jets. AGN jets propagate over kpc $\~$ Mpc and their beam velocities are close to the speed of light. The reason why many jets propagate over so long a distance and sustain a very collimated structure is not well understood. It is argued that some dimensionless parameters, the density and the pressure ratio of the jet beam and the ambient gas, the Mach number of the beam, and relative speed of the beam compared to the speed of light, are very useful to understand the morphology of jets namely, bow shocks, cocoons, nodes etc. The role of each parameters has been studied by numerical simulations. But more research is necessary to understand it systematically. We have developed 2D relativistic hydrodynamic code to analyze relativistic jets. We pay attention to the propagation velocity which is derived from 1D momentum balance in the frame of the working surface. We show some of our models and discuss the dependence of the morphology of jets on the parameter.
We study the structures and dynamics of flows generated by ultra-relativistic jets on kpc scales through three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations. We employ a newly developed RHD code, equipped with the WENO-Z reconstruction, the SSPRK time discretization, and an equation of state that closely approximates the single-component perfect gas in relativistic regime. Exploring a set of models with various parameters, we confirm that the well-known Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy is primarily determined by the jet power, whereas the morphology of simulated jets also depends on the secondary parameters such as the momentum injection rate and the ratio of the jet to background pressure. Utilizing high resolution capabilities of the newly developed code, we examine in detail the dynamical properties of complex flows in different parts of jet-produced structures, and present the statistics of nonlinear dynamics such as shock, shear, and turbulence.
We study ultra-relativistic jets on several tens kpc scales through three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations using a new RHD code based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. Utilizing the high-resolution and high-accuracy capabilities of the new code, we especially explore the structures and energetics of nonlinear flows, such as shocks, turbulence, velocity shear in different parts of jets. We find that the mildly relativistic shocks which form in the jet backflow are most effective for the shock dissipation of the jet energy, while the turbulent dissipation is largest either in the backflow or in the shocked ICM, depending on the jet parameter. The velocity shear is strongest across the jet flow to the cocoon boundary. Our results should have important implications for the studies of high-energy cosmic-ray production in radio galaxies.

Jets of compact radio sources are highly relativistic and Doppler boosted, making studies of their intrinsic properties difficult. Observed brightness temperatures can be used to study the intrinsic physical properties of the relativistic jets. The intrinsic properties of relativistic jets depend on inner jet models. We aimed to observationally test the inner jet models. The very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) cores of compact radio sources are optically thick at a given frequency. The distance of the core from the central engine is inversely proportional to the frequency. Under the equipartition condition between the magnetic field energy and particle energy densities, the absolute distance of the VLBI core can be predicted. We compiled the brightness temperatures of VLBI cores at various radio frequencies of 2, 8, 15, and 86~GHz. The brightness temperatures in the rest frame were investigated in the sub-parsec regions of the compact radio sources. From the vicinity of the central engine, the brightness temperatures increased slowly and then rose with steeper slope, indicating that the Lorentz factor increases along the jet. This implies that the jets are accelerated in the (sub-)parsec regions from the central engine.
Studies of compact radio sources since the discovery of quasars have revealed a variety of physical properties: both in morphology and kinematics from sub-parsec to Mega-parsec scales, radiation mechanisms at frequencies from the radio to ${\gamma}$-rays, theoretical models for relativistic jets, etc. The frontier discovery of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations for the compact extragalactic radio sources have triggered the extensive studies to investigate the underlying physics of the relativistic jets. In this context, the highest resolution VLBI surveys of ultra-compact radio sources provide the potentially important statistical basis for future study. As a tool of this study, a new millimeter VLBI network in Korea, the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) will paly an important role. We present results from large VLBI surveys of compact radio sources at millimeter wavelengths and discuss the prospects with the KVN on this study.
To investigate the acceleration of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in relativistic jets of FR-II galaxies, we simulate high-power jets with jet powers of Q~10^46erg/s in a stratified galaxy cluster halo using a state-of-art relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) code we have recently developed. With the simulated jet-induced flow profiles, we then perform Monte-Carlo simulations, where the transport of high-energy particles is followed assuming large-angle scatterings in the flow-rest frame. We estimate the energy gains and acceleration times in the acceleration processes by shocks, shear, and turbulence. We present the results and discuss implications on the acceleration of UHECRs in FR II radio jets.
In the center of an Active Galactic Nuclei(AGN) is a supermassive black hole which accretes matter from its surroundings. The radio-loud AGN launch two relativistic jets perpendicular to the accretion disk which terminates into radio lobes located up to megaparsec away. Blazars form a small subset of radio-loud AGNs with one of two relativistic jets pointing toward the observer's line of sight. Many blazars often show flares at different frequencies. And these flares at different frequencies are known that they often correlate with each other. In 2013 December, there was a gamma-ray flare in 3C 279, one of the brightest blazars, Dec 2013. So we want to reveal that whether this flare correlates with radio flare or not, and where the flare originate. With polarization observation at radio frequencies, we can study the physical properties of the magnetic field in the innermost regions of the relativistic jets. Therefore, we have conducted polarization monitoring of this source from Dec. 2013 to Jun. 2014 with KVN(Korea VLBI Network) radio telescopes at 22, 43 and 86GHz. Here we present the initial results of the monitoring of 3C 279. We prospect that we can reveal the origin of this gamma-ray flare by comparing with our radio data.
My contribution to these proceedings summarizes a general overview on High Resolution Shock Capturing methods (HRSC) in the field of relativistic hydrodynamics with special emphasis on Riemann solvers. HRSC techniques achieve highly accurate numerical approximations (formally second order or better) in smooth regions of the flow, and capture the motion of unresolved steep gradients without creating spurious oscillations. In the first part I will show how these techniques have been extended to relativistic hydrodynamics, making it possible to explore some challenging astrophysical scenarios. I will review recent literature concerning the main properties of different special relativistic Riemann solvers, and discuss several 1D and 2D test problems which are commonly used to evaluate the performance of numerical methods in relativistic hydrodynamics. In the second part I will illustrate the use of HRSC methods in several astrophysical applications where special and general relativistic hydrodynamical processes play a crucial role.
