  • During hot and humid weather, air-conditioners consume a large amount of electricity due to the large amount of latent heat. Simultaneous usage of a dehumidifier may reduce latent heat and reduce electricity consumption. In this study, dehumidification performance was measured for a small-sized dehumidification rotor made of inorganic fiber impregnated with metallic silicate within a constant temperature and humidity chamber. Regeneration to dehumidification depends on ratio, rotor speed, room temperature, regeneration temperature, room relative humidity and frontal velocity to the rotor. Results demonstrate an optimum area ratio (1/2), rotor speed (1.0 rpm), and regeneration temperature ($100^{\circ}C$) to achieve a dehumidification rate of 0.0581 kg/s. As the area ratio increases, the optimum rotation speed and the optimum regeneration temperature also increase. Above the optimum rotor speed, incomplete regeneration reduces dehumidification. Above the optimum regeneration temperature, increased temperature variation between regeneration and dehumidification reduces dehumidification. Dehumidification rate also increases with an increase of relative humidity, dehumidification temperature and flow velocity into the rotor.

  • Rectal Temperature;Thermoregulation;Sows;Breed; The effects of season (hot vs. warm) in a tropical humid climate, parity (primiparous vs. multiparous) and breed (Creole: CR, Large White: LW) on rectal temperature (RT) were studied for a total of 222 lactations obtained in 85 sows (43 CR and 42 LW; 56 primiparous and 166 multiparous) over a 28-d lactation, between June 2002 and April 2005. Mean daily ambient temperature was higher during the hot season than during the warm season (26.0 vs. $24.1^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity was high and similar in both seasons (89% on average). At farrowing, BW was lower (172 vs. 233 kg) and backfat thickness was higher (37 vs. 21 mm) in CR than in LW sows (p<0.01). During the hot season, the reduction of average daily feed intake (ADFI) was more pronounced in LW than in CR sows (-920 vs. -480 g/d, p<0.05). Rectal temperature was higher at 1200 than at 0700hr, which coincides with the maximum and the minimum values of daily ambient temperature. The daily RT increased ($+0.9^{\circ}C$; p<0.01) between d -3 and d 7 (d 0: farrowing day), remained constant between d 7 and d 25 and decreased (p<0.01) thereafter (i.e. $-0.6^{\circ}C$ between d 25 and d 32). The average daily RT was significantly higher during the hot than during the warm season (38.9 vs. $38.6^{\circ}C$; p<0.01). It was not affected by breed, but the difference in RT between the hot and warm seasons was more pronounced in LW than in CR sows (+0.4 vs. $+0.2^{\circ}C$; p<0.05). Parity influenced the RT response; it was greater in primiparous than in multiparous sows (38.9 vs. $38.7^{\circ}C$; p<0.01). This study suggests that thermoregulatory responses to heat stress can differ between breeds and between parities.

  • Samples of active carbon of $1150\;m^2/g$ surface area were impregnated with ammoniacal salts of copper, chromium and silver, with and without triethylenediamine. The samples of impregnated carbon were aged at $50^{\circ}C$, with and without 90% RH (relative humidity), for a little more than one year and chemically evaluated periodically. Initially copper (II) and chromium (VI) reduced very fast in the samples in humid atmosphere to the extent of 30% and 60% respectively in four months. These values were found to be unaffected by the presence of triethylenediamine (TEDA) indicating that the chemical did not retard the reduction process of chromium (VI) and copper (II). However, in the absence of humidity the reduction of the impregnants was significantly less (10-12%, w/w) in four months. It was quite evident; therefore, that the moisture was mainly responsible for the reduction of chromium (VI) and copper (II) species in impregnated carbons. The prolonged ageing of the samples with and without triethylenediamme after four months with and without humid atmosphere showed that the extent of reduction of chromium (VI) was very low, i.e. 5-10% and of copper (II) was 2-25%. Silver is not reduced due to carbon, as it remained unchanged in concentration on storage. The impregnated carbon samples (100 g) without triethylenediamine, which were aged at room temperature for 5 years in absence of humidity and unaged when evaluated against cyanogen chloride (CNCl) at a concentration of 4 mg/L and airflow rate of 30 lpm showed a high degree of protection (80- 110 minutes).

  • A numerical analysis of the heat and mass transfer and pressure drop characteristics in modular shell and tube bundle heat exchanger was carried out. Finite Concept Method based on FVM and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulent model were used for this analysis. Condensation heat transfer enhanced total heat transfer rate $4\sim8%$ higher than that of dry heat exchanger. With increasing humid air inlet velocity, temperature and relative humidity, and with decreasing heat exchanger aspect ratio and cooling water velocity, total heat and mass transfer rate could be increased. Cooling water inlet velocity had little effect on total heat transfer.

  • The adhesive performance of marine mussel extract was compared with that of the commercial medical adhesives for fastening biotissue (SIS) bandages. Joints bonded with mussel extract showed stronger strength than those bonded with other commercial adhesives. The bonding strength was much improved when the moisture in the Joint was reduced using superporous hydrogel regardless of curing time under humid condition ($37^{\circ}C$ and 91% relative humidity). Water inflow into the SIS joint seemed to degrade the performance of mussel extracts adhesive especially for the joints of short period of curing time. The strength of SIS joints coated with surgical sealant was well maintained after being exposed to water inflow.

  • Transonic two-phase flow of Saturated humid air, in which relative humidity is 100%, with various condensation processes around thin airfoils is investigated. The study uses an extended transonic small-disturbance(TSD) model of Rusak and Lee [11, 12] which includes effects of heat addition to the flow due to condensation. Two possible limit types of condensation processes are considered. In the nonequilibrium and homogeneous process, the condensate mass fraction is calculated according to classical nucleation and droplet growth rate models. In the equilibrium process, the condensate mass fraction is calculated by assuming an isentropic process. The flow and condensation equations are solved numerical1y by iterative computations. Results under same upstream conditions describe the flow structure, field of condensate, and pressure distribution on airfoil's surfaces. It is found that flow characteristics, such as position and strength of shock waves and airfoil’s pressure distribution, are different for the two condensation processes. Yet, in each case, heat addition as a result of condensation causes significant changes in flow behavior and affects the aerodynamic performance of airfoils.

  • A new concept of an Eco-friendly desalination method is introduced in this study. The main idea of the desalination method of seawater is the condensation of the vaporized seawater by solar heat energy on the surface of seashore. The wind turbine blade plays a role of heat exchanger condensing the vaporized water in the air. In this analytical study, the availability of the proposed desalination system was studied. First, an analytical condensation theory of the vaporized water in air was arranged and the parametric study was conducted to estimate the amount of freshwater produced from the system with the change of the temperature difference between the humid air and turbine blade, and the relative humidity in air, and wind speed. From the analytical calculation, 2,927(ton/year) of freshwater was produced at the vertical-type wind turbine (Diameter=4m, Height=3m) as the relative humidity is 100%, the temperature difference between the impeller blade and the humid air is $40^{\circ}C$ and the wind speed is 10m/s.

  • The mist on the inside of an automobile windshield is not only uncomfortable but also very dangerous because it obstructs the driver's vision. However, the removal process of the mist has never been studied in detail. This study performed experiments analyzing the mechanism causes the mist in a car and investigated the appropriate removal process. The experiments were performed on two rainy days, 10 April 2006 and 26 May 2006, with temperature and relative humidity sensors of testo-175-H2 and DICKSON-TK500. We found a passenger increased water vapor by 0.2 g $min^{-1}$ through respiration and thereby relative humidity (RH) from 55% to 67% in 8 minutes. Even though RH was not saturated, misting occurred because the humid air contacted the colder surface of the window. To remove the mist, it is necessary to increase the temperature or inflow drier air in the car. Therefore, we expected that the heater would be more effective than air conditioner for this matter. However, the outcome was the other way around due to the structure of the heating and cooling system in the car. When the air-conditioner was on, colder and drier air was generated and flowed through the so-called evaporator. Droplets were produced in the evaporator due to cooling procedure. When the heater was on, the warm air evaporated the droplets and increased the water content in the air resulting in an increase of relative humidity. Consequently, the air conditioner is more effective than the heater to remove the mist.

  • A new fluorescent system (acridine/RTIL hybrid gel) confined in the 3D micro-structure of a poly(lactic acid) membrane were prepared from 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids ([bmim]X (X = $SbF_6$, $NTf_2$, Cl); RTILs), poly(lactic acid) (PLA), and acridine via the sol-gel route. SEM images showed that, in the presence of [bmim]$SbF_6$ and [bmim]$NTf_2$, 3D-ly paticulated structures were created inside the PLA membranes and acridine/RTIL hybrid gels were confined in gabs of particulates. However, the use of [bmim]Cl induced the formation of a 3D-ly porous structure containing the hybrid gel of acridine/[bmimCl in the micropores. The three fluorescent systems exhibited different fluorescence behaviors (fluorescence maximum and intensity) depending on the C2-H acidity scale of the RTILs (or their anion type). Acridine gels hybridized with [bmim]$SbF_6$ and [bmim]$NTf_2$ showed blue fluorescence with relative high intensity, whereas the hybrid gel with [bmim]Cl exhibited almost no fluorescence under dry conditions. However, the acridine/[bmim]Cl hybrid system in the micro-porous PLA membrane started to emit fluorescent light under humid conditions and showed a possible response, indicating that it could be applied as a humidity sensor.

  • Adhesion between cord and rubber compound of brass plated steel cords pretreated at $80^{\circ}C$ in air and at $80^{\circ}C$ and 85% of relative humidity was studied. Surface change of brass with pretreatment was also studied. Brass was oxidized at thermal treatment and oxidation was accelerated with water at humid treatment. Adhesion of pretreated cords decreased with treatment period. The decreasing tendency of rubber coverage was severe. Decrease in adhesion properties due to brass oxidation was discussed relating to the overgrowth of zinc oxide layer.
