A wall-frame type structural system has been widely used to make full use of a limited land in large cities to satisfy the several functional requirement in one building. However, this type of hybrid structure brought some problems due to the vertical discontinuity of a structural system. The response of a wall-frame type structural system having a deep transfer girder was observed. An arch system was introduced to replace the deep transfer girder. The adequacy of an arch system was observed for the various boundary conditions of a system. The proposed system was compared to a general transfer girder system by applying both gravity load and lateral load. It was observed that an arch system fairly distributes the stress without concentrating stress at a certain location of a system differently from the current transfer girder system. The moment decrement effect of a column can also be obtained by eliminating the large mass of a transfer girder. Also it was investigated that an arch system is more economical and effective than the current transfer girder system.
Rammed Aggregate Pier (RAP) method is intermediate foundation between deep and shallow foundation, and it has been built in world wide. RAP represents a relatively new method that has grown steadily over 19 years since Geopier of USA developed this revolutionary method in 1989. The investigation and research in domestic is not accomplished. In this paper, the examined details of different spacing of piles, bearing capacities, respectively, conclude with recommendations on how RAP can be used in future needs. This documentation further provides comparisons of the laboratory test results which were obtained from changing the spacing of piles, namely installed rammed aggregate pier. Laboratory model test was administered in a sand box. Strain control test was conducted to determine the bearing capacities of the piers; 20 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm RAP in diameter using drilling equipment to make holes were installed in sand at initial relative densities of 40%. By comparing different spacing of piles, in this experiment, piles are spaced structually span, form a ring shape, narrowing the distance of each other, to the center. the result shows that as diameter of pier is bigger in diameter, bearing capacity also dramatically increased due to raised stiffness. Also, as the space between each piers was closed, the settlement rate of soil was decreased significantly. From the test results, as the space between each piles were getting closer, it allows greater chances to have more resistance to deformation, and shows more improved stability of structures. After from the verification work which is continuous leads the accumulation of the site measuring data which is various, and bearing capacity and the settlement is a plan where the research will be advanced for optimum installed RAP.
This paper is to investigate the reinforcing effects of newly devised Tire-cell mat made of waste tires in sand. Parametric study on number of connection bolts between Tirecells, relative density of sand, embedded depth, number of reinforced layers and width of Tirecell mat was made by using plate loading tests. It is found that the number of connection bolt was enough to maintain the given pressure. The bearing capacity ratio(BCR), which is defined as the rate of ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced soil to that of unreinforced soil, is the highest at the lowest density. And the reinforcing effect can be obtained in case of embedded depth within 1.0B, where B is loading width. Also settlement reduction is the highest at the lowest density of sand. The effect of number of Tirecell reinforced layers with 0.4B to 0.5B interval is limited to 2 layers and further reinforcing effects can not be obtained beyond 3 layers. Especially, the bearing capacity increased remarkably at 1 layer of reinforcement and the degree of increase was small from 1 layer to 2 layers of reinforcement. The effect of mat width of Tirecell was not significant because of high stiffness of Tirecell although the maximum bearing capacity was shown at the 2.0B mat width and the reinforcing effects of Tirecell, in general, was prominent compared with those of commercial Geoweb.
As a rectangular wire Is inserted into edgewise brackets the wire exerts a force system three-dimensionally. The force system may include bending force in first and second orders and a torsional force in third order Analytical and experimental studies on bending force have been Introduced, but information about torsion is still lack. The purpose of this study was to estimate the torsional moment in the force system of rectangular arch wires through theoretical and experimental studies. Wires most frequently used for third order control were selected as study materials. Cross sections of 0.016x0.022, 0.017x0.025, 0.019x0.025 inch rectangular wires in foot different materials such as stainless steel(Ormco), TMA(Ormco), NiTi(Ormco), and braided stainless steel (DentaFlex, Dentaurum) were used. The torque/twist rate of each test material was calculated using the torsion formula. Torque/twist rate, yield torsional moment, and ultimate torsional moment were measured with a torque gauge. The torsion formula assesses that the torque/twist rate (T/$\theta$) is proportional to the characteristics of material (G) and cross section (J), and is inversely proportional to the length of wire (L). Most experimental results corresponded with the formula. The relative stiffness was calculated for reference to a logical sequence of wire changes.
We present a trade-off technique for fast but qualitative planar shape deformation using a layered mesh. We construct a layered mesh that is embedding a planar input shape; the upper-layer is denoted as a control mesh and the other lower-layer as a shape mesh that is defined by mean value coordinates relative to the control mesh. First, we try to preserve some shape properties including user constraints for the control mesh by means of a known existing nonlinear least square optimization technique, which produces deformed positions of the control mesh vertices. Then, we compute the deformed positions of the shape mesh vertices indirectly from the deformed control mesh by means of simple coordinates computation. The control mesh consists of a small number of vertices while the shape layer contains relatively a large number of vertices in order to embed the input shape as tightly as possible. Since the time-consuming optimization technique is applied only to the control mesh, the overall execution is extremely fast; however, the quality of deformation is sacrificed due to the sacrificed quality of the control mesh and its relativity to the shape mesh. In order to change the deformation behavior and consequently to compensate the quality sacrifice, we present a method to control the deformation stiffness by incorporating the orientation into the user constraints. According to our experiments, the proposed technique produces a planar shape deformation fast enough for real-time applications on limited embedded systems such as cell phones and tablet PCs.
Purpose: A static loading test was performed to evaluate the ultimate flexural strength of a girder in which 80MPa high-strength concrete was synthesized on the compressive flange of the I-shape steel girder. Method: This test is designed and fabricated two types of specimens with different shear-connection specifications, and evaluated their ultimate flexural behavior until reaching the extreme event limit states. In addition, the ultimate strength was evaluated by comparing the test results and the results of the strain compatibility method. Result: By confirming the displacement within 0.02mm as a result of the relative slip measurement, it was verified that the two specimens secured perfect bonding. Therefore, the difference in the shear specification does not have a great effect on the stiffness, and if the specimens are completely synthesized, there is no difference in the behavior until it reaches the extreme-event limit states. Conclusion: The girder to be tested has a working load within the elastic range and meets the usability requirements for allowable deflection. Therefore, even if a part of the casing is subjected to the tensile force at the level of cracking, the deck will first reach the compression failure due to the role of the reinforcing bar.
To improve the seismic performance of suspended ceiling structures, various vibration-damping devices have been developed. However, the devices made of metals have a limit in that they cause large deformation and seriously damages the exterior of the suspended ceiling structure from the wall. As a results, their strengthening effect of the suspended ceiling structure was minimal. Thus, this study employed a spring and vibration-proof rubber effectively controlled vibrations without increasing horizontal seismic loads on the ceiling to enhance the seismic resistance of suspended ceiling structures. The objective of the study is to examine the dynamic properties of a seismic damping-isolation unit (SDI) with various details developed. The developed SDI was composed of a spring, embossed rubbers, and prestressed bolts, which were the main factors enhancing the damping effect. The shaking table tests were performed on eight SDI specimens produced with the number of layers of embossed rubber (ns), presence or absence of a spring, prestressed force magnitude introduced in bolts (fps), and mass weight (Wm) as the main parameters. To identify the enhancement effect of the SDI, the dynamic properties of the control specimen with a conventional hanger bolt were compared to those of the SDI specimens. The SDI specimens were effective in reducing the maximum acceleration (Ac max), acceleration amplification factor (αp), relative displacement (δR), and increasing the damping ratio (ξ) when compared to the control specimen. The Ac max, αp, and δR of the SDI specimens with two rubbers, spring, and fps of 0.1fby, where fby is the yielding strength of the screw bolt were 57.8%, 58.0%, and 61.9% lower than those of the conventional hanger bolt specimens, respectively, resulting in the highest ξ (=0.127). In addition, the αp of the SDI specimens was 50.8% lower than those specified in ASCE 7 and FEMA 356. Consequently, to accurately estimate the αp of the SDI specimens, a simple model was proposed based on the functions of fps, stiffness constant of the spring (K), Wm, and ns.
This study aimed to analyze thermo-keeping and economic feasibility by utilizing silica aerogel, which has been attracting attention as a new material, complementing the disadvantages of the conventional multi-layered thermal screen, and producing and installing multi-layered thermal screen. The multi-layered thermal screen used in the experiment was produced in two combinations using a non-woven fabric containing silica aerogel and measured and compared the temperature and fuel consumption changes due to differences in practice with the multi-layered thermal screen being sold and used on the market. Experimental results show that the temperature and relative humidity changes due to the differences of the multi-layered thermal screens in the single-span greenhouse and the multi-span greenhouse were small but remained almost the same temperature and relative humidity. It is judged that this shows that the multi-layered thermal screen using silica aerogel is not inferior to the conventional multi-layered thermal screen. As a result of a comparative analysis of heating energy, the aerogel-based multi-layered thermal screen reduced fuel consumption by about 15% in the single-span greenhouse and about 20% in the multi-span greenhouse compared to the conventional multi-layered thermal screen. It is clear that heating energy is saved as a greenhouse size and duration increase. It was found that the silica aerogel-based multi-layered screen was more breathable and warmer than the conventional multi-layered thermal screen, but It was found that the multi-layered screen used in the multi-span greenhouse was heavier and stiff compared with the conventional multi-layered thermal screen, indicating less workability and operability. Therefore, improvements were applied to the multi-layered screens used in the single-span greenhouses. It was confirmed that the replacement of internal insulation materials reduced thickness and improved stiffness so that there could be sufficient possibility for farmers to use.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate coracohumeral distance (CHD) in patients with or without subcoracoid impingement with hypothesis that patients with subcoracoid impingement would have narrower CHD. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty-four patients with subacromial impingement were evaluated. The subjects with subcoracoid impingement which was affirmed clinically and confirmed by ultrasound guided subcoracoid injection (n=28) was compared with patients with subacromial impingement only (n=96). Patients with stiffness and rotator cuff tear were excluded. Absolute CHD was measured on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) axial images and on ultrasound with the humerus in neutral position and internal rotation. Also relative ratio of distance difference (RRDD) defined as the difference of CHD in neutral position and internal rotation compared with absolute CHD in neutral on ultrasound was also measured. Results: The distance measured in neutral position was similar between US imaging and MRI (p>0.05) and both measurements did not have significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05). On ultrasound, the difference in CHD in internal rotation between the two groups nearly met the level of significance (p=0.07). No significant difference of CHD difference in two humeral positions was seen between the two groups. However, RRDD value was significantly greater in subcoracoid impingement group (p<0.05). Conclusion: No significant difference of CHD was seen between the subcoracoid impingement group and the control group. RRDD value was greater in subcoracoid impingement group suggesting that individualized coracohumeral distance in internal rotation should be taken into account when assessing patients with subcoracoid impingement.
Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low tensile strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.
